Lake Margrethe State Forest Campground is conveniently located at Euclid Ave, Grayling, MI 49738, USA. This makes it a highly accessible destination for many Michigan residents, particularly those in the Lower Peninsula. Grayling is a well-known hub for outdoor activities, making the drive to the campground part of the adventure. The surrounding state forest lands offer clear signage and well-maintained routes leading directly to the campground entrance, ensuring a smooth journey for campers.
The campground’s proximity to major roadways allows for relatively easy travel, even for those coming from farther south in Michigan. Once you arrive, you’ll find the campground spread out along the shores of the crystal-clear Lake Margrethe, offering beautiful views and immediate access to the water. Its location within a state forest ensures a truly immersive natural experience, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, yet close enough for a convenient weekend getaway or a longer vacation.
- Rustic Campsites: The campground offers 37 rustic campsites, designed to provide a traditional camping experience. These sites are well-spaced and screened with natural vegetation, offering more privacy than many other state forest and state park campgrounds across Michigan. Many sites are also located directly on the lake, providing stunning views and easy water access.
- First-Come, First-Served (FCFS): All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This allows for spontaneous trips and ensures that if you arrive early, you're likely to find a suitable spot, even on popular weekends. It's recommended to arrive earlier in the day, especially during peak seasons, to secure your preferred site.
- Affordable Rates: The camping fee is $20 per night, making it an affordable option for individuals and families looking to enjoy the outdoors without breaking the bank.
- Potable Water: Two hand pumps are available within the campground, providing pleasant-tasting drinking water. This is a crucial amenity for rustic campgrounds, ensuring campers have access to fresh water for their needs.

- Crystal Clear Lake Margrethe: The campground boasts direct access to Lake Margrethe, known for its remarkably clear waters. Campers frequently report being able to see fish swimming in the lake, making it ideal for observation and enjoyment.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: With its clear waters and visible fish, Lake Margrethe offers fantastic fishing. Anglers can enjoy casting a line from the shore or from a boat or kayak, with a variety of species to target.
- Ideal for Swimming: The lakeshore provides perfect conditions for swimming. While signs mention potential PFAS contamination, they also state that the water is still safe for swimming, allowing campers to cool off and enjoy the lake's refreshing waters.
- Scenic Campsites: Many sites offer direct lake access or stunning hilltop views. Some notable "stellar hilltop walk-in sites" provide unique and picturesque camping spots, perfect for those seeking a more secluded experience. One customer highlighted scoring a site right on the lake, next to a sand dune, emphasizing the diverse and appealing site options.
- Spacious and Private Sites: Unlike many other campgrounds, sites at Lake Margrethe are generally well-spaced and naturally screened by trees and vegetation. This design provides a greater sense of privacy and seclusion, enhancing the overall camping experience and allowing campers to truly feel immersed in nature.
- Variety of Water Activities: The lake accommodates a mix of boats and kayaks, making it suitable for various water-based activities. While enjoying the water, campers are reminded to be aware of other watercraft, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Even on the weekend before Memorial Day, a traditionally busy period, the campground remained peaceful, according to one review. This suggests that while it is a popular spot, it retains a tranquil ambiance, especially for those who already know about its charm.

Lake Margrethe State Forest Campground Reviews
We loved it here! We decided to stop out here before checking our actual camp destination and ended up staying for the weekend! The lake is crystal clear, with a lot of fish you can see while you enjoy your time out on the water.A mix of boats and kayaks on the water, so always keep your eyes open to those around you. It wasn't too busy when we went the weekend before memorial day, but I can see this being a spot for a lot of those who already know.Very peaceful as we scored a site right on the lake, next to a sand dune to one side. Looks as if there's 37 sites to choose from. FCFS, $20/night and pets are welcome on a leash.
May 19, 2024 · Alicia HairSeveral stellar hilltop walk-in sites are among the numerous rustic campsites here. Lakeshore is perfect for swimming, though signs warn of potential PFAS contamination while stating it is still safe to swim. Most sites are well spaced and screened from one another with trees and vegetation, far better than many other state forest and state park campgrounds across Michigan where virtually no screening or spacing between sites is offered. Two hand pumps provide pleasant tasting drinking water. On an early July weekend there were plenty of campsites open. Everything is first come first served.
Nov 11, 2023 · Greg KruegerThis was a great find after our originally planned campground didn’t meet are expectations. Lots of shade and a mix of big and small sites. We scored a site right on the water. The lake is stunning and we will definitely return in the summer when it’s warmer. I did wade out a bit during a warmer part of the day and it’s shallow, crystal clear, and refreshing. Outhouses were clean, no issues with the wells. The sites are spaced out and there are several that are walk in sites but also a bunch that are drive in. My only complaint is the army base near by. There was pretty much constant gun fire throughout are first day (Saturday) and then some on Sunday. The locals aren’t a big fan either from what I can tell. It wasn’t bad enough to not return but it’s a factor for some. All in all this is a gem and we’ll definitely return.
May 06, 2024 · Trevor SullivanThis is an absolutely beautiful park. It is on the water, small number of sites, but they are large spaced well and have tons of trees. Hands down the best view and nicest site I have ever stayed in! We loved the shallow clean water. Pretty trail along the water. It was so beautiful my husband who is not a camper, didn't even mind the outhouse!!!!!!The ONLY negative is the sound of gun from the shooting ranges ( only mentioned in case someone in your party has PTSD) and lack of trashcans near the outhouse
Jul 27, 2022 · TheBudgetFamilySykesAgainBeautiful state forest campground on lake Margrethe. Sites are shaded and very spacious! Cold drinking water from an old fashioned pump, yeah pick up and clean vault toilets!
