Hades Campground

Campground, Fishing ★4.0

Ashley National Forest, 355 Forest Rd 144, Hanna, UT 84031, USA

4.0
My wife and spent three nights at the Hades Campground near Hanna, UT. We loved this campground. The surrounding country is beautiful as it is nestled against the Duchesne River. The campground is very quiet and clean. The road into the campground is a bit long with part of it washboard. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop and explore along the river. The area also has quite a few free-range cattle. Each evening, we enjoyed the company of up to 21 of these friendly visitors. All three mornings, we could hear them mooing in the distance. It was a fun little quirk about the place. The one drawback, we reserved site 4, which we thought was up against the river, like it shows on the map on the website... it was not anywhere near the river and was, in fact, an interior site. DON'T GO BY THE SITE MAP ONLINE.There are only a few sites that are reserved the rest are first come, first serve. We arrived Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of sites available while we were there. I assume a Friday arrival may not be so lucky. We will be returning to Hades and, yes, we really liked site 4 and will be reserving it again. - Joseph Habig

Hades Campground Introduce

For those of us in Utah who seek a quiet, beautiful escape from the daily grind, Hades Campground offers a spectacular destination. Nestled against the serene Duchesne River in the Ashley National Forest near Hanna, this campground is a hidden gem for campers who value peace and a close connection to nature. It's a place where you can relax, explore, and truly unwind in a stunning mountain setting. The tranquil atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway or a longer retreat. While it maintains a rustic feel, it provides just enough amenities to ensure a comfortable stay, making it a favorite for many local adventurers.

Hades Campground is particularly appealing for its genuine, uncrowded feel. As one visitor noted, they "loved this campground" and its "very quiet and clean" environment. The campground is situated in a forest of aspen, subalpine fir, and spruce, offering a beautiful backdrop for your camping experience. One of the most unique and charming quirks of the area is the presence of free-range cattle, which can wander through the campground. For many, this "fun little quirk" adds to the authentic, rural feel of the location, creating a memorable and enjoyable experience that you won't find at more commercial campgrounds. This makes it a great spot for families, as kids are often thrilled by the sight of the friendly visitors.

While the campground is a peaceful retreat, it is important to be aware of certain aspects before you go. The road leading into the campground can be a bit long and washboard, so a little patience is required on the final stretch of the journey. Additionally, while some sites are reservable, many are "first come, first serve," which means a weekday or early Sunday arrival is often a good strategy to secure a spot. It is also important to note that the online site map may not be entirely accurate, as one visitor learned, so managing expectations about a specific site's location is a good idea. However, the beauty of the surrounding area and the quality of the sites themselves make these minor inconveniences well worth it.

Despite these small caveats, Hades Campground consistently draws positive feedback for its peaceful setting and beautiful surroundings. Its location along the Duchesne River provides an excellent opportunity for fishing, and the surrounding trails offer great options for hiking and exploring. The campground is a perfect base camp for a variety of outdoor activities, allowing you to tailor your trip to your interests. Whether you're a couple looking for a quiet escape or a family with children and dogs in tow, Hades offers a welcoming and enjoyable environment. Its rustic charm, combined with the spectacular natural scenery, solidifies its reputation as a premier destination for those seeking an authentic Utah camping experience.
