Marsden Tract Group Campground Introduce
Are you a Maryland local looking for an accessible and engaging outdoor experience for your group? Look no further than Marsden Tract Group Campground. Nestled along the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) Towpath in Potomac, MD, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and convenient proximity to both wild spaces and urban amenities. Designed primarily for groups, it’s a fantastic spot for scout troops, friends, or families seeking a memorable outdoor adventure without venturing too far from home.
Marsden Tract Group Campground provides a true taste of Maryland's diverse landscapes. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, surrounded by lush woodlands, with the C&O Canal just steps away. While it offers a serene escape, its location also means you’re not entirely cut off from civilization, providing a practical balance for group outings.
Marsden Tract Group Campground is strategically located at Mile 11.5 on the C&O Canal Towpath, placing it between the Carderock Recreation Area and the historic Old Angler's Inn. The address for mapping purposes is Potomac, MD 20854, USA. This prime location near the Great Falls of the Potomac and Mather Gorge means stunning natural features are within easy reach.
One important aspect to note is the access to the campground. It’s primarily a hike-in site, meaning vehicle access directly to the campsites is not permitted. The closest overnight parking areas are at the Carderock Recreation Area or the parking lot across from Angler's Inn, both approximately a one-mile walk from the campsites along the towpath. For those with a lot of gear, there is a temporary stopping area on MacArthur Boulevard near the intersection of Brickyard Road, which can be used for off-loading equipment. However, overnight parking is not allowed in this specific area. Reviewers have noted that the walk from parking can involve a hill and some steps, but it is generally considered "doable." This walk-in nature contributes to the secluded feel of the campground, despite its relative proximity to urban areas.
- Group Campsites: Marsden Tract features six dedicated group campsites, each designed to accommodate up to 30 campers. This makes it ideal for larger gatherings, youth groups, or multiple families camping together.
- Picnic Tables: Every campsite is equipped with picnic tables, providing convenient dining and gathering spaces.
- Fire Rings/Grills: Each site includes a fire ring, perfect for campfires, cooking, and enjoying the quintessential camping experience. Grills are also available.
- Potable Water (Seasonal): A hand-pump well providing potable water is located a short walk up the towpath and across a footbridge. It’s important to note that water is seasonal, typically available from April 15 to October 31. During the non-peak season (November 1 to April 14), campers should plan to bring their own water. The water is treated with iodine, so those with iodine allergies or thyroid conditions should plan accordingly.
- Portable Toilets: Portable toilets are available within the campground, usually located near Campsite 1. Reviewers have highlighted the importance of park service in maintaining these facilities.
- Bike Racks: Individual campsites are equipped with bike racks, a thoughtful amenity for those exploring the C&O Canal Towpath by bicycle.
- Proximity to C&O Canal Towpath: The campground’s location directly on the C&O Canal Towpath provides immediate access to miles of flat, scenic trail ideal for hiking, biking, and leisurely walks.
- Nearby Natural Attractions: Marsden Tract is just south of the breathtaking Great Falls of the Potomac and Mather Gorge, offering stunning geological formations and powerful river views. These areas provide excellent opportunities for photography and exploration.
- Hiking Opportunities: Beyond the towpath, the campground offers access to numerous woodland trails, including the challenging and popular Billy Goat Trail (Sections A, B, and C). These trails cater to various skill levels, from beginners to experienced hikers.
- Fishing: For those with a Maryland fishing license (or a Virginia license for fishing in the Potomac), both the C&O Canal and the Potomac River offer opportunities for fishing.
- Scout-Friendly Environment: The campground was originally built by scouts and is well-suited for scout troops, offering spacious sites and a prime location for outdoor education and activities. Many reviewers confirm its popularity with scout groups.
- Affordable Camping near D.C.: Situated approximately 14 miles outside Washington, D.C., Marsden Tract provides an affordable camping option for those looking to combine outdoor adventure with visits to the nation’s capital and its many attractions, such as the Smithsonian Institution, National Mall, Capitol, and White House.
- Large Campsites: The individual group campsites are noted for being "big" and offering "plenty of room," accommodating up to 30 campers per site. This allows for comfortable setup of multiple tents and group activities.
While Marsden Tract Group Campground itself is part of the National Park Service and generally operates with set fees, the overarching C&O Canal National Historical Park, or third-party booking sites, may occasionally offer promotions related to national park passes or specific seasonal discounts. As of current information, no specific ongoing promotions directly from Marsden Tract Group Campground are publicly advertised. However, it is always recommended to check the Recreation.gov website when booking, as this is the primary platform for reservations and any potential discounts or fee adjustments would be listed there. During the non-peak season (November 16 to April 14), the camping fee is reduced from $40/night to $20/night, offering a seasonal value.

Several Big Sites! Plenty of room for anyone hiking or biking the C & O. Closest campsites to DC less than 10 miles out of town.Note: There is airplane noise throughout the night and it is a bit inland from the rivers edge
Sep 10, 2023 · Robert MerktCampsite 1, 2 and 3 are left off of the foot bridge. 4, 5 & 6 are to the right and are closer to the bridge. All camp site areas are big and have a bike rack.Water is just over the foot bridge. We use a fold up wagon to make life easier. Parking was not a big issue, we hade two vans, a pick up nd trailer and a mini van and a Jeep. We also had 3 camp sites book, so not a lot of competition. The walk from parking the campsite was more of a hill and longer than I expected. Lots of steps as well, but doable.Lot so traffic on the tow path, but nothing major. Other than the being in the flight path of the airport, and of course the bull frogs, not a lot of noise.I would Suggest for the the price, if you are a scout troop, renting 1, 2 & 3 OR 4, 5, and 6 so you have the whole are to yourself.

Mar 12, 2025 · Consuella LalainaA great little campsite that is about 3/4 of a mile walk from the Carderock Parking area. Take the Billy Goat C trail from the parking lot to the C&O towpath. Then take the towpath until you see the sign on the left for the campsites. This is about 100 feet past the Billy Goat B trail sign. Potable water is up the towpath in the opposite direction of the parking lot across a foot bridge. Great location for scout troops, but a bit of a walk. Lots of nature. Saw a bunch of blue herons while I was there.
Aug 22, 2017 · David MitchellConvenient camping spot for youth groups. You have to pack in all your gear but it's a short hike. Great area for firemaking and lots of firewood from fallen trees. Then you're right on Billy Goat B trail for some good hiking.
