The campground anly getting closed for the Season. When its very called in there which is making the place to be not safe for peoples and horses, as you know there is a hors rides available when its open, and also form the wiled fires that had to destroy the area. Now its getting recoverd, and baing closed is for that right now is more important. The road to there is never closed. When y I u driving to the Forest Service Renger Station, before two memorial crests, htere is a rod going down on left. That one will brings you to the lighning campground, asa well as Massengers campground. The gate only closed from the beginning of the Lightning campground. - Nick Cortner

Lightning Point Group Campground Introduce

For Californians seeking a truly immersive wilderness experience away from the urban sprawl, Lightning Point Group Campground in the Angeles National Forest offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature. Nestled amidst fragrant Jeffrey pine, scrub oaks, and manzanita at an elevation of 6,100 feet, this campground is designed for larger groups and even welcomes equestrian campers, providing a rugged yet rewarding outdoor adventure. It's a place where the air is crisp, the stars are bright, and the calls of the wild replace the sounds of city life, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to "drive pretty deep into the forest" as one local reviewer aptly put it.

Lightning Point Group Campground is not your typical drive-up, amenity-rich campsite. It embodies a more traditional, self-sufficient camping ethos, emphasizing personal responsibility and environmental stewardship. While it offers essential features for group gatherings, it requires campers to be prepared with their own water and waste management solutions, ensuring a minimal impact on the delicate forest ecosystem. This commitment to maintaining the natural integrity of the area makes it particularly appealing to experienced campers and groups who value solitude and untouched beauty.

The campground's primary focus on group and equestrian camping sets it apart, fostering a community of like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. It’s an ideal setting for scouting groups, family reunions, or organized rides, offering large gathering areas and dedicated facilities for horses. As the forest continues to recover from past wild fires, the periodic closures ensure the area's ongoing rehabilitation and safety, highlighting a dedication to preserving this precious natural resource for future generations of Californians to enjoy.

Lightning Point Group Campground is situated at Mendenhall Ridge Rd, Forest Service Rd 3N17, Palmdale, CA 93550, USA. Its location deep within the Angeles National Forest means that accessing it requires a dedicated journey into the wilderness. While the address provides a general area, visitors should be aware that the drive involves navigating forest service roads, which can be unpaved, winding, and narrow. One local review mentions that "you gotta drive pretty deep into the forest," which is an accurate depiction of the access.

Directions typically involve taking the Angeles Forest Highway (HWY 2) from Interstate 210 in La Canada, then turning onto Santa Clara Divide Road at Mill Creek Summit, and continuing for a significant distance on forest roads. It's important to note that the gate to Lightning Point Group Campground is typically locked, and access is available by reservation only. This controlled access helps manage usage and preserves the remote feel of the campground.

Road conditions should always be checked prior to departure, especially during or after inclement weather, as rain or snow can significantly impact the usability of forest service roads. While the "road to there is never closed" in terms of the main forest service roads leading to the general area, the specific access road to Lightning Point itself can be seasonally closed or challenging. The campground is open seasonally, generally from the 3rd weekend in April through October 31, weather permitting. This seasonal operation, often due to weather conditions and fire recovery efforts, underscores the need for campers to plan carefully and check current operating status and road closures through official Angeles National Forest channels or reservation websites.

Lightning Point Group Campground is particularly suitable for locals in the California region, especially those within Southern California, who are seeking a more rugged, group-oriented, and truly immersive outdoor experience. Its primary appeal lies in its remote location within the Angeles National Forest, offering a genuine escape from the fast-paced urban environments of Los Angeles and surrounding areas. For Californians who appreciate solitude and a deeper connection with nature, this campground provides an invaluable opportunity to disconnect and recharge without needing to travel across the state.

The emphasis on group camping makes it an excellent choice for organized outings, whether it’s a large family gathering, a scouting troop adventure, or an equestrian club ride. The dedicated facilities for horses are a significant draw for the local equestrian community, providing a rare chance to combine camping with their passion for horseback riding on extensive trails, including segments of the renowned Pacific Crest Trail. This caters to a specific niche within the local outdoor enthusiast community that often finds limited suitable options.

While the "pack in-pack out" policy and lack of potable water and conventional restrooms might deter some, these very aspects attract those who embrace Leave No Trace principles and prefer a more self-reliant camping style. It fosters a greater appreciation for the wilderness and encourages environmental responsibility, aligning with the values of many dedicated outdoor enthusiasts in California. The seasonal closures, though sometimes inconvenient, are a testament to the Forest Service's commitment to safety and the ongoing recovery of the area from past events, ensuring that when the campground is open, it offers the best possible wilderness experience. For those Californians ready to venture "deep into the forest" for a memorable group adventure, Lightning Point provides an authentic and rewarding destination.
