Wrights Lake Campground

Kyburz, CA 95720, USA

4.0
The camp is quaint and perty quite. The lake has alligators which could possibly effect the fishing negative. Small swimming area. Just be mindful of the gators. Jay and his son were the perfect personable and helpful hosts ever. There dog Brutus was a delightful character, the hunting season was a bit noisy and hectic. But the big foot camper society were awesome. Shower stayed hot but leaked alot and head was rigged but over all great quite repose for awhile when your traveling and between spots. And 20$ a night 10$ with parks pass. Thanks guys. - Christian Hastie

Wrights Lake Campground Introduce

For Californians seeking a truly serene and picturesque escape into the high Sierra Nevada, Wrights Lake Campground in Kyburz offers a uniquely tranquil experience. Nestled within the expansive Eldorado National Forest, this quaint and often quiet campground is a cherished spot for those who prefer the sounds of nature over bustling crowds. It's a place where majestic rocky peaks meet a serene lake, inviting visitors to unwind, explore, and connect with the pristine wilderness. While it maintains a rustic charm, offering essential amenities, Wrights Lake Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's a "happy place" for many, promising awe-inspiring scenery and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Wrights Lake Campground is located in Kyburz, CA 95720, deep within the scenic Eldorado National Forest. This puts it at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, surrounded by a mixed conifer forest primarily consisting of large lodgepole and fir trees that provide ample shade to the campsites. The campground is situated close to the shore of Wrights Lake, a shallow, 40-acre body of water renowned for its serene and quiet atmosphere. The stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevadas and the proximity to the rugged Desolation Wilderness further enhance its appeal as a prime outdoor destination.

Accessing Wrights Lake Campground requires navigating forest roads, which contributes to its secluded feel. While some reviewers state the "road in is not in good shape," they also confirm it is "passable by a normal car." This suggests caution and a slower pace are advisable, but a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is generally not a strict requirement, unless conditions are particularly challenging (e.g., heavy snow or recent severe weather).

The drive to Wrights Lake from Highway 50, approximately 5 miles east of Kyburz, involves turning left (north) onto Wrights Lake Road and continuing for about 8 miles to the campground. Alternatively, from Highway 50 about ten miles east of Pollock Pines, turn left on Ice House Road, then right on the Ice House/Wright's Lake Tie Road for about eight miles, followed by a left onto Wright's Lake Road for two miles to the campground. These routes, though potentially winding, lead to a rewarding destination that feels genuinely "off the beaten path," enhancing the sense of escape. There are two primary parking areas that provide access to the Twin Lakes and Rockbound trailheads, offering convenient starting points for hiking into Desolation Wilderness.

Wrights Lake Campground provides a range of amenities designed for a comfortable, yet authentic, camping experience:

  • Campsites with Amenities: The campground offers 79 sites suitable for both tents and RVs/trailers. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, perfect for cooking and gathering. Some sites are uniquely nestled among giant boulders, offering additional privacy.

  • Clean Restrooms: The campground features vault toilets that are noted by visitors to be "pretty good" and well-maintained by hosts, offering a clean and functional option for campers.

  • Showers: A significant highlight for many campers is the availability of showers. While one review mentions a shower that "stayed hot but leaked a lot and head was rigged," the availability of hot showers is a definite bonus in a rustic setting, offering a chance to refresh after outdoor activities.

  • Potable Water: Drinking water is available through piped water sources at the campground, a crucial amenity for multi-day stays.

  • Trash Management: While the expectation is generally "pack it in you pack it out" for larger items, the presence of hosts and managed sites implies designated areas for trash disposal, ensuring the campground remains clean.

  • Firewood: Firewood can be gathered in the area, offering a sustainable option for campfires (always check for current fire restrictions first).

  • ADA Accessible Facilities: The campground and lake facilities are noted as ADA accessible, making it inclusive for visitors with disabilities, though some nearby hikes may not be suitable for wheelchairs.

Wrights Lake Campground is celebrated for several unique features and highlights:

  • Serene Lake for Non-Motorized Activities: Wrights Lake is a "beautiful little lake" where "motorboats are prohibited." This makes it ideal for peaceful activities like kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and swimming. The lake is described as a "glassy beauty" and "warms up nicely" for swimming.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Keep an "eye out for the eagle who likes to hang out on the east end of the lake." The area is also known for birding. Be aware that the presence of deer, squirrels, raccoons, and bears means campers need to practice responsible food storage to avoid attracting critters.

  • Extensive Hiking Opportunities: The campground serves as a fantastic "jumping off point for hikes into the Desolation Wilderness," with "plenty of hiking for all skill levels." Trails like Bloodsucker, Rockbound, and Twin Lakes lead to stunning alpine lakes and offer dramatic scenery. Day-use permits for Desolation Wilderness are available at trailheads, and overnight permits require advance reservation or pickup at the Pacific Ranger Station.

  • Beautiful Scenery and Environment: Visitors consistently praise the "awe inspiring" scenery, the "clean air," the "smell of the trees," and the "beautiful views." The campground is situated in a "heavy timber belt" with a "grassy understory," and wildflowers bloom throughout the spring and summer.

  • Friendly and Helpful Hosts: Despite some managerial concerns with Royal Elk Management noted by one reviewer, other reviews highlight "Jay and his son were the perfect personable and helpful hosts ever," and "hosts are great." The presence of a delightful dog named Brutus also adds to the welcoming atmosphere.

  • Quaint and Quiet Ambiance: The campground is described as "quaint and pretty quiet," providing a peaceful "repose for awhile when you're traveling and between spots."

  • Unique "Alligator" Warning (Please Note): One customer review humorously mentions "alligators in the lake." It's important to clarify that alligators are NOT native to California's wild lakes. This comment is highly likely to be a local inside joke, a misunderstanding, or perhaps a playful exaggeration. California lakes do not naturally harbor alligators. Always rely on official information regarding wildlife. However, it does add to the colorful character of the reviews!
