Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground

Campground ★4.0

Ashley, UT, USA

4.0
Love this campground. The host is great, the campground is clean and well maintained. We have come here for several years. My issue this year was the other campers and their dogs. Two people in our group were charged by two different dogs from different groups. The posted sign states that dogs must be on a leash. There were bags of dog poop at the entrance of some campsites. Others didn't even bag it and let the dog poop wherever. NOT the host's job to clean up after your dog. - Lisa B

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground is not your typical drive-up camping spot. This unique destination, located on the shores of the stunning Flaming Gorge Reservoir, offers a true sense of adventure and seclusion. The campground gets its name from its history as a hiding spot for the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy and his gang, adding a layer of folklore to its rugged charm. Only accessible by boat or by a challenging hike, Hideout Canyon provides an experience that is a step above the ordinary. It's a place where you can escape the crowds, enjoy the serene beauty of the reservoir, and truly disconnect from the modern world.

The campground itself is situated within the Ashley National Forest, surrounded by scenic cliffs and forested with pinyon pine and juniper trees. It’s an ideal setting for those who love water activities, from boating and fishing to swimming and canoeing. The unique boat-in access is a major highlight, making it a favorite for those with watercraft who want to camp right on the reservoir. With only 18 single-family sites, it maintains a quiet, intimate atmosphere that is perfect for families and small groups. While the facilities are basic, they are designed to support a comfortable stay in a wild, beautiful setting. It’s a camping experience that combines a sense of history with the incredible natural beauty of the Utah-Wyoming border region.

Location and Accessibility

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground is nestled in Ashley, UT, USA, but the real access point is on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This campground is situated approximately two miles from the nearest road and is accessible exclusively by boat or by hiking. The most common way to get there is by boating from the Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp, which is a popular launch point for many visitors. For those who prefer to explore on foot, the campground can also be reached via the Hideout/Carter Creek Trailhead on Dowd Mountain off Forest Road 094. This hike-in option adds an extra layer of adventure for avid backpackers.

It is crucial for visitors to understand the unique accessibility of this campground. While the provided address is a general location, the actual campsites cannot be reached by a standard vehicle. On-site parking is available, but it is at the launch point, such as the Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp, where you'll leave your vehicle for the duration of your stay. The gravel trails leading from the boat docks to the campsites are steep and can change annually due to fluctuating water levels, so be prepared for a bit of a hike with your gear. This boat-in/hike-in nature is a defining characteristic and a major reason why the campground offers such a unique and secluded experience.

Services Offered

  • Restrooms: The campground is equipped with public restrooms, including flush toilets, for in-season use. A vault toilet is also available for the off-season. These facilities are a welcome convenience in a remote setting. However, based on some reviews, their cleanliness and maintenance can vary, so it's wise to come prepared.

  • Running Water: Running water hydrants are provided at the campground. While available, some visitors report a need to bring their own potable water for drinking and cooking, as the supply can be inconsistent or of questionable quality at times. It is always a good practice to filter or treat any water you plan to consume.

  • Tent Sites: Hideout Canyon offers 18 single-family sites that are specifically designated for tent camping. Each site comes with a cabana, picnic table, and campfire ring, providing the basic necessities for a comfortable stay. The sites are well-spaced, offering a sense of privacy.

  • RV Water Hookup: While the name suggests boat-in access, the campground also has an RV water hookup. However, it's important to clarify that this is likely located at the boat ramp or a nearby area, as the actual campsites are not accessible by vehicle. This is a point of potential confusion and should be confirmed with the park service prior to your trip.

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is furnished with a picnic table, providing a convenient place for meal preparation and dining with a view.

Features / Highlights

  • Boat-In/Hike-In Access: The defining feature of Hideout Canyon is its accessibility, which creates an exclusive and secluded environment. This ensures that only those committed to the journey will be there, making for a quieter and more peaceful experience than more crowded drive-in campgrounds.

  • Stunning Reservoir Views: Most sites at Hideout Canyon offer partial views of the beautiful Flaming Gorge Reservoir, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The scenic beauty is a major draw for visitors who want to relax and enjoy the water from their campsite.

  • Dog-Friendly: The campground allows dogs, which is a great feature for pet owners. However, it is essential for all visitors to follow the posted leash rules and clean up after their pets to ensure a positive experience for everyone.

  • Historical Significance: The campground's connection to Butch Cassidy and his gang adds a fascinating historical element. This tidbit of history can make for fun stories around the campfire and gives the location a unique sense of place.

  • Abundant Water Activities: Situated on Flaming Gorge, the campground is a hub for boating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming. The easy boat-in access means you can enjoy these activities right from your campsite's doorstep.
