Lost Lake Campground-Paonia RD is a picturesque and popular camping area located in the stunning Gunnison National Forest, near the town of Paonia, Colorado. This campground is celebrated for its truly magnificent natural setting, situated right next to the crystal-clear waters of Lost Lake. It offers a tranquil escape, where the "waking up to the sound of birds and the gentle lapping of water is pure peace."
Unlike some larger, more reservable campgrounds, Lost Lake Campground operates on a "first-come, first-served basis," which, as one reviewer noted, can make it "incredibly hard to get in for camping." This adds to its allure, making securing a spot feel like a true prize. However, even if you can only "day-use the area," it is "worth it. Beautiful." The campground is ideal for "low-key recreation and an ideal place for families," emphasizing activities that make the most of the pristine natural environment. It's a place where "the stars are incredibly clear, far from city lights," offering a genuine opportunity to "unwind and connect with nature."
Lost Lake Campground-Paonia RD is located near Paonia, CO 81428, USA, specifically within the Gunnison National Forest. It is typically accessed via Gunnison County Road 12, also known as Kebler Pass Road, from either the Paonia or Crested Butte side. From Paonia, you "Travel 16 miles east of Paonia, CO on Highway 133. Turn right onto Gunnison County Road 12 (Kebler Pass Road) and continue east for another 16 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road #706 and go another 2 miles to the end at Lost Lake Campground." From Crested Butte, you would travel west on Gunnison County Road 12 for approximately 16 miles.
Kebler Pass Road, while generally a "windy, 2WD dirt road," is described as "smooth and should be good for all cars," though caution is always advised on unpaved mountain roads. This makes Lost Lake Campground relatively accessible for most vehicles, including some RVs, though vehicle length is limited to 32 feet max. The campground sits at a high elevation of 9,613 feet, which contributes to its stunning alpine scenery and clear mountain air. The drive itself, especially along Kebler Pass, is renowned for its spectacular fall foliage, passing through one of the largest aspen groves in the United States.
Given its popularity, especially during peak seasons (June to September), and its first-come, first-served policy, arriving early is highly advisable to secure a spot. This campground's location, nestled deep within the National Forest but with manageable access, offers the perfect balance of remote beauty and convenience for Coloradans looking for an authentic mountain lake experience.
Lost Lake Campground-Paonia RD provides a good balance of rustic charm and essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay.
Campsites: The campground offers approximately 16 to 19 campsites, suitable for both tents and RVs (up to 32 feet in length). Sites are "well-maintained, spacious, and thoughtfully spaced for privacy," with "some offering lakefront views." Each site includes a "designated tent location, picnic table and fire ring" for outdoor cooking and gathering.
Water: Potable (drinking) water is generally available at designated locations throughout the campground, a valuable amenity for campers.
Restrooms: Vault toilets are available throughout the campground, providing basic restroom facilities.
No Hookups: It is important to note that there are "no electric or water hookups available at the site" for RVs. An "R. V. dump & fill is available to R. V. campers" nearby or on the broader Mt. Hood National Forest recreation page, which refers to a similar 'Lost Lake' but outside Colorado, so this particular detail for the Colorado Lost Lake Campground might not apply directly.
First-Come, First-Served: Campsites are "not reservable" and are available on a "first-come, first-served basis," meaning early arrival is crucial, especially during busy periods. However, some online sources indicate some sites may be reservable through recreation.gov, so it's always best to verify current policies directly.
Firewood: Firewood is often available for purchase from a camp host or nearby general store, allowing for enjoyable campfires (always check for fire restrictions).
Resort Store Access: While primarily a campground, some sources mention access to a "resort store" (this detail seems to be linked to the Oregon Lost Lake Campground in some search results; for the Colorado Lost Lake, assume basic amenities and local stores in Paonia are the source for supplies).
Lost Lake Campground-Paonia RD is celebrated for its incredible natural beauty and the array of recreational opportunities it offers.
Stunning Lakeside Location: The campground is "nestled right next to a beautiful lake that reflects the sky like a mirror." This offers unparalleled "views" and a serene atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. "Sunrises over the lake are unforgettable."
Excellent Water Activities: "Great for swimming, kayaking," and "canoeing right from their campsite," the lake is ideal for non-motorized boating. "No motors are permitted on Lost Lake," which maintains its peaceful character. Rentals for various watercraft might be available at a nearby resort or through outfitters in Paonia.
Superb Fishing: The lake is "stocked with brown trout, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass," making it a popular spot for anglers. "Great fishing on the lower lake" and "ADA Accessible fishing access with fishing pier, boat launch, and fish cleaning station" make it enjoyable for all.
Hiking Opportunities: "There are a number of hiking and biking trails near the campground," including the "Lost Lake Trail" and trails leading to "Beckwith Pass or Three Lakes Trail," offering "breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests."
Vibrant Wildflowers: "Swing by in mid-to-late summer, when the wildflowers are bursting with color." This adds another layer of natural beauty to the experience.
Peaceful and Secluded: "At night, the stars are incredibly clear, far from city lights." The campground offers a quiet and serene environment, allowing campers to truly "unwind and connect with nature."
Wildlife Viewing: Visitors have "spotted wildlife like moose and elk," adding to the charm of this location. The surrounding forests are home to diverse species.
Equestrian Sites: Lost Lake "also provides a few equestrian sites for those who'd like to enjoy the surrounding area on horseback," a unique feature for horse owners.

For us Coloradans, Lost Lake Campground-Paonia RD is the epitome of the quintessential mountain lake camping experience that we often dream of. Its "absolutely beautiful" setting, with a lake that mirrors the sky and surrounds of "stunning" sunrises, offers an escape that feels both deeply remote and profoundly rejuvenating. This isn't just a place to pitch a tent; it's an opportunity to truly "unwind and connect with nature" in a way that only Colorado can provide.
The fact that it’s a first-come, first-served campground, while sometimes a challenge, also means that those who make the effort are rewarded with a less commercialized, more authentic wilderness experience. The abundance of activities, from "swimming, kayaking" and excellent "fishing" in the peaceful, motor-free lake, to exploring hiking trails bursting with "wildflowers," aligns perfectly with our active, outdoor-loving lifestyle. Seeing local wildlife like moose and elk adds an extra layer of magic to the visit.
Its location along the scenic Kebler Pass, a destination in itself, makes the journey part of the adventure, culminating in a serene haven away from city lights, where "the stars are incredibly clear." Jun 28, 2025 · ashish DondapatiA most beautiful location, and incredibly hard to get in for camping. We were only able to day-use the area - and it was worth it. Beautiful.
Jul 05, 2017 · Chris KelloggThis place is absolutely wonderful. A big field for the kids to play in. Lots of shade for Rvs and you can hear the creek running from your rv at night. They've done a beautiful job with this place.
Jul 28, 2020 · jamie woodThis is a great campground and the host Amy is terrific! In all the First Come, First Serve campgrounds we have been to, you cannot get a weekend site, because people drive up on a Wed or Thur and put a tent, then show up on Saturday. Even though it always specifically says "campsite must be occupied first night". Amy actually enforced the rules! We showed up on Friday (labor day weekend even) and got a great site. #5.The only negative and it was a holiday weekend, were the day people driving through the campground creating lots of dust. Also the lake was very busy by afternoon. Mornings and evenings were magical. Saw Moose!
