While it maintains a rustic charm, its fundamental appeal lies in its ability to offer a genuine sense of solitude and immersion in Idaho's breathtaking wilderness.
Designed for campers who appreciate simplicity and the raw beauty of the outdoors, Upper O'Brien Campground is a hidden gem for local adventurers. It provides a straightforward yet deeply rewarding camping experience, perfect for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and embrace the tranquility of a riverside setting.
Upper O'Brien Campground is conveniently situated at Robinson Bar Rd, Stanley, ID 83278, USA. Its location is a significant part of its appeal, offering a secluded feel while remaining accessible for Idaho residents. The most distinctive feature of its accessibility is the approach: visitors must cross a "one lane bridge" to reach the campground. While this might sound daunting, customer reviews confirm that this "didn't seem to be a problem for even longer pull behinds," indicating that it's manageable for various vehicle types, including those with 18-foot trailers.
Being right on the Salmon River is arguably the campground's most valuable locational asset. This direct riverfront access provides campers with immediate opportunities for fishing, enjoying the river's sights and sounds, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The drive itself to the campground allows visitors to immerse themselves in the scenic Idaho landscape, building anticipation for the peaceful retreat that awaits.
While Upper O'Brien Campground provides a more rustic camping experience, it offers essential services to ensure a functional and enjoyable stay. Based on available public information and customer reviews, here are the key services you can expect:
- Fairly Level Campsites: Campers can anticipate sites that are "fairly level," making it easier to set up tents or park RVs and trailers without significant effort. This is a practical convenience that enhances the comfort of your stay.
- Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with "fire rings," allowing visitors to safely build campfires. This essential amenity is perfect for cooking, warmth, and enjoying classic camping traditions under the Idaho sky.
- Picnic Tables: Sites also include "tables," providing a dedicated space for outdoor dining, meal preparation, or simply gathering with fellow campers.
- Hand Pump for Drinking Water: Access to "cool drinking water" is available via a hand pump. While it might not be modern plumbing, this ensures a supply of potable water for campers, which is crucial for any outdoor adventure.
- Pit Toilet: The campground provides "only one pit toilet." It's important to note from reviews that its condition is described as "original to the campground...the floors are crumbling, holes in the walls and in general poor repair." While functional, campers should manage expectations regarding this facility.
- Cost-Effective Stay: The cost for a night's stay is noted as "$20 a night," making it a relatively affordable option for a scenic riverside location.
Upper O'Brien Campground boasts several distinct features and highlights that contribute to its appeal, particularly for those seeking a quiet and authentic Idaho outdoor experience:
- Direct Salmon River Access: The most prominent feature is its prime location "right on the Salmon River." This provides unparalleled access to one of Idaho's most iconic waterways, perfect for fishing, river gazing, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of flowing water.
- Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: Reviews consistently highlight the campground's "quiet" and "very pleasant" ambiance. Unlike more crowded sites, Upper O'Brien offers a genuine sense of "solitude," making it ideal for those truly looking to disconnect and relax in nature. It "seems like a campground which is rarely full," enhancing the feeling of privacy.
- Managable Access Bridge: The "one lane bridge" leading into the campground, while a unique entrance, is confirmed to be navigable "even for longer pull behinds" and 18-foot trailers. This means a wider range of vehicles can access this peaceful spot.
- Rustic Charm: For campers who appreciate a more traditional and less commercialized experience, Upper O'Brien's rustic nature, including its basic amenities, adds to its charm. It offers an experience closer to raw nature.
- Good for Various Vehicles: Reviews indicate it's suitable for trucks with trailers, and while "inadvisable to try to bring an RV into the Lower O'Brian campground," Upper O'Brien appears more accommodating for different vehicle types.
- Affordable Camping: At $20 a night, it represents a budget-friendly option for riverside camping in a desirable Idaho location.
- Potential for Improvement: While current conditions have some drawbacks (like the pit toilet and lack of a host), the potential for this campground is recognized, with suggestions that upgrades could make it "one of the best campgrounds in the area." This inherent potential speaks to the strength of its natural setting.

Upper O'Brien Campground Reviews
Great place right on the Salmon River to spend the night or a couple of days. There is a one lane bridge you have to cross to get to the campground but this didn't seem to be a problem for even longer pull behinds. The sites are fairly level, fire rings and table. There is a hand pump for cool drinking water. There is only one pit toilet which looks to be original to the campground...the floors are crumbling, holes in the walls and in general poor repair. There is no host on site and the overall condition of the campground was evident of that. The cost is $20 a night. If they up graded the toilets and got a full time host for the Upper and Lower O Brien campgrounds this could be one of the best campgrounds in the area.
Jul 18, 2023 · Flying DutchmanQuiet campground to stay in. Very pleasant, right next to the Salmon River. The entrance to this campground probably seems a little difficult, I did it with my truck and a 18 foot trailer and I had no problem at all. I think it is inadvisable to try to bring an RV into the Lower O'Brian campground, although you could walk from Upper to Lower and see for yourself. Regardless, Upper is really nice and peaceful and at night you really do get that feeling of solitude because this seems like a campground which is rarely full.
Sep 04, 2018 · Ernest KyedNice campground, the roads Are all dirt and gravel. Nice quiet campground for the weekend getaway or a 2 week stay. Water is drawn from a long handle pump like the old days.
Mar 29, 2018 · Buddy GriffithVault toilet is open in the winter and there’s TP!
Jan 31, 2022 · Shem IshlerA great, little campground off the road. Great access to the river, bathrooms, water pump and dump. A little traffic noise but mostly you hear the river.
