If you are a local who views camping as a vibrant social event, where golf carts are a primary mode of transportation and late-night festivities, including fireworks, are part of the fun, then Wheelock Lake Campground might indeed be your "happy place." The review stating it's a spot to "kick back and relax, pop open a beer and forget the long work week" suggests an atmosphere tailored for those seeking a lively, celebratory escape rather than quiet solitude. While the staff when seen were described as "really nice," the communication channels (e.g., email response) and consistency of on-site presence might vary.
In summary, for Hoosiers looking for a quiet, serene, and strictly regulated camping experience, Wheelock Lake Campground might not be the ideal fit. However, for those who embrace a more boisterous, community-driven, and "party-friendly" atmosphere, with ample opportunity for recreational vehicle use and lakeside fun, this campground could very well be the perfect local retreat. It's recommended that potential visitors call ahead to discuss their expectations and understand the current park policies to ensure their camping adventure in Indiana is exactly what they're looking for.

Wheelock Lake Campground Reviews
This is our third season at Wheelock. It's my happy place. A place to kick back and relax, pop open a beer and forget the long work week kinda place.
Jun 11, 2025 · Sherri DoerfleinNot like anyplace we have ever camped before. We had a corner site which was awful. The amount of golf carts, atv, razors and a dirt bike is ridiculous with everyone driving no matter what the age or alcohol consumption. At night is even more fun, all vehicles come out in force in 1 hour we had 40 drive by our site, and it lasts until at least 1:15am. Let's not forget the fireworks in the campground, with everyone so close I can't believe a trailer didn't catch on fire. There is very few site markers and the office closes at 6pm even on a holiday weekend. No gates. No security. No Internet and yes it was advertised I even tried to get it on my phone figuring it was our Firestick and no luck. The staff when I did see them were really nice. Unfortunately we also had no picnic table and the fire ring that we are not supposed to move was in-between the electric and water spigot. We did try to contact the night we came in thru email and no response to that either.
Sep 04, 2023 · Doug NewWe were fired-up about getting a spot next to the lake. Then we read each of us would need to pass a background check. They wanted US to pay for it! All for the privilege of paying them $3000.00 for the site. We read the reviews, seems like the ones already there need a background check. We drove down to look at the sites. There were three in a row. They were so small you would have problems getting the camper in place and you'd have neighbors so close you could hear them snore. We read that people ride ATVs all night long, so not so peaceful.
Oct 17, 2024 · Paul Whitecotton's Keto KitchenWe were going to camp at this campground, I have a new job in the area. Muddy roads potholes Ragdoll rundown RVs and mobile homes you can see a lot of razors and other karts and stuff that make noise you talk to the people and they say Well they're trying to get it to be better they've owned it for 4 years how much more time do you need it looks like a third world country I would not feel safe leaving my family there while I go to work decided to drive 30 more minutes away from the job site
Jan 02, 2025 · Jay StegmanWe have camped at numerous campgrounds across 26 states and I have to say that the campers at this campground were the most disrespectful and entitled we have ever encountered. The ATV's and golf carts drive ALL hours of the day and night blasting their music and screaming at the top of their lungs. Around 10:30pm on the first night I shouted "It's quiet hours." to one of the golf carts as they went by. They then came back with two additional golf carts and told us that the rules only apply to us, not them because they are seasonal and that we have no right to tell them to quiet down. We spoke with management about it around 11:15. The constant stream of golf carts and ATVs with loud music continued until about 1:30am.Management followed up with us the next day when we went to buy some firewood. She was very polite and clearly a one woman show. She said she spoke with them that morning. That night the sounds were even worse. They were spiteful and would drive by our campsite every five minutes screaming. The sites weren't well maintained. We didn't have a picnic table. We did have a fire pit, but it was filled with trash and was unusable. We go camping to escape the hustle and bustle. We want to enjoy nature, hear the birds chirping, and have conversations around a campfire to relax with friends and family. This was not the environment for that.
