DuPuis Family Campground

Indiantown, FL 34956, USA

4.0
FREE stay, register at the SFWMD site and request a permit. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. Various trees at the camp sites to provide shade. Two cars, two tents, 6 people max per camp site. The sites surround a pond. I didn't use the toilet so I don't have anything to say about it. I couldn't locate the faucet, however we brought enough water. You need the code for the combination lock to open the gate which is included with the permit. There is a short trail spur maintained by the FTA that connects the family campground to loop 1. Will definitely stay again. - Jorge Reinosa

DuPuis Family Campground Introduce

For those of us in Florida who cherish the great outdoors, finding a tranquil and accessible spot to connect with nature is always a treat. DuPuis Family Campground, located near Indiantown, offers a unique opportunity to experience Florida's wild beauty, often without the typical camping fees. This isn't just any campground; it's part of the extensive DuPuis Management Area, managed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), providing a fantastic blend of rustic charm and essential amenities for a memorable outdoor adventure right here in our backyard.

DuPuis Family Campground is particularly appealing because it offers a "FREE stay" – a rarity in today's camping landscape. While it requires a permit, the value it provides for a genuine Florida wilderness experience is exceptional. Whether you're a seasoned camper looking to pitch a tent, or you're bringing a small pop-up, this campground offers spacious sites surrounded by natural beauty. Let’s dive into the details of what makes DuPuis Family Campground a gem for Florida locals seeking a refreshing escape.

DuPuis Family Campground is nestled in Indiantown, FL 34956, USA. This location places it within the DuPuis Management Area, a vast natural expanse that spans parts of Palm Beach and Martin counties in Southeast Florida. While Indiantown itself is a smaller community, the campground's setting within a managed wildlife area means you're truly immersed in "real Florida" scenery, away from the hustle and bustle of major metropolitan areas.

Accessibility to the campground is managed, requiring a specific permit and a gate code for entry, which is provided upon permit approval from the SFWMD website. This controlled access contributes to a more secure and less crowded environment. The campground is reachable via well-maintained roads within the management area. For those looking to combine their camping trip with other activities, the DuPuis Management Area offers multiple gates for access to different recreational opportunities, including hiking and equestrian trails. While it's a retreat into nature, essential supplies can be found in nearby towns like Okeechobee (about 25 minutes away) for any last-minute needs.

DuPuis Family Campground, while offering a free stay, provides a good range of essential services and facilities to ensure a comfortable experience for campers:

  • Free Stay (Permit Required): Camping at DuPuis Family Campground is completely free, but a Special Use License (permit) must be obtained in advance from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) website. This permit includes the necessary gate code for entry.
  • Individual Camp Sites: Each site is equipped with a fire pit (often with a grate for cooking) and a picnic table, providing basic necessities for outdoor living.
  • Shade Availability: Various trees at the campsites offer natural shade, a welcome feature, especially during Florida's warmer months.
  • Restroom Facilities: Pit toilets (composting toilets) are available on-site at the family campground. While some reviews mention an odor, they are a practical amenity for a primitive-style campground.
  • Showers and Flush Toilets: For those preferring more amenities, hot showers and flush toilets are available about a mile down the main road at Gate 3, within the DuPuis Equestrian Campground. Campers at the Family Campground can drive to these facilities.
  • Non-Potable Water: The family campground may have non-potable water available from a spigot or hand pump, suitable for washing or treating for consumption. It's advisable to bring your own potable water.
  • Security: The gated entrance with a combination lock (provided with the permit) enhances security, and the presence of camp hosts or regular patrols contributes to a safe environment.
  • Designated Rules: The permit outlines rules, including maximum occupancy (two cars, two tents, 6 people per campsite) and quiet hours (11 PM to 7 AM), ensuring a respectful camping experience for all. Pets are allowed but must be leashed.

DuPuis Family Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it a standout destination for nature lovers and campers in Florida:

  • Stunning Natural Scenery: The campground is surrounded by beautiful wildlife and diverse Florida scenery, including ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, and pine flatwoods. The sites often surround a central pond, adding to the serene views.
  • Abundant Wildlife: The area is teeming with wildlife, offering opportunities for bird-watching and spotting various creatures, including small alligators near the pond.
  • Extensive Trail System: A major highlight is the access to miles of hiking and horseback riding trails within the DuPuis Management Area. A short trail spur maintained by the Florida Trail Association (FTA) connects the family campground directly to Loop 1 of the DuPuis Loop Trail system, which is part of the larger Ocean to Lake Trail.
  • Auto Trailhead Access: There's a "great auto trailhead located right next to the campground," providing convenient access for exploring the area by vehicle.
  • Spacious Camping Areas: Reviews consistently mention "very spacious camping areas" and sites that are "decently spread out," offering privacy and room to relax.
  • Friendly Host/Vibes: Visitors have reported very friendly and helpful hosts who provide all necessary information upon checking in, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Year-Round Access: As a managed area, the campground is accessible year-round, allowing for different seasonal experiences, though visitors should check for any specific hunt closures.
  • Cell Signal: Reports indicate good cell service (e.g., Verizon LTE), which is beneficial for safety and staying connected while enjoying nature.
  • Primitive, Yet Functional: Despite being a "free" and somewhat primitive campground (no electric/water hookups at family campground sites), it provides essential facilities like toilets and access to showers/potable water within a short drive, making it suitable for a range of camping styles.
