This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of what makes South Mineral Campground a premier choice for residents seeking an authentic and breathtaking outdoor adventure.
The San Juan Mountains are a crown jewel of Colorado, known for their rugged beauty, alpine lakes, and abundant recreational opportunities. South Mineral Campground, though listed with a Durango address, is actually closer to the charming mountain town of Silverton, placing you deep within this spectacular wilderness. It offers a "beautiful campground" experience, where "the views in the morning and the sky at night were spectacular," as noted by delighted visitors. It’s a place where the sound of the South Mineral Creek and the majestic presence of the surrounding peaks create a profound sense of peace and natural wonder.
We understand that Colorado residents value campgrounds that offer both stunning natural beauty and a genuine sense of escape. This guide will delve into the specifics of South Mineral Campground, detailing its remote yet accessible location, the essential services it provides for a comfortable stay, and the standout features that make it a favorite among hikers, photographers, and anyone seeking profound quiet. We'll also provide critical contact information to help you plan your visit to this high-altitude Colorado gem.
South Mineral Campground is located within the magnificent San Juan National Forest, approximately 4 miles west of U.S. Highway 550 via Forest Road 585 (South Mineral Road). While its postal address is Durango, CO 81301, USA, it is much closer to Silverton, Colorado, situated about 3 miles west of Silverton on US-550. This places it at an impressive elevation of around 9,800 feet, offering cool summer temperatures and stunning alpine scenery.
Access to the campground is via Forest Road 585, which is a gravel road. Most sources indicate that this road is "drivable by 2WD" vehicles in dry conditions, meaning it's generally accessible for a wide range of cars and RVs. However, it’s always wise to check current road conditions, especially during or after rain, as "washboard" sections can occur, and higher clearance might be beneficial. Beyond the campground, Forest Road 585 transitions into a 4WD-only road, leading to further remote areas and trails. Its proximity to the famed "Million Dollar Highway" (US-550) makes it a convenient stop for those exploring the scenic byway while offering a genuine sense of seclusion once you arrive at the campground.
South Mineral Campground provides fundamental amenities typical of a US Forest Service campground, focusing on maintaining a natural environment while offering necessary comforts:
- Campsites: The campground features 26 individual campsites. These sites are generally "spacious, well-maintained," and "well-spaced," providing a good degree of privacy. Most sites are shaded by spruce and fir trees, while some offer sunny spots or are located directly along the creek. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate. Some sites are also designated as handicapped accessible.
- Vault Toilets: Clean vault toilets (pit toilets) are available throughout the campground, with reviews consistently praising their cleanliness.
- Potable Water: Drinking water is available via hand pumps or spigots, ensuring campers have access to fresh water (note: water services may be turned off seasonally, typically between September and May).
- Trash Disposal: Bear-resistant trash bins are provided for waste disposal. Due to the active wildlife, strict adherence to bear-safe food storage practices is highly recommended.
- No Electrical Hookups: South Mineral Campground does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups for RVs. It is ideal for tent camping or self-contained RVs and trailers. Maximum RV length is often advised at 30 feet due to tight turns.
- First-Come, First-Served: All campsites at South Mineral Campground are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are not accepted. Campers recommend arriving early in the morning or on weekdays, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
- Camp Hosts: The campground benefits from "friendly campground host(s)" who are present on-site, providing assistance, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring a pleasant experience for visitors.
- Dispersed Camping Options Nearby: For those unable to secure a spot in the main campground or preferring a more primitive experience, designated dispersed camping areas are available along Forest Road 585.
South Mineral Campground's appeal lies in its stunning natural setting and its gateway status to incredible outdoor adventures:
- Spectacular Mountain Views: Visitors consistently rave about the "spectacular" views of the surrounding San Juan peaks, with "cliffs of brilliant color-contrasting reds and grays." The "views all around are tremendous," creating a truly immersive alpine experience.
- Proximity to Ice Lake Trail: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The highly popular and strenuous Ice Lake Trailhead is located directly across the road from the campground, offering immediate access to one of Colorado's most iconic and breathtaking alpine hikes, leading to vibrant turquoise lakes and wildflower meadows.
- Riverside Ambiance: The campground is situated along South Mineral Creek, providing the soothing sounds of "rushing creek" water. Many sites are close to the creek, perfect for relaxation, photography, or simply enjoying the natural symphony.
- Beautiful Waterfall: A "waterfall on the creek just upstream from the campground" adds to the scenic attraction of the area, providing an easily accessible natural wonder.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its popularity and proximity to a major trailhead, the campground is often described as "very quiet" and peaceful, offering a serene escape.
- Abundant Wildlife: The high mountain environment supports diverse wildlife, offering opportunities for observing deer, elk, various bird species, and potentially bears (hence the bear-safe food storage recommendations).
- Dark Skies for Stargazing: At nearly 10,000 feet and away from significant light pollution, the "sky at night" is truly spectacular, providing incredible opportunities for stargazing and astrophotography.
- Access to 4WD Roads: While the road to the campground is 2WD friendly, numerous other 4WD roads in the Silverton area are accessible for off-road enthusiasts looking to explore the high country.
For more information about South Mineral Campground, or to inquire about current conditions, it's best to contact the managing entity, the US Forest Service, particularly the local ranger district for the San Juan National Forest:
Address: Durango, CO 81301, USA (General area, but actual location is near Silverton)
San Juan National Forest (General Information):
Phone: (970) 247-4874
Mobile Phone: +1 970-247-4874 (This will likely route to the same general Forest Service number).
It is strongly advised to call ahead to the San Juan National Forest office (possibly the Columbine Ranger District, which covers the Silverton area) for the most up-to-date information on road conditions (especially in early summer or late fall), fire restrictions, any temporary closures, and the operational status of water services. Remember, this is a first-come, first-served campground, so direct site availability cannot be guaranteed via phone.
For Colorado locals, South Mineral Campground offers an exceptionally suitable and highly coveted opportunity to immerse themselves in the pristine wilderness of the San Juan Mountains. Its appeal for residents stems from its unique combination of raw natural beauty, strategic location for high-alpine adventures, and a commitment to maintaining a quiet, authentic camping experience.
Locals who seek genuine solitude and breathtaking scenery will find South Mineral Campground to be a true gem. The "beautiful campground" set amidst towering peaks, with "spectacular" morning views and night skies, provides the quintessential Colorado mountain escape. The soothing presence of South Mineral Creek and its nearby waterfall further enhance the serene atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reconnect with nature. Moreover, the direct access to the world-renowned Ice Lake Trailhead is an undeniable highlight, positioning it as an ideal basecamp for avid hikers and explorers looking to conquer one of the state's most rewarding treks.
While the first-come, first-served policy and the lack of electrical hookups might require a bit more planning, these aspects also contribute to the campground's less commercialized, more authentic feel, which many Colorado outdoor enthusiasts prefer. The presence of friendly camp hosts, well-maintained facilities (especially the clean vault toilets), and the availability of dispersed camping nearby provide flexibility and comfort. For any Colorado resident yearning for a beautiful, quiet, high-altitude camping adventure that epitomizes the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, South Mineral Campground is an absolutely indispensable destination.

South Mineral Campground Reviews
Beautiful campground and very quiet. Difficult to pay via credit card but the host was very accommodating.
Jun 04, 2025 · C BBeautiful, spacious, well-maintained. Great camping spots, although not many dispersed options, and a friendly campground host. The views in the morning and the sky at night were spectacular.
Sep 12, 2023 · Aspen Maria LanouetteAn absolute treasure, the waterfalls tucked away here make you feel like you have discovered another world that is untouched. There is very little foot traffic and very simple trails to these amazing locations.UPDATE - I have since revisited after it reopened in September of 2021 (from the Ice Lake fire in 2020) and this area is nearly the same, with the exception of the falls to the north of the road now completely destroyed.
Sep 28, 2021 · Nicholas KleinMy husband and I really loved camping here! Ouray was full, so we drove a bit further and found this camp. The camp hosts are friendly and the vault toilets are super clean. We stayed in site 1 and it was spacious surrounded by lodgepole pine. Many sites are near the creek. South Mineral is on the $$ as far as camping goes - $34 7/22.
Aug 01, 2022 · CynthiaFirst come, first served. $34/night cash or check. Check out at noon. Really well kept sights. Not crowded at all. Fire pit with grill and picnic table at each sight. Vault toilet. Potable water. A really nice creek running right by camp. Only giving 4 stars bc it’s a little pricey.
