Echo Lake Campground Introduce
For Colorado locals, the call of the mountains is an irresistible invitation to explore our stunning natural landscapes. When seeking an authentic camping experience amidst breathtaking scenery, Echo Lake Campground stands out as a prime destination. Located at an impressive elevation near the base of Mount Blue Sky (formerly Mount Evans), this campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the subalpine beauty of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. It's a place where the crisp mountain air, the scent of spruce, and the promise of starry nights create an unforgettable outdoor adventure for those looking to truly connect with Colorado's wilderness.
Echo Lake Campground isn't just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's a gateway to high-altitude exploration and a tranquil retreat from the everyday. While it’s important to note the campground’s elevation – a significant 10,600 feet – which can impact those not acclimated to higher altitudes, it offers an otherwise peaceful and well-maintained environment. Many locals appreciate its convenient access to stunning natural attractions, combined with essential facilities that make camping comfortable. It embodies the rugged beauty and accessible outdoor recreation that Coloradans cherish, making it a suitable choice for seasoned campers and those looking to experience the majestic Rockies firsthand.
Echo Lake Campground is exceptionally located on Squaw Pass Rd (Highway 103) in Evergreen, CO 80439, USA. This places it within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, at the base of Mount Blue Sky, offering immediate access to some of Colorado's most iconic natural attractions. For local Coloradans, the location is a significant draw due to its proximity to the Denver metropolitan area, making it an accessible escape to high-mountain wilderness without an excessively long drive.
The accessibility of Echo Lake Campground is a major highlight. It's conveniently located just off the Mount Blue Sky Byway (Highway 5), which is known as the highest paved road in North America and offers an incredible scenic drive up to over 14,000 feet. From Denver, visitors can take I-70 westbound to Idaho Springs exit #240 (Highway 103), then head south for about 14 miles to the intersection of Highway 103 and Highway 5. The campground is then just a short turn from this intersection. This straightforward access makes it a popular choice for weekend trips. Adjacent to the campground is Echo Lake Park, which includes the Denver Mountain Park system's Echo Lake and the historic Echo Lake Lodge. The lodge provides a convenient spot for hot meals, souvenirs, and a cozy atmosphere within walking distance of the campsites. While the area itself is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer months when the Mount Blue Sky Byway is fully open, the campground itself offers a relatively peaceful base. It provides the ideal blend of serene mountain camping with the convenience of nearby services and unparalleled access to some of Colorado's most spectacular high-altitude scenery, including numerous hiking trails directly from the campground, and excellent fishing opportunities in Echo Lake itself.

Echo Lake Campground Reviews
Very pretty area. Campsites are not private but everyone was respectful. We stayed at site 1 and there were cars driving all night, even with the road to Mt Blue Sky being closed. It might be a pretty loud site when that reopens.Heads up, this is 10,000 elevation and you can feel it, I wouldn’t make this your first night campground if you aren’t acclimated.

Jun 26, 2025 · Charlie EwellOur first time here. We love the Echo lake Campground. The campground is right near the gate to drive up to Mt Evans/ Blue Sky. It is a beautiful and well cared for campground. The hosts are great and make sure everyone is taken care of and the atmosphere is good for enjoying the outdoors. Glad we could stay here just before they close for the end of the season. We’ll be back
Sep 19, 2023 · Mark EEcho Lake campground is a good place to kick back and relax for a bit. Although a little close to the neighboring site (will add photos), the site itself was well cared for and decently level. The toilets are a bit messy and stink a bit but such is to be expected of vault toilets, and I would recommend the use of the facilities at the nearby Echo Lake Lodge (which at the time of writing are out of service due to a septic issue but the porta potties they brought in are well maintained and decently clean). The camp host was nice and was decently accessible (if you can't find her at her trailer try the Lodge). The water is between sites 7 and 8 and is a little difficult to pump. All in all 4/5. Toilets could be better maintained and the sites could be a little better spaced apart, but my family and I had a good time. The hand pump at the water well could stand to be replaced or at least lubricated, but it was usable.I liked my stay here and wish to return at some point. Keep it up y'all!
Aug 02, 2022 · Sam BrzWe truck camped at Echo Lake Campground in June. Echo Lake is a beautiful campground with several hiking trails and great views. We saw a moose at the lake and a fox at the Campground.
