Imagine waking up to the gentle westerly breeze, free from unpleasant odors, with the expansive Salton Sea stretching before you, framed by a majestic mountain range. As night falls, the true magic begins, with stargazing opportunities that are simply out of this world – clear views of planets like Mars, Jupiter, and Venus are not uncommon. While freight trains may pass by day and night, their presence is generally reported as not overly noisy, adding to the distant, peaceful hum of this distinct landscape. This campground is a testament to the quiet beauty found in California's desert regions.
Mecca Beach Campground is ideally located on Grapefruit Blvd, Mecca, CA 92254, USA, directly on the northeastern shore of the Salton Sea. This strategic position offers campers immediate access to the unique environment of California's largest lake, making it a distinctive destination within the state. For Californians traveling from Southern California, accessing Mecca is straightforward via major highways such as State Route 86 or State Route 111, which run along the Salton Sea. From the greater Los Angeles area or San Diego, the drive typically involves heading east through the Coachella Valley.
The campground's direct proximity to the Salton Sea provides not only stunning views but also opportunities for birdwatching (the Salton Sea is a critical stopover for migratory birds) and photography. While the surrounding area is primarily desert, the town of Mecca is nearby, offering basic services such as gas stations and small markets. Larger towns in the Coachella Valley, like Indio or Palm Desert, are a relatively short drive away for more extensive shopping, dining, and amenities. This balance of secluded natural beauty and convenient access to essential supplies makes Mecca Beach Campground a practical and appealing choice for Texans looking for a unique desert getaway. The roads leading to and within the campground are well-maintained, ensuring easy access for all types of vehicles, from cars to RVs.

Mecca Beach Campground Reviews
Very quiet and peacefully surreal place. Bathrooms and showers were VERY clean. Sites are very spacious. Breath-taking views of Salton Sea and the mountain range. Air was fresh with pleasant westerly breeze... no odor. There's a nice Visitor center with a small museum showing history of Salton Sea, the wildlife and environment. Camp host at Mecca Bch campground (David) was very friendly and introduced himself upon arriving. Stargazing was cool! Could see Mars, Jupiter, and Venus clearly... freight trains run by day/night, but wasn't too noisy.
Mar 03, 2023 · Michael DaviesWe had a great time with family and friends. Camp rangers super helpfull and nice. The best parts are star gazing at night. The sky looks incredible, and the sunrise shining on the mountains in the morning, it looks soo beautiful....
Mar 24, 2025 · Naomi MorenoId only stay here again if it was the only option available. All facilities out of order. They have a Porto potty with shit almost overflowing. No water. Didn’t know any of this until I already paid. Prepare to get 0 sleep since the train runs right by all night long so close that the ground shakes.
Dec 08, 2024 · Aaron ScottNice place for star gazing! Restrooms and showers are clean! Nice place for camping!
Sep 05, 2023 · lovely aleli ruedasMecca Beach is a uniquely quiet and peaceful place. We sat under a shaded, wispy smoke tree and stared out to the Salton Sea and beyond to the hypnotic martian expanse. We were in perfect stillness for more than an hour at this remote desert outpost before we adventured forward, road-touring the otherworldly Salton Sea.
