Decent place, but not for long trailers! It's a tight squeeze for our 32' horse trailer with living quarters, some of the spots are not long enough for a trailer this size, and because of the single lane with trees/boulders/log fences on either side you have little wiggle room when backing. Spots have picnic tables and fire rings. The toilets were clean. The well is under construction so all the water is off for now. A short walk to the creek is nice. Some road and train noise, didn't bother us but just know you can hear it - Trisha Knobloch

It serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse landscapes of Montana, from towering peaks to pristine waterways. The campground caters to a variety of campers, from those with smaller vehicles to more experienced trailer users, offering a genuine taste of Montana's vast wilderness. With its commitment to cleanliness and a friendly, welcoming environment, Devil Creek Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's a launching pad for unforgettable Montana adventures.

Strategically located at 15485 US-2, Essex, MT 59916, USA, Devil Creek Campground boasts an enviable position that makes it highly accessible for Montana residents and those traveling through the state. Its address on US-2 places it directly on a major thoroughfare, ensuring easy navigation and minimal hassle for arrivals. This prime location means you're never too far from essential services while still being deeply immersed in nature.

One of the significant advantages of Devil Creek Campground's location is its proximity to Glacier National Park. Situated roughly halfway between the east and west entrances of the park along State Route 2, it provides a convenient stopover or a prolonged stay for those looking to explore both sides of this magnificent national treasure. While specific distances can vary depending on road conditions and park access points, the campground's placement ensures that a scenic drive to the park's iconic trails and viewpoints is always within reach. For instance, according to previous visitors, it’s approximately 34 miles to the west gate, offering a manageable drive for a day trip into the park.

Despite its somewhat rugged setting, the campground is remarkably easy to get to and navigate once inside. The well-maintained roads leading to and within the campground ensure a smooth arrival, even for those with trailers. Its clear signage and straightforward layout contribute to a stress-free entry, allowing campers to quickly settle in and begin their Montana outdoor experience.

Devil Creek Campground is equipped with a selection of services designed to enhance your camping experience, focusing on essential comforts while maintaining a rustic feel.

  • Picnic Tables: Each designated campsite is furnished with a sturdy picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, or simply enjoying a board game with your camping companions.
  • Fire Rings: Campers can enjoy the quintessential camping experience with individual fire rings at each site. These are perfect for cozy campfires, cooking over an open flame, or simply gathering around to share stories under the Montana stars. Users are reminded to always check for current fire restrictions.
  • Clean Toilets: The campground provides well-maintained toilet facilities. Visitors consistently praise the cleanliness and upkeep of these amenities, highlighting their pleasant condition and lack of unpleasant odors. It's recommended to bring a flashlight for nighttime use, as there are no artificial lights within the campground area, ensuring a truly dark sky experience.
  • Water Access (Variable): While a well is typically available for water access, it's important to note that services can be subject to maintenance. As per recent visitor information, the well may be under construction, resulting in temporary water shut-offs. Campers should plan accordingly and consider bringing their own water supply, especially during periods of maintenance.
  • On-Site Custodians: The campground benefits from the presence of dedicated custodians who actively maintain the grounds. Their commitment to keeping the area tidy and well-kept significantly contributes to the pleasant experience for all campers.

Devil Creek Campground offers several features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for your next Montana camping adventure.

  • Proximity to Glacier National Park: Its location is undeniably a major draw. Being situated between the east and west entrances of Glacier National Park makes it an ideal base for exploring one of America's most magnificent natural wonders without extensive travel time.
  • Well-Maintained Grounds: Visitors frequently commend the campground for its overall tidiness and cleanliness. The custodians' diligent efforts ensure that the facilities and surrounding areas are well-kept, providing a pleasant environment for all campers.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere (with some ambient sounds): While offering a generally serene environment, the campground is close to US-2 and a train line. This means some road and train noise can be heard. However, for many, this does not detract from the overall peacefulness of the setting. It’s important for campers to be aware of this ambient sound for planning their stay.
  • Accessibility for Various Vehicles (with considerations): The campground is generally easy to access and navigate. However, it's particularly important for those with longer trailers (e.g., 32' horse trailers with living quarters) to be aware that some spots might be a tight squeeze. The single lane layout with natural obstructions like trees, boulders, and log fences can limit maneuverability when backing large vehicles. Smaller trailers and tents will find it very accommodating.
  • Natural Surroundings and Creek Access: A short, pleasant walk leads to a nearby creek, offering a refreshing natural element and a place to relax by the water. The surrounding natural beauty, including abundant trees and flora, contributes to an immersive outdoor experience.
  • Dark Sky Environment: With no artificial lights anywhere at night, the campground offers a truly dark sky experience. This is a significant highlight for stargazers, providing unparalleled views of the Milky Way and constellations without light pollution. Remember to bring a flashlight for nighttime navigation.
