Sims Mesa Campground offers a surprising array of modern amenities that significantly enhance the camping experience, particularly for families.
Flushing Toilets: A significant upgrade from what might be expected in some campgrounds, Sims Mesa provides "regular flushing toilets" in the campgrounds themselves. This is a major convenience for campers, offering a higher level of comfort and hygiene than vault toilets, which are only found in the day-use areas.
Showers: The presence of "showers" within the campground facilities is another highly valued amenity. This allows campers to refresh and clean up comfortably after a day of outdoor activities, making longer stays much more pleasant.
Clean Facilities: Reviewers consistently praise the cleanliness, stating, "The facilities are clean" and "The campsites are clean." This commitment to cleanliness is crucial for a positive camping experience and reflects well on the management.
Reservable Sites: While it "used to be first come first serve," Sims Mesa now operates on a reservation system. This service is particularly beneficial for holiday weekends, allowing campers to "reserve your spot in January" for popular times. This guarantees a spot and reduces uncertainty, which is a major convenience for planning family trips.
Access to Main Marina Services: Although a 30-minute drive, campers have access to the main Marina for "ice or any other basic things." The marina also offers "some activities," such as "bumper boats, and kayak rentals," providing additional recreational opportunities and necessities.
Sims Mesa Campground is distinguished by several key features and highlights that make it a standout choice for campers, particularly families, in New Mexico.
Family Favorite for Annual Trips: The campground is clearly a cherished destination, as evidenced by the review: "This is our favorite spot for our Family yearly camping trip. Have been going here for years." This speaks volumes about its sustained appeal and ability to create lasting memories.
Unexpectedly Modern Restrooms: While online information might suggest vault toilets, a key highlight is the presence of "regular flushing toilets" and "showers" within the actual campgrounds. This superior level of amenity provides a more comfortable and hygienic experience than many other campgrounds.
Proactive Reservation System: The transition from first-come, first-serve to a reservation system, especially the advice to "reserve your spot in January" for holidays, highlights a proactive approach to managing demand and ensuring visitors can secure their preferred dates. This organized system is a significant benefit.
Highly Recommended by Locals: The emphatic "Highly recommend this area!" from a loyal visitor underscores the campground's strong reputation and positive word-of-mouth within the local community.
Cleanliness Standards: The consistent feedback about "The facilities are clean" and "The campsites are clean" indicates a high standard of maintenance, which contributes significantly to a pleasant camping environment.
Proximity to Navajo Lake Activities: While a 30-minute drive to the main marina, the access to activities like "bumper boats, and kayak rentals" expands recreational opportunities beyond just camping, catering to a wider range of family interests.
Consideration for "Goat Heads": A practical highlight, despite being a minor inconvenience, is the explicit mention of "a ton of goat heads everywhere." This warning, accompanied by advice to "pack good shoes and you may want to bring a broom or rake," demonstrates an honest assessment and helps campers prepare, reflecting a candid and helpful community sharing insights.

Jun 15, 2025 · Crystal StewartWe had a nice time at this campground with the family. I wanted to leave a review because it was hard to find information about this campground online. While it says online there are vault toilets, that's only in the day use areas. In the campgrounds they have regular flushing toilets and there are also showers. The facilities are clean. The campsites are clean, however, the only problem I ran into was there are a ton of goat heads everywhere. So pack good shoes and you may want to bring a broom or rake to clear up the area you will be staying in. If you don't have a boat it's about a 30-minute drive to the main Marina, if you need ice or any other basic things, and they do have some activities at the main Marina, like bumper boats, and kayak rentals.
Jun 21, 2024 · Heather HarrisonThe place is great. The Marina on this side of the lake was disappointing. They didn't have ice. You cannot rent water craft there. You can only have one boat in the ramp at a time. It seems that they could move the ramps to allow for 2 boats to get in and out of the water at a time. Fishing was ok. My friend caught 3 fish, returned 2 and we cooked one.
Jun 10, 2021 · Guillermo LoubrielHad a great time at this beautiful, quiet campground on the east side of Navajo Lake. Clean site, restrooms, and dump station with drinking water access. Even though it showed 100% booked online, the campground was mostly empty when we stayed the last weekend in April. Dog friendly with leash rules; 10 feet max leash, I think. Was told there are showers at the campground, but we did not see/use them.Great lake views from the southeastern M loop sites . Easy lake access a short walk away with fishing spots. Access to boat ramp Sims marina. Saw some bass cruising the edges of the lake near the day use area.Road to the campground is a bit bumpy, but nothing terrible. Just watch for potholes or deteriorating edges. The park office was closed when we visited.
May 23, 2024 · Daniel Sperry7/28/19. This campground is a quiet place to relax and enjoy the lake. It is a much smaller campsite as compared to the sites across the lake which is very crowded due to the large number of sites. My Foster kids enjoyed their first time at the lake and the water typical was around 74 degrees. Bathrooms are clean with two showers. One regular and the other handicap. The marina store is very small so bring what you need.
