Loved this campground!! We stayed here July 1-4. Amazingly beautiful. The bathrooms are flushable and include a sink and mirror. Bathrooms do not have electricity, but there are skylights so it’s lit and bright during the day but at night you will need a headlamp or flashlight. It stays relatively clean, with the exception of bugs that get stuck in there. No showers. And no hot water. Water stays cold. There’s a total of 6 individual stalls, 3 on each side.We could not get access to the creek, which was disappointing. I think it was too overgrown. We heard the rush of the flow of water, which was a delightful sound, just sad we couldn’t see it. There’s a small access point if you walk up the path but then it’s a deep drop down. What I loved most was how the campsite is tucked away between the mountains in the valley, so the views were spectacular, but that also means it was very windy. The wind would blow stuff as we were trying to cook, and made the stove fire go out. We made it work. There are also a lot of bugs. I got bit a lot, but that’s nature for you. The sunset and sunrise made it worth it.Campsite is also a decent distant from your neighbors too. - Sandy Kong

McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground Introduce

For Californians yearning for an authentic and serene escape into the heart of the Eastern Sierra, McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground in Mammoth Lakes offers an unparalleled opportunity. Nestled within a picturesque valley, this campground provides breathtaking mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere that truly allows you to disconnect and embrace nature. Unlike bustling commercial parks, McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground delivers a more rustic and quiet camping experience, making it a beloved spot for those who appreciate natural beauty and solitude.

This campground is renowned for its "amazingly beautiful" surroundings, with sites "tucked away between the mountains in the valley," providing spectacular vistas of the towering peaks. Visitors consistently praise the tranquil ambiance, noting the "delightful sound" of the nearby creek, which, even if not always directly accessible, adds to the soothing natural soundtrack. While it's important to differentiate this location from the "McGee Creek RV Park AND Campground" (which offers full hookups and more amenities), the Forest Service campground focuses on a more traditional, dry camping experience. This commitment to a simpler, more natural setting is precisely what draws many Californians seeking to truly immerse themselves in the high desert landscape and the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada.

Despite its primitive nature, the campground does offer surprising comforts, such as "flushable bathrooms" that include a sink and mirror, a rare luxury in many forest service sites. While there are no showers or hot water, the cleanliness and brightness of these facilities (thanks to skylights) are frequently commended. This article will provide a detailed look into what makes McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground a fantastic choice for local Californians, from its stunning location and accessibility to its unique features and essential services.

Location and Accessibility

McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground is conveniently located at McGee Crk Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA. This prime address places it just 2 miles off Highway 395, a major artery running through the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Its proximity to this main highway ensures relatively easy access for Californians traveling from various parts of the state, whether from Southern California, the Central Valley, or even the Bay Area.

The drive itself is part of the experience, offering stunning panoramic views as you approach the campground. Situated between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, visitors can enjoy the charm of nearby towns for supplies or dining, while still feeling wonderfully secluded at the campground. The road into the campground, while sometimes described as "a little bumpy," is generally manageable for most vehicles, including RVs and trailers (sites can accommodate up to 35 feet). Its position in the high desert at an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet means clear, dry air and incredible stargazing opportunities, though it also implies cooler nights and potential for wind, as noted by past campers. The ease of getting to such a naturally breathtaking and relatively untouched location makes McGee Creek - Forest Service Campground an ideal destination for Californians seeking a genuine outdoor adventure without venturing too far off the beaten path.
