Gafvert Campground Introduce
For Minnesotans yearning for an authentic wilderness camping experience, Gafvert Campground, nestled deep within the Nemadji State Forest, offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature. This rustic and serene campground in Holyoke provides a perfect base for outdoor adventures, particularly for those who love ATV and OHV trail riding. Gafvert Campground promises a peaceful escape where the sounds of the forest and the thrill of the trails define your stay.
Gafvert Campground is strategically located at S Net Lake Rd, Holyoke, MN 55749, USA. This places it firmly within the expansive Nemadji State Forest, a vast woodland area in northeastern Minnesota known for its diverse terrain and extensive trail systems. While providing a deep woods experience, Gafvert Campground is more accessible than its remote feel might suggest. It's approximately 44 minutes from Duluth, 1 hour and 49 minutes from Minneapolis, and about 2 hours from St. Cloud, making it a viable destination for a weekend trip or a longer wilderness retreat for many Minnesotans.
Accessing the campground is generally straightforward, with reviews noting that the road into the area is in good condition. However, campers should be prepared for typical state forest road conditions, which can become muddy after rain, adding to the adventurous spirit of the location. As a state forest campground, Gafvert operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not typically accepted. This allows for spontaneous trips but also means it's advisable to arrive earlier, especially on weekends or during peak seasons, to secure a spot. The seclusion of the campground, often described as being surrounded by trees and brush, means that while it feels isolated, it is still reachable for a range of vehicles, from tents to mid-size RVs.
Gafvert Campground offers a back-to-basics camping experience, focusing on essential amenities that complement its natural setting.
Diverse Campsite Availability: The campground provides sites suitable for various camping setups, ranging from tents to mid-size RVs. Visitors have noted that there are plenty of spots available, and the sites are designed to meet most expectations, especially for tent campers, with many surrounded by trees and brush for added privacy.
Vault Toilets (Outhouses): Gafvert Campground is equipped with vault toilets, providing basic restroom facilities for campers. These are typical for state forest campgrounds and are maintained to provide essential services.
Potable Water: Drinking water hydrants are available at the campground, ensuring access to potable water for all campers, which is a crucial amenity for any outdoor stay.
Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Each campsite typically includes a cleared area, a fire ring for campfires, and picnic tables, providing essential components for outdoor living and dining.
Firewood Foraging: A highly appreciated feature mentioned by campers is the availability of deadfall wood for foraging, allowing visitors to gather their own firewood and contributing to the campground's natural grooming. This can save campers from having to transport large amounts of firewood.
Day-Use Area: The campground also includes a day-use area, which might offer additional picnic spots or gathering areas for those visiting for the day.
Gafvert Campground's charm lies in its immersive natural environment and the unique recreational opportunities it presents.
Direct ATV/OHV Trail Access: A major highlight and drawing card for Gafvert Campground is its direct access to an extensive network of ATV, OHV, dirt bike, and UTV trails within the Nemadji State Forest. This makes it an excellent base camp for enthusiasts looking to explore hundreds of miles of thrilling routes, offering a variety of difficulty levels. While some noise from these vehicles is to be expected, reviews indicate it's primarily "coming and going noise" as riders head to the trails.
Secluded and Wooded Sites: Campers consistently praise the privacy and seclusion of the sites, which are often surrounded by trees and brush. This provides a deep woods experience, allowing campers to truly feel immersed in nature and offering a sense of personal space.
Pickerel Lake Access: The campground is adjacent to Pickerel Lake, providing water access for fishing and potentially a shallow boat launch with a dock. This offers opportunities for peaceful water-based recreation away from the motorized trail action.
Foraging for Firewood: The abundance of available firewood for foraging is a notable feature, enhancing the rustic camping experience and reducing the need for campers to bring their own wood, which also helps keep the campground tidy.
Wildlife Viewing and Natural Beauty: Located within Nemadji State Forest, the campground is surrounded by diverse ecosystems, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife watching and enjoying the serene beauty of Minnesota's northern woods.
Minimal Light Pollution: Given its remote location, Gafvert Campground offers breathtaking stargazing views, far from the light pollution of urban areas.

Gafvert Campground Reviews
Nice spot to set up camp. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and plenty of spots were available. Campers ranged from tents to mid size RV. Excellent location for ATV trail riding. Saw many enjoying the trail while we looked around. Sites were what we expected for a state forest. There was a size to meet most expectations especially if your tenting. Road into the area was in good condition but expect it to be muddy after rain. Cell service was pretty weak for Verizon and did loose it for a time.

Aug 31, 2023 · Metta KincadeSome good spots like 1-4 on the lake. Poor T-mobile service, but weboost came through
May 19, 2025 · David BuchananA total of 18 campsites. Ten down by the lake and another eight up the hill. Both have a well water pump and also pit toilets that have 12 inch vent pipes (meaning they don't smell like hell). I missed getting a picture of #7. #12 is an accessibility site and can only be taken by non-disabled if it is the last spot open that day.
