Fort Long Campsite

Campground ★4.0

Osceola, MO 64776, USA

4.0
Fort Long is a campsite in the Piercing Arrow section of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. This is located a long way from the main facilities of Piercing Arrow. It is the closest campsite to Iconium. The tents are nice and fairly new. Each tent has a concrete pad, a one-piece aluminum frame, good canvas and a good rainfly. There are three pavilions here. One has a serious storm shelter - with no wooden structure on top. The other two have no storm shelter but good wooden structures and storage closets. There are two lollies with four toilets and two urinals each. There is a campfire area which is primitive. Some areas have good shade while others are wide open.Overall, the facilities are good, but the location is not. I would be open to another campsite. - Jeffrey Parrish

Fort Long Campsite Introduce

Welcome, fellow Missourians, to your guide to one of the region's most notable camping destinations: Fort Long Campsite. Nestled in the scenic landscape of Osceola, this campground offers a unique and memorable experience for anyone looking to reconnect with nature. Whether you're a seasoned camper, a family with young explorers, or a scout troop planning an adventure, Fort Long provides a rustic yet well-equipped base for your outdoor pursuits. We’ll take you through everything you need to know, from its specific location to the amenities that make it stand out, helping you decide if it's the perfect spot for your next great escape.

The essence of Fort Long Campsite is its dedication to providing a fundamental camping experience with essential facilities. It’s a place where the simple joys of a campfire, a night under the stars, and the sounds of the wilderness are the main attractions. While it has a reputation as a great spot for scouting activities, its public availability means it's a fantastic option for anyone seeking a peaceful and organized outdoor setting. The focus here is on genuine connection with the environment, and the site's layout and amenities are designed to support that goal without over-complicating the experience.

Fort Long Campsite is situated within the expansive H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. It is specifically located in the Piercing Arrow section, though it is described as being a significant distance from the main facilities of that section. Its address is Osceola, MO 64776, USA. This location places it a considerable distance from major highways and urban centers, ensuring a quiet and secluded experience. For those familiar with the area, it is noted as being the closest campsite to Iconium. This proximity can be a key detail for navigation and planning. The rural setting means that visitors should come prepared with all necessary supplies, as quick trips to town are not a simple matter. The remote nature is a double-edged sword: it offers profound tranquility but requires careful planning for all of your needs, from food to gear.

Given its location, accessibility is a crucial factor to consider. While the site is reachable, it’s important to note the distance from major hubs and other scout camp facilities within the reservation. As mentioned in customer reviews, the amount of walking required to get to and from other activity areas can be substantial. Visitors are advised to have good footwear and be prepared for extensive hiking. For those with mobility concerns or those carrying significant gear, the option to drive to other camps within the reservation might be a time-saving solution, effectively shortening a five-mile walk. This is a vital piece of information for anyone planning their logistics, especially families with young children or large groups who need to move between different points of interest.

Services offered at Fort Long Campsite focus on providing basic, yet reliable, amenities for a comfortable stay. They are designed to support a genuine camping experience while ensuring essential needs are met. The facilities are maintained and organized, contributing to a clean and orderly environment for all visitors.

  • Restrooms: There are two "lollies" on-site, each equipped with four toilets and two urinals. These facilities provide a clean and functional option for personal hygiene, a definite upgrade from more primitive camping settings.
  • Tent Sites: The campground is primarily designed for tent camping. Each tent site is well-equipped with a concrete pad, a durable one-piece aluminum frame, and good quality canvas with a rainfly. This infrastructure makes setting up camp much easier and provides a reliable shelter against the elements.
  • Good for Kids: The campsite is noted as being kid-friendly. This is an important detail for families looking for a safe and appropriate environment for their children. The structured nature of the campground and the available activities make it a great place for young ones to learn about and enjoy the outdoors.

The features and highlights of Fort Long Campsite contribute to its overall appeal and what makes it a worthwhile destination for campers. These elements go beyond the basic services, offering unique aspects that enhance the camping experience.

  • Hiking Opportunities: The surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for hiking. The camp's location within the larger reservation means that trails are abundant, catering to both casual strolls and more strenuous treks. The proximity to Iconium suggests a network of paths that can be explored.
  • Pavilions and Storm Shelter: The campsite has three pavilions. One of these is particularly noteworthy as it includes a "serious storm shelter" without a wooden structure on top, providing a secure place during severe weather. The other two pavilions have good wooden structures and storage closets, offering covered areas for gatherings, cooking, and communal activities.
  • Primitive Campfire Area: For those who appreciate the classic camping experience, there is a dedicated, primitive campfire area. This is the perfect spot for gathering at night, telling stories, and enjoying the timeless tradition of a campfire.
  • Shade and Open Spaces: The camp offers a mix of environments. Some areas are well-shaded, providing relief from the sun during hot days. Other areas are wide open, which can be great for stargazing or setting up activities that require a lot of space.

So, what is it that makes Fort Long Campsite worth choosing? It’s an ideal choice for those who value a structured, clean, and organized camping environment. The presence of concrete pads and durable frames makes for a much more comfortable and secure base. Furthermore, the availability of restrooms and storm shelters adds a layer of comfort and safety that isn't always present at every rustic campground. For scout groups, in particular, its neat and organized nature is a big plus. The facilities are clearly designed to handle groups efficiently. While the location is far from other activity points, this can also be seen as a benefit for those seeking a quiet and less-trafficked experience. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the natural surroundings without the constant noise and foot traffic of a more central location. The trade-off in convenience is a gain in tranquility. The focus on essential amenities and a well-kept site makes it a reliable and appealing option for anyone who wants a straightforward, rewarding camping trip in the heart of Missouri.
