Gass Peak Road Camping Area Introduce
For Nevadans seeking a true off-grid adventure, the Gass Peak Road Camping Area offers an experience far removed from the neon glow of the Las Vegas Strip. Situated within the vast expanse of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, this primitive campground is not for the faint of heart, but for those with the right vehicle and a spirit of adventure, it provides a unique opportunity to connect with the rugged beauty of the desert. This is a place for pitching a tent under a blanket of stars, where the peaceful solitude is broken only by the sounds of the wind and the wildlife. It’s the perfect spot for a quick overnight stay or a peaceful day trip, offering a level of seclusion that is hard to find so close to a major metropolitan area.
Unlike traditional campgrounds with designated sites and amenities, the Gass Peak Road Camping Area is a dispersed camping spot. This means you can find a suitable place to set up your tent within the designated area, which provides a level of flexibility and privacy that many campers crave. The area is known for its impressive views, particularly the sunsets that paint the sky with vibrant colors and the breathtaking sight of the Las Vegas Valley lights twinkling in the distance at night. However, it's worth noting, as a reviewer mentioned, that while you can see the city, the famous Strip is only visible if you venture further down the road toward its very end—an endeavor that requires a vehicle built for the task.
The Gass Peak Road Camping Area is located at Gass Peak Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89131, USA. It is part of the larger Desert National Wildlife Refuge, which is a key feature to its location and accessibility. The main access to the refuge is from Corn Creek Road, which branches off of US-95 North. Once on the refuge roads, the path to the camping area is unpaved and becomes increasingly rugged.
Accessibility to this area is a significant consideration. The roads leading to the camping area are not paved and are described by visitors as gravel and rough. A high-clearance vehicle is essential to safely navigate the terrain. As one local user review stated, "Definitely need a high clearance vehicle for the gravel roads." For those who wish to venture all the way to the end of the road for the best views, a vehicle with 4x4 or 4WD capabilities is strongly recommended due to the challenging and rocky terrain. It's a journey that is part of the adventure itself, rewarding those who are prepared for the drive with secluded sites and spectacular views. There is on-site parking available, but it is dispersed and not in a formal lot, so you will need to find a suitable spot off the main road.
The services offered at the Gass Peak Road Camping Area are minimal, fitting the dispersed and primitive nature of the site. It is crucial to remember that this is a "pack in, pack out" location, meaning you must bring all your own supplies and leave no trace of your visit behind.
- Tent Sites: This is a camping area exclusively for tents. There are no designated spots for RVs, and the rugged roads would make it impossible to bring a large vehicle in.
- No Water or Restrooms: There are no public restrooms, running water, or trash services. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all their own water and packing out all trash and waste.
- Hiking: The area is known for its hiking opportunities. Gass Peak itself is the highest point in the Sheep Mountains, and there are numerous trails, both official and unofficial, that branch off from the main road, leading to beautiful vistas and challenging climbs.
The Gass Peak Road Camping Area provides a number of highlights for the adventurous camper. These features are what make the area a standout choice for those looking for an authentic wilderness experience near Las Vegas.
- Secluded Environment: A major highlight is the sense of peaceful seclusion. The dispersed camping nature means you are likely to have a large area to yourself, perfect for a quiet night away from the city lights.
- Spectacular Views: The views of the surrounding desert landscape are breathtaking. From the campsite, you can enjoy impressive sunsets and a distant view of the Las Vegas lights at night, creating a unique visual experience that blends nature with urban civilization.
- Good for Kids: For families who are well-prepared and have the right vehicle, this can be a fantastic way to introduce children to camping in a rugged, natural environment.
- Dogs Allowed: This is a dog-friendly area, allowing you to bring your furry companions along for the adventure, as long as they are kept under control.
It is important to note that since this is a primitive, dispersed camping area, there is no formal contact information for reservations or on-site management. The area falls under the management of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, which can be contacted for information on refuge rules and road conditions. However, there is no direct phone number or address for the camping area itself.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Nice area if you're looking to pitch a tent in a relatively secluded area for the night or just as a day trip for a picnic. Definitely need a high clearance vehicle for the gravel roads. This area mostly has views of the highway.
April 17 · Scott LeemingBeautiful view of the city (can't see the strip, unless you take the road all the way to the end.) If you are to take the road to the end, make sure your vehicle can handle it! Our first night was very windy, but not very cold. Great campsite outside of Vegas, with an impressive sunset!
March 10 · Jared VanderDoesYou can see where there were some spots where vehicles used to camp. It is fenced off now. There is a parking area good for about 2-3 vehicles. You can walk in from there and setup a tent. A group of a couple dozen illegal OHVs came through in the middle of the night. Love the DNWR but it feels a bit lawless now.
May 19 · Belter 007Isolated Dispersed camping. Bring water, wear boots and take it easy on the dogs. Rocks are sharp in the hills.
November 21 · Gamer 49Very nice camp if you like 0 service (open) camping. There is no water no bathrooms (pack it in/out). Be careful with fire and bring a lot of water. Sky views toward Vegas are breathtaking. Sky views away from Vegas are dark enough to see a lot of stars, the IIS, and other low earth orbit objects. Rough road to get there 4x4 not required if only going to gass Peak camp.
