Location and Accessibility
Guanella Pass Campground is located on Guanella Pass Rd, Idaho Springs, CO 80452, USA. Its address places it directly along the famed Guanella Pass Scenic Byway, connecting Georgetown and Grant, providing not just a destination but a journey through stunning mountain landscapes:
- High-Altitude Setting: Situated at an elevation of 10,900 feet, Guanella Pass Campground offers a true high-alpine experience. Campers should be prepared for cooler temperatures and the potential effects of altitude, but this also means incredibly clear skies for stargazing and breathtaking panoramic views.
- Along Guanella Pass Scenic Byway: The campground is located about 7 miles south of Georgetown on the Byway. This is a paved route (from Georgetown in Clear Creek County to Grant in Park County) for most of its length, making it accessible for most vehicles, though "large RVs are not recommended on the byway" due to the winding mountain roads. The Byway itself is a major attraction, showcasing Colorado's industrial history and natural transitions from lush forests to alpine tundra.
- Split Campground Layout: The campground is "split into two loops by the county road and South Clear Creek." This layout allows for distinct camping experiences, with some sites potentially offering more seclusion or direct creek access.
- Proximity to Charming Towns: The campground is conveniently located near the historic town of Georgetown (a short drive north), offering access to local amenities, shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Georgetown Loop Railroad. This allows campers to easily resupply or enjoy a meal in town.
- Accessibility from Denver: Guanella Pass is highly accessible from the Denver metropolitan area, typically a drive of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. This makes it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway or even a day trip for those looking to experience high-country beauty without an extended drive.
- Creek Access: Reviewers highlight "lots of creek access" to South Clear Creek, making it perfect for fishing, splashing, or simply enjoying the soothing sound of flowing water.
This combination of high-altitude grandeur, scenic accessibility, and proximity to local charm makes Guanella Pass Campground a prime choice for Colorado's outdoor enthusiasts.

Guanella Pass Campground, while providing a rustic mountain experience, offers essential services designed for comfort and convenience within its natural setting:

Eleven of these sites are suitable for RVs (though large RVs are not recommended on the byway itself), and the other seven are designated for tents, with "tent pads" provided. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, perfect for cooking outdoors.
- Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets are available for campers. One reviewer specifically praised them as "cleanest vault toilets I've ever experienced," indicating a high standard of maintenance.
- Potable Drinking Water: Hand pumps with potable water are available at the campground, ensuring access to fresh drinking water during your stay.
- Trash Collection: Trash dumpsters are provided for waste disposal, though it's always good practice for campers to minimize waste and practice Leave No Trace principles.
- Camp Host: The presence of a "Best camp host I've ever met ever, hollah David!" indicates that a dedicated camp host is typically on-site to assist campers, provide local knowledge, and ensure rules are followed. This greatly enhances the camping experience.
- No Hookups: It's important to note that Guanella Pass Campground does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual campsites, aligning with its rustic, Forest Service campground nature. Campers should plan accordingly for their power and waste needs.
- Reservations: While some sites may be first-come, first-served, many sites at Guanella Pass Campground are reservable through Recreation.gov, allowing campers to plan their trips up to six months in advance. Fees apply for camping and for any additional vehicles.
These services provide a solid foundation for a comfortable and enjoyable high-altitude camping adventure.

Jul 06, 2025 · Laura AgugliaAbsolutely amazing campsite. Gorgeous creeks, lots of creek access. Best camp host I've ever met ever, hollah David!Upper sites are noticeably warmer and drier. Sites 10 and 11 can flood but I stayed at 11 and it rained a ton and I managed. Cleanest vault toilets I've ever experienced. Can't wait to go back!
Jul 29, 2021 · Rachel MolieriAwesome campground. Saw big horn sheep on the way up. Fresh crisp air at that elevation. Spacious and spread out sites make you feel like you have a piece of the woods all to yourself. Site #12 was along a creek. We put up hammocks on the other side. Lots of space for kiddos to explore. Used this campground as a base camp to ride the Georgetown Railroad. Had some ice cream while in town and got some crowlers to go from the local brewery.
Dec 06, 2021 · Ron CExtremely beautiful campground. I spent a week out here with my freinds and it was wonderful. The camp host was very nice and provided a lot. Georgetown is still close by with anything else you could need including good food and a friendly atmosphere.
Jul 28, 2018 · Evan IrelandThis was a lovely campground that was well maintained. It was perfect for my small trailer setup. I highly recommend a visit. The spot had a faint cell signal also.
