Rainbow Lakes Campground

Nederland, CO 80466, USA

4.0
We had a great time camping here during our trip in September 2022 and are looking forward to going back. Get here early to score a spot, they are FCFS with a self-service pay station. In 2022 the cost was $19 for a single site. The campground is at the end of the road, right beside woods, which made for some beautiful scenery and easy access to trails. There were ~ 18 sites - pretty much all are good for small trailers like we have (11ft). We liked how peaceful it was, and appreciated the basics like picnic tables, fire rings, and bear lockers. Vault toilets and trash service were available, which was convenient, but keep in mind there’s no drinking water, electricity, or showers, so come prepared. They had a group site and a few walk in sites. Overall, it’s a great campground in a beautiful location. Can’t wait to return! - Whitney Leach

Rainbow Lakes Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

Nestled high in the picturesque mountains of Colorado, just a stone's throw from the quirky town of Nederland, lies Rainbow Lakes Campground. For Colorado locals eager to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in nature, this campground offers an authentic and unforgettable outdoor experience. Unlike larger, more developed campgrounds, Rainbow Lakes embraces a more rustic, first-come, first-served (FCFS) approach, making it a true gem for those who appreciate spontaneity and a genuine connection with the wilderness. It's a place where the pristine beauty of the Rocky Mountains truly shines, offering a peaceful retreat beside dense woods with easy access to stunning trails and the namesake Rainbow Lakes. Whether you're a seasoned camper with a small trailer or a family looking for a tranquil tent setup, Rainbow Lakes Campground provides the essential amenities for a comfortable stay while keeping you close to the wild heart of Colorado. It embodies the spirit of mountain camping, promising crisp air, starlit nights, and the sounds of nature as your constant companions.

Location and Accessibility

Rainbow Lakes Campground is perfectly situated in the captivating landscape near Nederland, Colorado, with the full address being Nederland, CO 80466, USA. This puts it squarely in Boulder County, within easy reach for residents of the Denver Metro area, Boulder, and surrounding Front Range communities. The campground's location at the "end of the road, right beside woods," speaks to its secluded yet accessible nature. While it feels wonderfully remote, the journey there is part of the adventure. It's important for prospective campers to note that the road leading to the trailhead and the campground can be "a bit rough." While some sedans have reportedly made it, an SUV with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is generally recommended for a smoother and more comfortable ascent, especially during certain weather conditions. This heads-up ensures that visitors can plan their transportation accordingly, guaranteeing a stress-free arrival. Despite the potentially rugged approach, the reward is an unparalleled sense of tranquility and immersion in the high-altitude beauty that Colorado is famous for. The proximity to Nederland also means that campers can easily pop into town for any last-minute supplies or enjoy a meal after their adventure.

Services Offered

  • First-Come, First-Served (FCFS) Spots: Rainbow Lakes operates on a first-come, first-served basis for its approximately 18 sites. This means no reservations are required, allowing for spontaneous trips, though arriving early, especially on weekdays, is recommended to secure a spot.

  • Basic Site Amenities: Each site is equipped with essential camping conveniences. Campers can expect picnic tables for meals, fire rings for cozy campfires (weather and fire restrictions permitting), and bear lockers for safe food storage, a crucial feature in bear country.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides clean and well-maintained vault toilets, offering a fundamental comfort in a rustic setting.
  • Trash Service: For the convenience of campers and to maintain the pristine environment, trash service is available, encouraging visitors to leave no trace.
  • Group Site and Walk-In Sites: In addition to standard drive-up sites, Rainbow Lakes Campground also offers a designated group site for larger gatherings and a few walk-in sites for those seeking a more secluded tent camping experience.

It is important to note what is NOT offered: There is no drinking water, electricity, or showers available at Rainbow Lakes Campground. Campers should plan to bring their own water and be prepared for a primitive camping experience in terms of utilities.
