Red Fir Flat Group Campground is ideally located on Sand Flat Rd, near the charming town of Mt Shasta, CA 96067, USA. This placement within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest means it is nestled amidst a landscape of majestic fir trees and offers stunning views, often with Mt. Shasta itself as a dramatic backdrop. Its location provides both a sense of immersion in nature and relatively convenient access to local attractions.
Accessing the campground is straightforward but requires attention to detail. Visitors will need to "drive through the Day Use area and Pass Gate (just push gate open)" to reach the group sites. This indicates that while the gate is present, it is designed for passage, ensuring privacy for the group camping area. The general accessibility by vehicle is good, with typical forest roads leading to the area. For California locals driving from various parts of the state, Mt. Shasta is a well-known landmark, making navigation to the general area relatively simple via major highways before transitioning to forest roads.
Once at the campground, its proximity to other popular natural attractions is a significant advantage. It is conveniently located just a "25 Min drive to Lake or Falls," suggesting easy access to various water bodies for recreation and scenic waterfalls for exploration. This makes Red Fir Flat an excellent base for day trips and adventures in the surrounding Mt. Shasta region. Furthermore, despite its natural setting, a past visitor noted that "Phone Signal Was Great," which is a notable convenience for many modern campers, allowing for communication, emergency calls, or quick online checks of local information, while still enjoying the outdoors.
Red Fir Flat Group Campground offers a selection of key services designed to facilitate comfortable and functional group camping experiences. While it maintains a focus on the natural environment, certain amenities are provided to enhance your stay.
- Group-Specific Campsites: The primary service is the provision of campsites specifically designed for larger groups. These sites are more spacious than individual sites, allowing ample room for multiple tents or camping setups.
- Multiple Picnic Tables: As noted by a visitor, each site includes "2 Tables," which is a significant advantage for group meals, games, and communal gatherings. This eliminates the need for groups to bring their own extensive table setups.
- Fire Ring: Each group campsite is equipped with a "Fire Ring," essential for campfires (when conditions permit) and outdoor cooking. This allows groups to gather around a central point for warmth, cooking, and camaraderie. Campers must always check current fire restrictions with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest before lighting any fire and ensure it is completely extinguished.
- Restroom Facility: The campground offers a "Bathroom," though it is noted as "a walk away." This indicates a basic, shared facility, likely a vault toilet, accessible from the campsites. Campers should be prepared with their own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
- No Showers: It is explicitly stated that there are "No showers." Campers should plan for sponge baths or utilize alternative methods for personal hygiene, or be prepared to visit nearby facilities outside the campground if showers are a necessity.
- Good Phone Signal: Uniquely for a forest campground, a visitor confirmed that "Phone Signal Was Great." This can be a valuable service for safety, communication with off-site group members, or in case of emergencies.
Red Fir Flat Group Campground boasts several distinct features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for California locals seeking a group camping adventure. These attributes contribute to its appeal and define the experience it offers.
- Dedicated Group Camping: This is the foremost highlight. The campground is specifically set up for groups, providing the space and amenities (multiple tables, large fire rings) necessary to comfortably accommodate larger parties, fostering a communal camping experience.

- Proximity to Mt. Shasta Attractions: Its location offers convenient access to the region's natural wonders, being only a "25 Min drive to Lake or Falls." This allows groups to easily venture out for day trips to explore pristine lakes, stunning waterfalls, and other recreational opportunities in the Mt. Shasta area.
- Ease of Access to Group Area: While requiring passage through a day-use area, the "Pass Gate (just push gate open)" ensures relatively easy access for vehicles while maintaining a degree of separation and privacy for the group sites.
- Reliable Phone Signal: The reported "Great" phone signal is a rare and significant benefit for a forest campground. It provides a level of connectivity for safety and convenience that is often missing in more remote locations, which can be reassuring for group organizers.
- Opportunity to Observe Snow Melt Organisms: A unique highlight mentioned is the "Good place to observe snow melt organisms come late May." This suggests a unique ecological feature that could be of interest to nature enthusiasts and offers a specific seasonal attraction.
- Family-Friendly Environment: Despite the minor issue with attempted site poaching, the overall sentiment is that it's a "Great place for the Family." The spaciousness and group orientation lend themselves well to family gatherings and activities.
- Rustic Charm with Basic Comforts: While lacking showers, the presence of restrooms, tables, and fire rings provides essential comforts, striking a balance between a natural experience and basic convenience for groups.

May 29, 2025 · Damon TigheMy favorite place to camp in Mount Shasta. First come, first serve. Be respectful and responsible, leave no trace.
Sep 20, 2024 · Janet Forte (yogini)Says “Day use only” and … the day use parking lot says that “dispersed camping is available on east side of the highway” so, you’re good to free no-facilities camp on opposite side the highway. Only suitable for high top van or smaller though.
Aug 27, 2023 · S BerensonStayed at the dispersed campground across the street. Campground is to close to the road and local mountain bikers use as a day use area. Had one group encroach on our site and had the nerve to cop an attitude when asked to move. Will not stay there again.
