For New Hampshire locals drawn to the rugged beauty and endless outdoor opportunities of the White Mountains, White Ledge Campground offers a compelling basecamp. Situated in Albany, at the very foot of the iconic Mount Chocorua, this campground provides a balance of convenient accessibility and a natural, private setting that appeals to a wide range of campers. Whether you're a seasoned hiker eager to tackle challenging trails, a family seeking a peaceful natural retreat, or an RVer looking for a convenient spot with good access, White Ledge offers a welcoming environment. As one happy camper noted, it's "Very close to the base of my favorite mountain—Chocorua! Conveniently located near (but away–from) the North Conway area. Close enough to food and civilization to enjoy nature..." This sentiment perfectly captures the appeal of its location.
White Ledge Campground is a U.S. Forest Service facility, known for its rustic charm and direct access to the vast expanse of the White Mountain National Forest. It's designed to provide a back-to-basics camping experience, allowing visitors to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness. While some sites are closer to the main road and may experience road noise, many reviewers highlight the positive aspects, noting that "The campground itself is great, the sites are far apart and offer decent privacy. Very level, and some of the walk-in spots are really cool!" This focus on spacious, private sites with good tree coverage makes it a favored choice for those seeking a tranquil setting. Plus, the campground's pet-friendly policy, as highlighted by a satisfied owner of a "little Spaniel-mix: Remmie," means your furry family members can join in on the adventure, making it a truly inclusive outdoor experience for New Hampshire residents.
White Ledge Campground is strategically located on Chocorua Mountain Hwy (Route 16), Albany, NH 03818, USA, placing it firmly within the renowned White Mountain National Forest. Its positioning offers excellent accessibility for New Hampshire residents, making it a prime spot for weekend getaways or longer vacations.
The campground is found approximately 5 miles south of the popular tourist hub of North Conway, and directly at the base of Mount Chocorua. For those traveling from Southern New Hampshire, the primary route would be I-93 North, connecting to US-3 N, then merging onto NH-16 N, which leads directly to the campground. From points east or west, connecting to NH-16 is straightforward. The campground is also notably accessible from the Kancamagus Highway (NH-112), providing a scenic drive into the heart of the mountains. While some reviewers mention "a little close to a main road," referring to Route 16, the convenience of this location is undeniable. It provides the perfect balance: immersed in nature, with direct access to hiking trails like the White Ledge Trail and the Carter Ledge Trail, yet still "close enough to food and civilization" in North Conway for supplies, dining, or a day of exploring local shops and attractions. This blend of wild beauty and urban proximity makes White Ledge Campground an incredibly convenient and appealing option for New Hampshirites eager to explore their state's iconic natural landscapes. It’s important to note that while the address is Chocorua Mountain Hwy, the campground entrance is distinct and should be looked for carefully, especially in the dark, as one camper noted a "pothole at the entrance" which needed addressing.
White Ledge Campground, as a U.S. Forest Service facility, offers essential services for a comfortable camping experience while maintaining a rustic, natural environment.

- Pit Toilets: Basic vault toilets (outhouses) are available throughout the campground for sanitation needs. Reviews mention these are generally "well kept and maintained several times daily."
- Water Spigots: Potable water spigots are available within the campground for campers to fill containers. However, it's explicitly noted that these are "not for washing dishes," emphasizing water conservation and adherence to Leave No Trace principles.

White Ledge Campground shines with several key features and highlights that make it a desirable choice for campers seeking an authentic White Mountains experience.

- Excellent Site Privacy: Reviews consistently praise the "sites are far apart and offer decent privacy" and "great tree coverage," providing a sense of seclusion and natural immersion.

- Limited Amenities for True Outdoor Immersion: For those who prefer a more rustic experience, the lack of extensive amenities like bathhouses with showers or full hookups contributes to a genuine wilderness feel.
- AT&T Connectivity: A unique and convenient highlight for a forest campground, as "AT&T wifi is strong and available in this campground," which can be a relief for those who need to stay connected.
- Affordable Rates: As a U.S. Forest Service campground, White Ledge typically offers more budget-friendly rates compared to private campgrounds.
As a U.S. Forest Service campground, White Ledge Campground operates under a standardized fee structure and does not typically offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the way a private business might. The pricing is set by the federal government.
- Standard Fees: Camping fees are generally fixed per night per campsite. It's important to check the official White Mountain National Forest website or call the ranger district for the most current rates, as these can change.
- No Reservation Discounts: Since sites are typically first-come, first-served, there are no discounts for advance bookings.
- Federal Pass Accepted: Holders of interagency passes like the America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass may receive discounts on some fees, though this might primarily apply to day-use fees at other federal sites, rather than camping fees directly at White Ledge. It's always worth checking.
The "offer" at White Ledge Campground is the inherent value of an affordable, rustic camping experience in a prime White Mountain location. Its natural beauty, direct trail access, and relative privacy are the main draws, rather than promotional pricing. New Hampshire residents should plan their visit accordingly, understanding that securing a site during peak season (summer and fall foliage) often requires early arrival due to its first-come, first-served policy. Always verify current fees and policies with the U.S. Forest Service directly before your trip.

White Ledge Campground Reviews
Very close to the base of my favorite mountain—Chocorua!Conveniently located near (but away–from) the North Conway area. Close enough to food and civilization to enjoy nature... a little close to a main road, but not terrible. AT&T wifi is strong and available in this campground, as well ... unlike the ones located on the Kancamagus highway, [Which IS good, at times] where there's nothing at all. Small, comfy, convenient ≈ happy. They allowed our little Spaniel‐mix: Remmie, also. Which was very nice. (She was a good girl) ❤️
May 16, 2025 · Rod FooterThe campground itself is great, the sites are far apart and offer decent privacy. Very level, and some of the walk-in spots are really cool! Great location! The road noise is extremely bothersome, especially the sites on the "14-28" loop where you're almost sleeping on top of route 16. It kills the ambiance for outdoor enjoyment and makes sleeping hard if you're in a tent.No amenities except for a pit toilet and water spigot (not for washing dishes). The pothole at the entrance hasn't been fixed, and we couldn't see it on our way in in the dark and damaged something in our rig. Needs to be addressed asap!
May 26, 2025 · Elisha VerhaarThis is a very convenient location to north conway NH. It’s very well run by the host however the condition of the entrance to this campground and its roads are a disgrace. We almost damaged our rig just entering the campground. This needs to be addressed by the management. The host has attempted to address this issue to no avail. We would not stay again until the asphalt was addressed. Such a shame. Beautiful location.
Aug 02, 2023 · mary macisaacNice campsite close to the town of North Conway. Bathrooms were well upkept and the campground was quiet for the night as we had a spot further away from the road. About 40 minutes away from AMC Pinkham Lodge where we went to hike up Mount Washington.
Aug 30, 2021 · MichalThis is a well maintained campsite. They provide you with a picnic table and fire pit. There is a decent sized clearing you can play on. The bathrooms are vault toilets and very clean. John the host is very friendly and offers firewood for $8 a bundle. This camp is close to the Conway area and the Kancamagus. It’s right of route 16 so there is some traffic noise.
