Woolum Campground is situated on an Unnamed Road in St. Joe, AR 72675, USA. This location is key to its appeal, as it provides direct access to the Buffalo National River at the Woolum access point. For those familiar with the region, it’s about 8 miles from the nearest town, ensuring a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. Getting to Woolum is an adventure in itself, often involving a mix of paved and gravel roads, which only adds to the anticipation of a truly rustic getaway. This accessibility to the Buffalo River makes it an exceptional launching point for various water activities, including canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, particularly when water levels are favorable. Its proximity to significant trailheads also makes it a prime base for hikers looking to explore the extensive network of paths within the Buffalo National River area. The remote nature of its location means less light pollution and noise, offering an unparalleled stargazing experience that truly sets it apart.
Woolum Campground is renowned for its primitive camping experience, which means it offers a limited but essential set of services designed for those who appreciate self-sufficiency and raw nature.
- Free Camping: One of the most significant services offered by Woolum Campground is that it is completely free of charge. This makes it an incredibly accessible option for all Arkansans looking to enjoy the outdoors without the burden of camping fees.
- River Access: The campground provides direct and easy access to the Buffalo National River. This is a crucial service for paddlers, swimmers, and anglers who want to spend their days on or by the water. Many spots are available right on the water's edge.
- Vault Toilets: For convenience, there are typically two pit toilets (vault toilets) available at the campground. While primitive, these facilities offer a necessary basic amenity for campers.
- Undeveloped Campsites: Unlike many developed campgrounds, Woolum features an open-field concept with no designated sites. This allows campers the freedom to choose their preferred spot, whether along the river or nestled along the road between the toilet facilities. This flexibility is a unique service for those who prefer a less structured camping environment.
- Fire Rings (Implied): While not always explicitly listed, primitive campgrounds like Woolum often have existing fire rings or allow for campfires in designated areas, enabling campers to enjoy traditional campfire experiences. Campers should always check for any current burn bans before lighting a fire.
Woolum Campground's allure lies in its natural features and the authentic, unspoiled experiences it provides. It's a place where the landscape itself is the main attraction.
- Riverside Camping: A major highlight is the opportunity to camp directly on the Buffalo National River. This provides campers with stunning waterfront views, the soothing sounds of the river, and immediate access for water-based activities. The ability to "get a spot on the water" is highly praised by visitors.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Reviewed as "very quiet," Woolum Campground is a perfect sanctuary for those seeking to escape the noise and demands of modern life. Its secluded nature ensures a serene environment conducive to relaxation and connecting with nature.
- Access to Premier Trails: The campground offers direct access to significant hiking routes, including the Ozark Highlands Trail (OOAT) and High Water Mark Trails. This makes it an ideal base camp for avid hikers and backpackers looking to explore the region's diverse ecosystems and scenic bluffs.
- Dispersed Camping Freedom: The lack of designated sites means a more flexible and less crowded camping experience. Campers can spread out across the large open field, finding their ideal private spot for tents or small trailers.
- Natural Beauty: Surrounded by the picturesque scenery of the Buffalo National River area, the campground is a haven for nature photography, wildlife viewing, and simply enjoying the untamed beauty of the Ozarks. The changing seasons bring different visual delights, from vibrant spring blooms to brilliant autumn foliage.
- Primitive Charm: For those who appreciate "roughing it" slightly, Woolum's primitive nature—no water hookups, limited amenities—is a feature, not a drawback. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of camping.
Woolum Campground is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Buffalo National River. As a primitive, free campground, it does not typically have an on-site office or direct phone line for reservations, as sites are first-come, first-served.

May 06, 2024 · Chris DavisWonderful campground with easy access to the Buffalo River, the OOAT, and High Water Mark Trails. Stayed here overnight at the beginning of a multi-day trip. I cannot wait to come back when the water is higher.
Oct 08, 2024 · Isolation OverlandOne of my favorite places to camp for a large group. Easy access to the Buffalo River. Pit toilets are kept up in good shape. The Rangers are nice and always helpful.
Dec 30, 2023 · Tony CressOpen free camping... Can't complain. Right on the river, cool spot. Road getting in is tight, steep and can get muddy! Would be tricky with a bigger rig.
