Convict Flat Campground is located near Hume, CA 93628, USA. This places it within the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, just outside of the renowned Kings Canyon National Park, specifically in the Sequoia National Forest. The address itself, Hume, CA, gives a sense of its remote yet accessible position within this spectacular natural region of California. It is situated off Highway 180, approximately 19 miles northeast of Grant Grove, providing relatively straightforward access for those traveling from Central California or the wider state.
The geographic positioning of Convict Flat Campground offers a gateway to some of California’s most iconic natural wonders. Being near Kings Canyon National Park means campers are in close proximity to towering sequoia groves, dramatic canyons, and a vast network of hiking trails. The campground’s elevation, around 3,000 feet, provides a comfortable climate for camping during much of the warmer months, avoiding the extreme heat of the valley floor while still being below the highest snow lines.
Accessibility to the campground is primarily by vehicle via paved roads, though visitors should always check road conditions, especially during shoulder seasons, as mountain roads can be subject to closures or require chains. While the campground offers a secluded feel, it’s not entirely isolated. Nearby, within a 10-minute drive, is the Cedar Grove Market, which can be useful for last-minute supplies, though it's always advisable to arrive fully provisioned for a primitive camping experience. The campground's setting allows for a true wilderness immersion while still having some basic conveniences within reasonable reach. Its placement just outside the national park boundaries often means fewer crowds than in some popular park campgrounds, contributing to its secluded and peaceful ambiance.
Convict Flat Campground is designed for a rustic camping experience, and its services reflect this minimalist approach. Based on available public information and reviews, the following services are offered:
- First-Come, First-Served Sites: All 5-7 sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not possible. Campers need to arrive early to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons or weekends.
- Restrooms: The campground provides vault toilets (also referred to as pit toilets). It is important to note that these are non-flush toilets.
- No Running Water: There are no water spigots or potable water sources available at the campground. Campers must bring their entire water supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for meal preparation and dining.
- Fire Pits/Rings: Sites typically have designated fire pits or rings for campfires, though a campfire permit is required, and fire restrictions may be in place, especially during dry seasons. Campers should always check with the Forest Service for current regulations.
- Trash Receptacles: Bins are usually provided for waste disposal. However, campers are always encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out everything they pack in.
Convict Flat Campground's highlights are centered around its natural setting and the unique, primitive camping experience it provides.
- Secluded and Peaceful Environment: With only a limited number of sites (5-7), the campground offers a quiet and uncrowded atmosphere, perfect for those seeking tranquility and an escape from urban noise. Reviewers often emphasize the seclusion.
- Free Camping: A significant highlight is that camping at Convict Flat is free, making it an incredibly budget-friendly option for exploring the Sierra Nevada.
- Proximity to Kings Canyon National Park: The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the iconic Kings Canyon National Park, providing easy access to its giant sequoia groves, hiking trails, and stunning vistas. Nearby attractions include Griffin Falls, mentioned in reviews, offering a potential short hike or scenic spot.

- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: Being nestled in a forested area, there are chances to observe local wildlife, though precautions regarding food storage (e.g., bear boxes, though not explicitly mentioned for every site, are common in the area) should always be followed.
- Stargazing: Away from city lights, the campground offers excellent opportunities for stargazing, providing clear views of the night sky.
- Shaded Sites: Surrounded by trees, many sites offer natural shade, which is a welcome feature during warmer California days.

Convict Flat Campground stands out as an exceptionally suitable destination for Californians seeking a particular kind of outdoor experience. Its appeal lies in its combination of affordability, natural beauty, and a commitment to a raw, unplugged camping adventure.
Firstly, for many Californians facing the high cost of living and recreation, the fact that Convict Flat Campground offers free camping is a significant advantage. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious adventurers, enabling more people to experience the profound beauty of the Sierra Nevada without the financial burden often associated with popular paid campgrounds. This economic benefit allows locals to frequent the area more often or to extend their stays, truly immersing themselves in nature.
Secondly, the campground's primitive nature caters specifically to those who genuinely appreciate and seek a rustic wilderness experience. In an increasingly connected and amenity-rich world, Convict Flat provides a much-needed escape. The absence of running water and flush toilets means campers must be self-sufficient and prepared, fostering a deeper connection with the environment and a reliance on one's own resources. This type of camping appeals to outdoor enthusiasts who value quiet solitude, the sounds of nature (barring the occasional animal or distant emergency vehicle as noted in reviews), and the chance to truly disconnect from digital distractions. It's an opportunity to reset and recharge in a way that highly developed campgrounds cannot offer.
Furthermore, its location near Kings Canyon National Park is a huge draw for California residents. This proximity means that campers can use Convict Flat as a peaceful basecamp for exploring the awe-inspiring giant sequoias, dramatic canyons, and extensive trail systems within the national park. The short drive to attractions like Griffin Falls and the relatively close Cedar Grove Market provide a balance of seclusion and convenience. For locals familiar with the grandeur of the Sierras, Convict Flat offers an intimate entry point into this cherished landscape, often with fewer crowds than the more well-known park campgrounds due to its first-come, first-served policy and basic amenities.
Lastly, the limited number of sites (only 5-7) ensures a low-density camping experience. This means less noise, more privacy, and a greater chance of experiencing the natural environment undisturbed. For Californians looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, even for just a few days, the quiet atmosphere and ample personal space at Convict Flat are invaluable. While some past reviews mention mosquitoes, which are common in natural settings, and a need for campfire permits, these are typical considerations for anyone engaging in genuine wilderness camping.
In conclusion, Convict Flat Campground is an ideal spot for Californians who prioritize free, rustic, and secluded camping experiences within reach of some of the state’s most magnificent natural parks. It’s a place for those who are prepared to embrace simplicity and find immense satisfaction in the raw, unfiltered beauty of the great outdoors.

Convict Flat Campground Reviews
They have 5 sites and it's first come first serve. They have bathrooms but no running water. Good little spot for free. You'll need a permit to start a campfire.
Jun 17, 2025 · D RivasNo flush toilets. No water spigots onsite. Mosquitos present. Very secluded. Only seven spots. Nearby Griffin falls. 10 minute drive to cedar grove market.
Sep 01, 2019 · Brian PaoGreat campground. It's a tad small, but that keeps it from feeling crowded. It's in the National Forrest, so the sites are not as developed as in the National Park, but plenty suitable. We even found a space with a concrete pad for our RV. Sites have tables and fire rings. There also a single pit toilet located there. The campground sits fairly low in Kings Canyon so you are surrounded on all sides by the mountains.
Oct 22, 2018 · Michael KeenbergGreat campground in the national forest basically in the heart of king's canyon. There are 6 or so sites. We took a 24 ft travel trailer. Getting it there was no problem and there was plenty of room for a bigger trailer. It had a vault toilet but no water. On another note ... People left all kinds of trash behind here, including leaving bags of trash in the vault toilet. We packed a bunch of it out but please, if you camp here please be respectful and pack out all your trash. These free campgrounds are getting rarer and rarer. Trashing them will just make it worse.
