Prepare to leave the digital world behind and discover a tranquil haven where the rhythm of the river sets the pace for your coastal getaway.
Dunlap Campground is strategically located at 15800 CA-20, Fort Bragg, CA 95437, USA. This address places it along State Route 20, the scenic highway that connects Willits in the interior with Fort Bragg on the coast. The campground is situated roughly midway between these two towns, providing a convenient stopping point for those traveling this beautiful route. Its precise location next to the North Fork River ensures a peaceful riverside setting, a key draw for many campers.
Accessibility to Dunlap Campground is straightforward, as it's right off CA-20. This makes it relatively easy to reach by car or RV, though campers should be aware that the area immediately surrounding the campground offers a more rustic feel. While it’s accessible, the campground's design allows for a sense of privacy and natural immersion, preventing it from feeling like a roadside stop. Fort Bragg, with its charming downtown, Glass Beach, and the historic Skunk Train, is approximately 30 minutes to the west, offering opportunities for day trips, resupply, and exploring local attractions. Similarly, Willits, providing access to Highway 101 and additional amenities, is also about 30 minutes to the east. This balance of convenient highway access and a truly wild setting makes Dunlap Campground a practical choice for exploring the Mendocino region while enjoying a serene base camp. The lack of significant highway noise, especially for sites closer to the river, further enhances its appeal as a quiet retreat, despite its roadside location.
Dunlap Campground offers a basic yet functional set of services, emphasizing a more traditional and self-sufficient camping experience. Campers should be prepared for limited amenities and plan accordingly, especially concerning water and connectivity.
- Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets. While functional, it's important to set expectations for a rustic facility. As one reviewer mentioned, they are "gnarly vault 🚽," suggesting they are basic but serve their purpose.
- Fire Pits: Each campsite is typically equipped with a fire pit, allowing for enjoyable campfires. Campers should always check for current fire restrictions in the area before lighting a fire, especially during California's dry seasons.
- Picnic Tables: Individual campsites generally come with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
- Shaded Campsites: The campground offers "lots of shade," which is a significant advantage, particularly during warmer months. The natural canopy helps keep sites cooler and more comfortable.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial for campers to note that Dunlap Campground "has no potable water." Visitors must bring their entire supply of drinking and cooking water for the duration of their stay.
- No Cell Phone Coverage: A defining characteristic of Dunlap Campground is the "no cell phone coverage." This absence of connectivity provides a true opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions and fully immerse oneself in nature.
- Pack It In, Pack It Out: As with many rustic campgrounds, visitors are expected to adhere to a "pack it in, pack it out" policy for all trash and waste to help maintain the cleanliness and natural beauty of the site.
- Suitable for Tents and RVs: The campground is generally suitable for both tent camping and RVs, offering spacious sites that can accommodate various setups.
Dunlap Campground truly shines through its natural features and the kind of experience it offers, appealing to those who seek a simpler, more connected outdoor adventure.
- Riverside Serenity: A major highlight is its location "next to the North Fork River." This provides excellent river access for exploration, relaxation by the water, or perhaps even fishing. The sounds of the river can often drown out any distant road noise, contributing to a peaceful atmosphere.
- Abundant Shade: The presence of "lots of shade" is a significant advantage, particularly in California’s climate. This natural canopy provides comfort from the sun and contributes to a pleasant camping environment.
- Opportunities for Exploration: The surrounding area offers "a lot of places to explore." This includes nearby hiking trails, opportunities for wildlife observation, and simply wandering through the natural landscape.
- Rugged, Authentic Experience: As one reviewer put it, "the ruggedness is the way all campgrounds should be." This highlights its appeal to those who prefer a less developed, more natural camping environment that encourages self-reliance and true outdoor immersion.
- Minimal Highway Noise (Riverside Sites): While located off CA-20, spots closer to the North Fork River experience "no highway noise because there's barely any traffic" on that section of the road, offering a surprisingly quiet experience.
- Natural Mosquito Habitat: Be prepared for insects. As noted by a reviewer, "Just make sure to bring a lot of mosquito repellent." This indicates a healthy natural environment, but also the presence of biting insects, especially near the river.
- Proximity to Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast: Despite its secluded feel, Dunlap Campground is conveniently located within a reasonable drive of the charming coastal town of Fort Bragg and other attractions along the Mendocino Coast, allowing for day trips and exploration of the region's unique offerings.
- Disconnected Environment: The lack of cell phone coverage is a major feature for many. It forces a digital detox, encouraging campers to fully engage with their surroundings and their companions, rather than screens.

Dunlap Campground Reviews
Nice place to camp. Unfortunately this time some Hispanic man on logging road in white truck screams in Spanish every morning Monday- Friday at 5:20am and 2:30pm in morning. He obviously works with a logging company and needs to be stopped and fired.
Jul 31, 2024 · sunny cloudsLike the other reviewer said this campground has no potable water between Willits and Fort Bragg and no cell phone coverage. However this place is beautiful, has lots of shade and a lot of places to explore. I think the ruggedness is the way all campgrounds should be. If you get a spot next to the North fork River will be no highway noise because there's barely any traffic. Just make sure to bring a lot of mosquito repellent.
Jul 13, 2023 · Julian SwendnerThis is a primitive campground with pit toilets and no potable water halfway between Willits and Fort Bragg in the middle of Jackson Demonstration State Forest. There are 17 sites with table, fire ring, and maybe a standing BBQ grill. It is next to Hwy 20 so hwy noise. Most RV's can find a site to fit in. Plenty of trees for shade and next to North Fork Big River which looks like a creek. Weekdays are quiet, holiday weekends not. Campground opens before Memorial Day and closes by October. Close to hiking/biking trails and roads. Cost is $25/night. There is little to no cell phone coverage here.
