Backcountry Campsite #87

Fontana Dam, NC 28733, USA

4.0
Great campsite, with one caveat - to get to the actual campsite is about 150 yd steep hike up to the top of the island. This isn't so bad, but it gets a little old considering you have to go all the way down to the lake to fetch water. Overall though, the campsite is great! The main camp area has plenty of room for a few tents (albeit, a bit sloped) and there is another smaller flat area about 10 yards from the main camp area that can be utilized for more space. The views from around the island are great (as is bout anywhere around Lake Fontana really). Will definitely be staying here again at some point! - Justin Bennett

It’s more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains region, offering an unforgettable adventure for both seasoned backpackers and those looking to discover the quieter side of North Carolina’s natural wonders.

Backcountry Campsite #87 is specifically located at Fontana Dam, NC 28733, USA. While the address points you to the general vicinity of Fontana Dam, it’s important for visitors to understand that this is a backcountry site, meaning it’s not accessible by car directly. Its remote location is part of its charm and what makes it such a special retreat. Access typically involves a journey by water, most commonly across Lake Fontana, followed by a hike to the campsite itself. This journey adds an element of adventure and helps to preserve the pristine nature of the site. For those coming from various parts of North Carolina, Fontana Dam serves as the primary gateway, easily reachable via well-maintained state roads. The remoteness ensures a peaceful experience, far from road noise and light pollution, allowing for incredible stargazing and an undisturbed natural environment. Planning your transportation, whether by personal boat, rented pontoon, or a shuttle service across the lake, is an essential part of preparing for your visit to this unique island sanctuary.

As a backcountry campsite, Backcountry Campsite #87 offers a more rustic and self-sufficient experience compared to developed campgrounds. While it doesn't boast amenities like bathhouses or electrical hookups, it provides the fundamental services essential for a true wilderness stay:

  • Designated Camping Area: A cleared space suitable for pitching tents, offering a relatively level (though potentially sloped in areas) surface for overnight stays.
  • Fire Pit: A designated area for building campfires, crucial for cooking, warmth, and a quintessential camping experience, provided local fire restrictions are observed.
  • Natural Water Source Access: Proximity to Lake Fontana allows campers to fetch water. It is crucial to remember that all water from natural sources must be filtered, boiled, or chemically treated before consumption to ensure safety.
  • Waste Management (Pack It In, Pack It Out): While not a "service" in the traditional sense, the expectation for campers to adhere to Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and waste is a fundamental aspect of maintaining the site's integrity.
  • Scenic Views: The primary service, arguably, is the unparalleled access to stunning natural beauty and panoramic views of Lake Fontana and the surrounding mountains.

Backcountry Campsite #87 truly shines through its unique features and highlights, making it a standout destination for those seeking an authentic wilderness experience in North Carolina:

  • Island Location: This campsite is uniquely situated on an island in Lake Fontana. This provides an unparalleled sense of seclusion and incredible water views from various points around the island. The journey to the island itself becomes part of the adventure.
  • Elevated Campsite: The actual camping area is perched atop the island, requiring a moderately steep ~150-yard hike from the water's edge. While this adds a physical challenge, it rewards campers with elevated perspectives and potentially better airflow.
  • Panoramic Lake Views: From around the island, and even from the campsite itself, visitors are treated to stunning vistas of Lake Fontana, a vast reservoir known for its clear waters and winding coves amidst forested mountains.
  • Spacious Main Camp Area: The primary camping spot offers ample room for several tents, though some areas may be sloped. This provides a comfortable base for groups or families.
  • Additional Flat Space: A smaller, flatter area located approximately 10 yards from the main camp provides extra space, offering flexibility for tent placement or gear setup.
  • Secluded & Peaceful Environment: Due to its backcountry nature and island location, the campsite offers a profound sense of peace and quiet, far removed from urban noise and light pollution. It's an ideal spot for stargazing and experiencing true wilderness serenity.
  • Opportunities for Exploration: While the main pathway across the top of the island might be the most defined, the island setting itself offers a sense of exploration, particularly on the north side, which is noted as a good spot to stop for lunch even if not staying at the campsite.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The remote setting increases the chances of encountering local wildlife, providing an authentic nature experience.
  • Return Appeal: As noted by previous visitors, the site's unique appeal makes it a place many campers look forward to revisiting, highlighting its lasting positive impression.

For those planning a trip to Backcountry Campsite #87, direct contact for the campsite itself isn't applicable in the traditional sense, as it’s a remote wilderness site managed by the National Park Service (NPS) or similar authorities overseeing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park backcountry. However, inquiries regarding permits, regulations, and access typically go through the official channels for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
