Let's explore why Sawmill Hiker Campground might just be your next favorite camping destination.
Sawmill Hiker Campground offers a unique semi-primitive, tent-only, walk-in camping experience within the vast and beautiful White Ranch Open Space Park. Unlike traditional drive-up campgrounds, Sawmill requires a scenic hike to reach your campsite, immediately immersing you in the natural splendor of the Colorado Front Range. It's designed for those who appreciate a more rugged and secluded camping environment, yet it remains remarkably accessible from the Denver metropolitan area. With only ten designated campsites, it promises a tranquil and less crowded atmosphere, allowing campers to truly connect with nature. This campground is celebrated for its stunning panoramic views, including an incredible vista of the Denver skyline and the plains stretching out beyond. It's an ideal spot for weekend warriors, families with older children, or anyone looking to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of Colorado's outdoors. While you won't find luxuries like campfires or hammocks allowed, the raw beauty, convenience, and distinct experience make Sawmill Hiker Campground a cherished local secret.
Sawmill Hiker Campground is strategically located within White Ranch Open Space Park, with its access point at the lower parking lot of the park in Golden, CO 80403, USA. This makes it incredibly convenient for residents of Denver, Boulder, and the surrounding Front Range communities. To reach the campground, campers must embark on a hike of approximately 1.3 miles from the parking lot. This walk-in nature contributes to the campground's serene and secluded feel, as it filters out casual visitors and ensures that those who arrive are truly there to enjoy the natural environment. White Ranch Open Space Park itself is easily accessible via major roads from Golden, ensuring a straightforward drive to the trailhead. While the hike to the campsites is manageable, even for families, it's enough to transport you away from the urban bustle and into the quiet embrace of the foothills. This perfect balance of proximity to the city and a genuine "getaway" feel makes Sawmill Hiker Campground a prime choice for locals seeking adventure without a long journey.
Sawmill Hiker Campground provides essential amenities designed to support a semi-primitive camping experience while ensuring comfort and convenience for its guests. Given its hike-in nature, the services are thoughtfully provided to meet the needs of backcountry-style campers:
- Designated Tent-Only Campsites: There are ten individual campsites available, each specifically designed for tent camping. These sites are spread out, offering a sense of privacy and seclusion.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, or simply relaxing.
- Porta-Loo Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are available in the form of porta-loos, ensuring a more comfortable experience than primitive backcountry spots.
- Bear Boxes for Food Storage: Given the wildlife in the area, bear-resistant food storage containers (bear boxes) are provided at each site. This is a crucial safety measure, requiring campers to secure all food and scented items.
- Trash Receptacles: Unlike many primitive sites where you must pack out all trash, Sawmill Hiker Campground provides trash receptacles, making waste disposal more convenient for campers.
- Online Permit System: Camping at Sawmill requires a permit, which must be obtained online at least 24 hours in advance. This system helps manage capacity and ensures a regulated and enjoyable experience for all.
- Managed by Jefferson County Open Space: The campground is part of the Jeffco Open Space system, which means it is well-maintained and operates under clear guidelines to protect the natural environment.
Sawmill Hiker Campground boasts several standout features that make it a highly desirable destination for local Colorado outdoor enthusiasts:
- Stunning Panoramic Views: A major highlight is the incredible view of the Denver metropolitan area and the expansive plains stretching eastward. This unique perspective, especially at night when the city lights twinkle, is truly unforgettable.
- Accessible Hike-In Experience: The 1.3-mile hike from the parking lot provides a perfect balance—it's short enough to be manageable for many, including families, yet long enough to create a sense of being "away from it all."
- Secluded and Peaceful Atmosphere: With only ten campsites, the campground offers a quiet retreat, allowing campers to enjoy the sounds of nature without the crowds often found at larger, drive-up campgrounds.
- Beautiful Trails Nearby: The Sawmill Trail itself is a lovely 3.3-mile loop accessible from the campground, featuring small streams, interesting rock outcroppings, and even blooming cactus in season. White Ranch Open Space offers over 20 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking.
- Wildflower Displays: During the appropriate season, the area around the campground is particularly beautiful with abundant wildflowers, adding to the scenic charm.
- Observatory for Weather and Stars: Reviewers note the excellent opportunity to watch thunderstorms roll across Denver or simply enjoy incredible stargazing due to the clear views.
- Bear-Proof Storage: The provision of bear boxes is a significant safety feature, allowing campers to securely store food and deter wildlife.
- "Weekender" Friendly: Its proximity to the metro area makes it an ideal spot for a quick overnight or weekend escape, minimizing travel time and maximizing outdoor enjoyment.

Sawmill Hiker Campground Reviews
Beautiful area and views. easy hike in with trash recepticles, and bathrooms. Geared to the weekender who just wants to get away close to the metro. Even saw many family with infants. No campfires or hammocks is a bummer but understandable. The sawmill trail is a good 3.3mile loop with little streams interesting rock outcroppings and blooming cactus.
May 22, 2023 · Lance McGinnThere are only ten campsites here to the south side of the parky lot. It is about 1.3 miles from the parking lot to the camp ground. It is incredibly pretty particularly during wild flower season. We watched fire works here before the 4th of July. We also watched multiple thunderstorms hit Denver. There is an amazing view of Denver and the plains. No fires are allowed here so you need to bring a stove or equilivant to cook. There are picnic tables at every site and a port a loo. There are also bear boxes for food.
Jul 14, 2019 · TJ AbatelliThis is one of my favorite campgrounds in Jefferson County. The hike in is really easy-my son did it did it carrying all his own (ultralight) gear just before he turned 6.There are bear boxes at the campground for your food, and the views from the trail are gorgeous. Also, you can't beat the price!
Aug 04, 2018 · Sarita Li “The Landlocked Mama” JohnsonGreat hike in campground. Very quiet and secluded. There are only a dozen or so sites and you have to get a permit in Golden to camp here. This is out getaway site when we want to go camping without driving forever. Even though it is hike in hike out children can make the journey and I have seen many having fun with their families at this site.
Dec 01, 2020 · Zachary BartschIt was beautiful and peaceful despite it being Labor Day weekend. Do be aware you have to have a reservation as well as you'll backpack in about a mile to the campground. There is a lock box on the backside of the info board at the parking lot to permit your car overnight.
