Let me start by saying that I live in my RV - at campgrounds, so my needs may be different than yours. For $34 you really don't get much. A picnic table and fire ring. There are quite a few vault toilets around, but when I was there they desperately needed pumping. No hookups in any site, but water spigots were available. My site, 14, was about as far away from the water as any site in that CG, but the walk to the water isn't bad. It's very easy to get to the shore. I'm a decent fisherman, and the fishing was horrible (I was there in July).Even though the cell coverage maps say there is Verizon coverage - there is not. None, zero. I was not able to even send a text while I was there. The sites were very small. I have a 25 foot Class C and I cannot imagine fitting much bigger rigs in most of these sites. I am also not a fan of the 'parallel parking' camp spots, and there are a few in this CG. Make sure you check the map (which is HORRIBLE on their site) as best you can before you make a reservation. One other thing I found strange is how far the picnic tables are away from the parking spot. If you are in a rig like me, and you use the picnic table...you may be in for a hike every time you go back and forth. And that hike may be relatively steep. Also, the area is in the burn area of the Beckwourth fire, and it shows. Just don't be surprised. Still, there are quite a few trees that provide ample shade in most sites. All in all, this place didn't really work for me, but I can see it as being a nice place for a family outing. - Glen San Marcos

This guide aims to provide you with all the essential details to help you plan a memorable and enjoyable camping trip.

Frenchman Campground offers a distinct outdoor experience, particularly suited for families who appreciate a more rustic approach to camping. While it may not boast extensive modern amenities, its charm lies in its natural setting, the ample shade provided by numerous trees, and the opportunities for close encounters with local wildlife. It’s a place designed for making memories around a campfire, exploring the outdoors, and enjoying the simple pleasures of camping.

Despite some of the challenges noted by experienced RVers, Frenchman Campground holds significant appeal, especially for those in tents or smaller rigs, and families looking for a genuine outdoor escape. The presence of helpful hosts, tame deer, and mischievous chipmunks adds character to the experience, promising an engaging visit for all ages.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the specifics of Frenchman Campground, covering its precise location and accessibility, detailing the services it offers, and highlighting the features that make it a compelling choice for California locals. We'll also provide essential contact information and explain why this campground is perfectly suitable for your next family adventure in Northern California. Get ready to explore the natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere of Frenchman Campground!

Frenchman Campground is located in California, USA, specifically within the vicinity of Frenchman Lake. While the exact town is not specified in the provided information, its association with Frenchman Lake places it within the Plumas National Forest region of Northern California. This area is renowned for its diverse landscapes, including forests, mountains, and numerous lakes, offering a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities.

Accessibility to Frenchman Campground is generally straightforward for most vehicles. While the specific type of road leading to the campground isn't detailed, the mention of RVs being present suggests reasonable access, likely on paved or well-maintained gravel roads. However, it's noted that some sites may present challenges for larger rigs. The review mentions that a 25-foot Class C RV fits, but anything much larger might be difficult in most sites, with some "parallel parking" spots that might be inconvenient. Campers with larger vehicles are advised to consult a map (if available and clearer than the one mentioned in the review) before making a reservation to assess site suitability.

The campground's proximity to the water is a definite plus, as the walk to the shore "isn't bad" and it's "very easy to get to the shore." This allows for convenient access to the lake for fishing (though the review notes poor fishing in July), enjoying the views, or simply relaxing by the water.

It's important for visitors to be aware that the area is in the "burn area of the Beckwourth fire," and signs of this may be visible. However, the presence of "quite a few trees that provide ample shade in most sites" indicates that the natural beauty, though impacted in areas, still offers significant comfort and appeal. This blend of accessibility with a natural, recovering landscape provides a unique experience within Northern California.

Frenchman Campground offers a range of basic services designed to support a traditional camping experience, particularly appealing to those who prefer a more rustic approach without full hookups.

  • Campsites: The campground provides individual campsites, described as "beautiful and spacious." These sites typically include essential amenities for camping. While some sites might be challenging for larger RVs due to size or 'parallel parking' configurations, they are well-suited for tents and smaller rigs.

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a designated surface for outdoor dining, meal preparation, or simply relaxing. It's noted, however, that the distance between the picnic table and parking spot might be significant and even steep at some sites, which is a consideration for campers with mobility concerns or those who prefer close proximity.

  • Fire Rings: Campsites come with fire rings, allowing campers to have campfires for cooking, warmth, and ambiance, provided there are no current fire bans in effect. This is a staple of the camping experience.

  • Vault Toilets: "Quite a few vault toilets" are available throughout the campground. While these are non-flush facilities, they provide necessary restroom services in a natural setting. One review mentioned they "desperately needed pumping" at the time, suggesting maintenance can vary.

  • Water Spigots: Despite the absence of hookups at individual sites, "water spigots were available." This provides a communal source of potable water for campers, reducing the need to bring all water from home.

  • Friendly Camp Hosts: The presence of "wonderful, no-since people that were very helpful and accommodating" hosts is a significant service. Responsive and friendly hosts can greatly enhance a camping experience, providing assistance, information, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Campers should be prepared for a dry camping experience with no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. The available services support a comfortable, yet distinctly outdoor-focused, stay.

Frenchman Campground, despite its basic amenities, boasts several key features and highlights that contribute to its appeal, particularly for families and those seeking a quieter, more natural camping experience in California.

  • Beautiful and Spacious Campsites: A major highlight is the description of "Beautiful and spacious campsites!" This indicates ample room for setting up camp, providing privacy, and allowing families to spread out and enjoy their outdoor space comfortably. The presence of "quite a few trees that provide ample shade in most sites" is also a significant benefit, offering respite from the California sun.

  • Excellent Camp Hosts: The "wonderful, no-since people that were very helpful and accommodating" hosts are a standout feature. Friendly and supportive camp hosts can significantly enhance a visitor's experience, providing a welcoming atmosphere and practical assistance, which is highly valued in a campground setting.

  • Abundant Wildlife Encounters: The campground offers fantastic opportunities for wildlife viewing. Tame deer that "came within about 20’ of us" and mischievous "chipmunks on the other hand will rob you blind!" (implying they are quite bold) provide engaging interactions with nature. While bears were noted to be in the area, not seeing them during a visit is often a relief for campers, though preparedness is always key.

  • Easy Access to the Shore: Despite some sites being further from the water, the review emphasizes that the "walk to the water isn't bad" and it's "very easy to get to the shore." This convenient access to the lake allows campers to readily enjoy fishing, lakeside relaxation, or simply taking in the views without a strenuous journey.

  • Opportunity to Disconnect (No Cell Coverage): For those looking for a true escape from digital distractions, the complete lack of cell service ("None, zero. I was not able to even send a text while I was there") is a significant highlight. It forces campers to unplug, fostering deeper connections with family, friends, and the natural environment.

  • Family Outing Potential: Despite some individual preferences, one reviewer concluded, "I can see it as being a nice place for a family outing." This positive assessment for family recreation underscores its suitability for creating cherished outdoor memories.

These features collectively define Frenchman Campground as an appealing option for those who prioritize spacious sites, a welcoming environment, wildlife encounters, and the chance to truly disconnect in California's beautiful outdoors.

For Californians, Frenchman Campground presents an exceptionally suitable destination, especially for those seeking a tranquil family getaway that encourages genuine disconnection and immersion in nature. Its unique blend of features caters directly to the desires of local outdoor enthusiasts.

Firstly, its status as a "beautiful and spacious" campground with "ample shade" makes it incredibly appealing for California's warm summers. Finding comfortable, shaded sites is a priority for families, and Frenchman Campground delivers on this front, offering a pleasant environment for daytime relaxation and activities.

Secondly, the presence of "wonderful, no-since people that were very helpful and accommodating" hosts significantly enhances the experience. For families, having supportive and friendly staff can make a huge difference, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere and assistance when needed. This human element adds to the overall positive family outing potential.

Furthermore, the abundant wildlife, from tame deer to mischievous chipmunks, provides an engaging educational experience for children and adults alike. These close encounters with nature foster a deeper appreciation for California's biodiversity, creating memorable moments that go beyond typical recreational activities. The opportunity to teach children about wildlife in a respectful manner is invaluable.

Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons for Californians to visit is the complete lack of cell service ("None, zero"). In our hyper-connected world, this forces a much-needed digital detox. For families, it means uninterrupted quality time, encouraging conversations, games, and exploration without the constant pull of screens. This unique feature helps to create a truly immersive outdoor experience, fostering stronger bonds and a renewed sense of peace.

While an RVer noted some challenges with site size and specific features, the campground is clearly viewed as a "nice place for a family outing." This indicates its inherent suitability for tents and smaller setups, emphasizing the value of the natural environment and communal facilities over extensive RV hookups. For Californians looking for a peaceful, wildlife-rich, and truly off-grid family adventure, Frenchman Campground is an excellent choice right in our beautiful state.
