Black Creek Lake Recreation Area Introduce
For Texans seeking a serene, natural escape without venturing too far from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Black Creek Lake Recreation Area is a cherished, peaceful gem. Located north of Decatur, this area offers a beautiful opportunity to connect with nature within the managed lands of the LBJ National Grasslands (Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands). This is not a state park, but rather a facility managed by the U.S. Forest Service, providing a tranquil, rustic environment centered around a clean, 35-acre lake.
The recreation area is designed for the self-sufficient camper who values quietude, fishing, and non-motorized water activities. Visitors consistently praise the area for its immaculate maintenance and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and day-use activities like picnicking and bird watching. It offers a fantastic, low-cost opportunity for local families to enjoy the Texas outdoors, providing a rewarding destination for anglers, paddlers, and tent campers alike.
The camping experience here is deliberately simple—focused on the natural surroundings rather than extensive amenities. With its clear waters and well-maintained grounds, Black Creek Lake truly is a refreshing alternative to the more crowded recreational spots in North Central Texas.
***
Black Creek Lake Recreation Area is situated in Wise County, North Central Texas, placing it within easy reach of Texans in the major metropolitan areas, while still offering a sense of seclusion.
- Address: Fs 902, Decatur, TX 76234, USA (The FS 902 designation indicates a Forest Service road).
- Geographic Context: The site is part of the extensive LBJ National Grasslands, a protected area managed for conservation, recreation, and wildlife.
Access is generally good, with clearly marked signs directing visitors to the site from the highway. This is a significant benefit for first-time visitors. The road leading into the campground and the main camping area is usually suitable for various vehicles, though it should be noted that the facility is better suited for tent camping and small Class B or C RVs, rather than large RVs, due to the limited number of spaces and the semi-primitive nature of the sites (no hookups).
The campground has a concrete boat ramp which is well-maintained, though water levels can fluctuate, potentially impacting ramp usability (always check conditions before arrival). For those seeking deeper isolation, the area also offers designated walk-in campsites away from the main parking lot. Be prepared for limited or virtually zero cellular phone service in the area, a highlight for those wishing to disconnect, but a point of caution for others.

- Fees: A Camping Fee of approximately $10 per night is required for use of the campsites. Day-use may also require a fee. Payment is typically made via a pay envelope drop box or potentially using the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay feature (where cellular service permits).
- Parking: On-site parking is available near the main boat ramp and picnic area, with 10 designated spaces.
- Reservations: The campground operates entirely on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted.

Black Creek Lake Recreation Area is worth choosing for Texas residents looking for a clean, affordable, and accessible primitive camping experience centered around water recreation. It offers the best of both worlds: the beauty and quiet of a National Grassland setting, without the extensive travel required for deep-wilderness parks.
The combination of a healthy fishery, clear waters for swimming and paddling, and well-maintained tent sites makes it an exceptional value for the modest $10 nightly fee. It is the perfect destination for the angler seeking a rewarding catch, the family looking for a safe, kid-friendly place to swim, and the traveler who needs a night of quiet solitude. August 22 · Brice WisenerVery well maintained campsite and clearly marked signs directing you to the site coming from the highway.I set up my site near the parking lot. It had a picnic table, grill and fire ring and plenty of level ground to set up tents. In the future, I will hike back into the woods to set up camp as there was traffic coming and going throughout the night. Boat ramp is maintained well as are the vault restrooms. On a side note, I had virtually zero cell phone service here. I prefer to be disconnected but some may not like it.
December 29 · Marc MJust okay. Shady af. Not as safe as Lake Ray Roberts. Unstaffed area where you pay on the honor system. Usually some questional, maybe even homeless people there. You may or may not be offered drugs for sale depending on the day. Take $6 cash per car.Great for kayaking once you're actually on the water.
May 05 · Branana DWe went accidentally on National Public Lands Day (Saturday September 30th 2017) and am glad.I never knew about this cool little area, until aunty&unky told me to check it out. We found a geocache or two and enjoyed walking through the beautiful grasslands with our dog (psycho-bunny-hunter). It was a beautiful day. Will return to check it out in different seasons, and maybe camp. 🖒
November 10 · Kenneth CollinsworthSecluded and well kept. Pretty quiet and dark, perfect for camping. $2 per night, the cheapest campsite I've ever been to. Primitive camp sites with fire rings everywhere. No water or electric hook-ups. Pack out campgrounds.
