Burning Bear Campground is ideally located on Geneva Road, near Grant, CO 80448, USA. This prime position places it along the scenic Guanella Pass Scenic Byway, a renowned route for its stunning vistas and access to high-alpine environments. For those of us coming from Denver or other Front Range communities, the drive is a relatively straightforward and incredibly picturesque journey, heading south on US Highway 285 towards Fairplay, and then turning north onto Park County Road 62 (Guanella Pass Road) at the town of Grant. The campground is approximately 5 miles north on the right.
The accessibility of this location is a key draw for local Coloradans. It allows for a relatively easy weekend trip without extended travel times, maximizing your time enjoying the mountains. Despite its convenient access, the campground feels wonderfully remote and quiet, as noted by many visitors, being set back off the main road. The elevated location ensures cooler temperatures during the warm summer months, offering a refreshing respite from the heat of lower elevations.
Furthermore, the proximity to the town of Grant, though small, provides a last-minute stop for some basic supplies, including firewood, before you truly immerse yourself in the wilderness. However, it's always wise to bring most of your provisions with you. The real treasure of this location lies in its immediate access to world-class hiking and biking trails, which are literally steps away from your campsite. For us Coloradans, the mountains are an integral part of our identity, and Burning Bear Campground offers a quintessential high-country experience that is perfectly suited for locals. Its charm lies in its small, quiet, and unspoiled nature, providing the true escape into the Rockies that many of us seek without the overwhelming crowds found at larger, more commercialized sites.
The accessibility is a major benefit; a relatively short and scenic drive from Denver and other Front Range cities means we can easily pack up for a quick weekend getaway without wasting precious time on long journeys. The elevation provides a welcome relief from the summer heat of the urban areas, offering genuinely cool mountain air for comfortable camping, which is a significant advantage during our warmer months.
Perhaps the biggest draw for local adventurers is the immediate access to incredible trails. Having the Burning Bear Trail and the Abyss Trailhead literally steps from your campsite is a dream come true for hikers, mountain bikers, and nature photographers. We value being able to step out of our tent or RV and directly onto a challenging or leisurely path, exploring the stunning alpine scenery and potentially spotting local wildlife like moose or bighorn sheep. This direct connection to the wilderness is what makes Colorado camping truly special.
The community feedback consistently highlights the spaciousness of the sites, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the overall peaceful ambiance. For Coloradans who appreciate a respectful outdoor environment and prioritize quiet enjoyment over extensive amenities or constant connectivity (given the limited cell service), Burning Bear Campground is an ideal match. It encourages a genuine digital detox and allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that defines our state, making it a beloved local secret for those in the know. It’s truly a gem for experiencing the authentic Colorado mountain camping experience.

BURNING BEAR CAMPGROUND Reviews
Campground is small and quiet. Our campsite was in level and spacious to fit 21 feet travel trailer. Great trails nearby.
Jun 29, 2025 · Bridal KaleidoscopeSmall campground, very quiet, and back off the road quite a ways. Our campsite (8) had a nice climb at the back up a hill that led to some shelf rock for a climb back down. There are no bad campsites here. Lots of room for all of them. Personally I preferred the outer side, and towards the north.Bathroom (men's at least) was very clean. Camp host had firewood for sale, you can also get some at the turnoff from Grant. Bring your supplies with you, there's really not much in Grant for groceries.Burning Bear trail starts just across the road and a few hundred yards down and goes west. Abyss trail goes east from the trail parking lot just south. Both are only about 3 minutes south on foot, and there's a shortcut through the stable to Abyss trail. Don't forget to register with USFS if you do that, you'll miss the wilderness check-in post.Cell service: T-Mobile had zero. AT&T through our van actually had data service which impressed the heck out of me.
Jun 11, 2023 · Jack GlazkoQuiet, quaint and beautiful. Close to Denver. Bathrooms were kept super clean on a regular basis. No real guidance if fire bans apply. Simple signage would be an immense help regards to fire allowance. The campground is under a flight path for planes so regular jet engine sounds are a present constant day and night. It's a nice place. A go-to spot. Relaxing and accessible to outdoorsy adventures.
Jul 19, 2020 · Russ DaleThis campground was perfect for autum camping. There was only one other camper for one of the nights we stayed so the campground was peaceful. The proximity to abyss lake and burning bear trailhead is perfect. We were able to walk to the trailhead in 5 minutes and get ourselves into the wilderness (away from the road)within 15 minutes. It's a great site for kids too, plenty to explore. The only downside was how many yellow jackets were. The parks department had traps set at every campsite but there were too many to trap.
Oct 08, 2019 · Stacy PaulTrash was left by several camp sites, camp host was helpful and lent pair of pliers. Sites are visible from the main road and a stones throw away from local Trailhead.
