Aspen Campground

4.0
Campground is very basic - no water, outhouses only. No cell coverage. The campground reopened this year after flood wiped it out. Roads rough but you really don't need to be going fast anyway. Some campsites very close together so would be great for groups; some campsites larger and more isolated. Each site had a fire ring and a bear box. My site was along the stream by a waterfall which was very loud so all you heard was the very calming sound of the water and no noise from the campground. Campground host, Amy, had quite a job with her being the only one. Outhouses that I used were always clean with adequate toilet paper. Met some fabulous people camping during my time there. A bit of a drive to Yosemite but the scenery is outstanding. The town of Lee Vining has some restaurants and a grocery with supply of almost everything. Make sure to visit Mono Lake and look at the wonderful formations along the trail. Another lovely place outside of the park is Saddlebag Lake. Great hiking there and you also can use a taxi boat to go across the lake. Elevation 10,000 ft. - Weenie Swishh

Aspen Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a true wilderness camping experience. It's important to note that this is a basic campground, focusing on core necessities rather than extensive amenities. This simplicity is part of its charm for those seeking to disconnect and enjoy nature in its raw form.

  • Outhouses Only: The campground provides well-maintained outhouses for sanitation. As one reviewer highlighted, "Outhouses that I used were always clean with adequate toilet paper," ensuring a comfortable experience despite the rustic nature.
  • No Water: Campers should be prepared to bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and washing. This is a crucial detail for planning your stay and ensures self-sufficiency.
  • No Cell Coverage: Aspen Campground offers a true digital detox. Without cell service, campers can fully immerse themselves in their surroundings without the distractions of calls or notifications. This fosters a deeper connection with nature and fellow campers.
  • Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires (when conditions permit and burn bans are not in effect). This provides warmth, a place for cooking, and a classic camping ambiance.
  • Bear Boxes: To ensure the safety of both campers and local wildlife, each site includes a bear-proof food storage locker. This is essential for storing food and scented items securely, preventing unwanted animal encounters.
  • On-Site Campground Host: A campground host, like Amy mentioned by a past visitor, is available to assist campers, provide information, and ensure a smooth experience. Their presence adds a layer of support and community to the campground.

Aspen Campground boasts a variety of features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for your next California camping adventure. These aspects contribute to its unique character and the memorable experiences it offers.

  • Rustic and Peaceful Atmosphere: The campground is praised for its "very basic" nature, which contributes to a profound sense of peace and quiet, allowing campers to truly unwind.
  • Secluded Streamside Sites: Many campsites are located along a stream, with some even offering the soothing sound of a "waterfall which was very loud so all you heard was the very calming sound of the water and no noise from the campground." This provides an incredibly tranquil and private experience.
  • Variety of Campsite Configurations: Whether you're part of a group or seeking solitude, Aspen Campground can accommodate. "Some campsites very close together so would be great for groups; some campsites larger and more isolated," offering flexibility for different camping preferences.
  • Proximity to Natural Wonders: Its location near Lee Vining puts it within easy reach of Mono Lake's unique tufa towers and Saddlebag Lake's scenic hiking trails. While Yosemite National Park requires a bit of a drive, the journey itself is scenic and rewarding.
  • Opportunity for Digital Detox: The complete lack of cell coverage is a significant highlight for those looking to genuinely disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature and their companions.
  • High-Elevation Experience: At 10,000 feet, campers can enjoy cooler temperatures, stunning high-altitude flora and fauna, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This elevation also contributes to the sense of being truly "away from it all."
