Waterloo Equestrian Campground

8400 Loveland Rd, Chelsea, MI 48118, USA

4.0
I am rating the equestrian campground only. I will reference the trails in the review, but supplemental to the campground. The equestrian (horse) campground has 25 rustic sites. There are a set of pit toilets in the campground near the center of the loop and another set nearby in the day use area. Be sure to bring your leveling apparatus for most sites if you need to be level for your fridge. Do not trust the DNR reservation system as your source of whether sites are level. Each site has at least 2 picket posts for your high line. No electric. Water is available via a solar pump in the day use area. A good number of trees provide some shade and the campground is surrounded by woods. There is a fire pit and picnic table at each site. You can park anywhere on the site as there are no gravel or cement pads. There are bunkers for your horse manure. The trail system starts right out of camp and is relatively well maintained by the Waterloo Horsemen's Association in conjunction with the DNR. Some of the northern part of the trail was flooded while we were there but was passable and there was a marked detour available. You can ride 12-15 miles of trail in one day without traversing anything but the initial section twice. - Steve Keim

Location and Accessibility

The Waterloo Equestrian Campground is strategically located at 8400 Loveland Rd, Chelsea, MI 48118, USA. This address places it squarely within the sprawling Waterloo Recreation Area, which is the largest state park in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, encompassing over 20,000 acres. Its position offers excellent accessibility for equestrians and campers from across Southeast Michigan and beyond, including major hubs like Ann Arbor, Jackson, Lansing, and the greater Detroit metropolitan area.

Access to the campground is straightforward via well-maintained roads. For those traveling on I-94, a common route would involve taking Exit 153 for Clear Lake Road, then heading north. Loveland Road, where the campground is situated, is easily navigable even with horse trailers and larger RVs. This convenience minimizes travel time, allowing campers to quickly settle in and begin their outdoor adventures.

A significant aspect of its accessibility, particularly for equestrians, is its direct connection to the park's extensive trail system. The review explicitly states that "the trail system starts right out of camp," meaning riders do not need to trailer their horses to a separate staging area. This seamless access is invaluable, offering immediate entry to miles of scenic bridle paths within the Waterloo Recreation Area. Additionally, a day-use staging area, complete with a pavilion and mounting block, is located nearby, providing further convenience for both overnight campers and day visitors.

Services Offered

The Waterloo Equestrian Campground focuses on providing essential, rustic services tailored specifically for horse owners and those seeking a traditional camping experience. While it emphasizes a natural, unplugged environment, it offers crucial amenities for a comfortable stay:

  • Rustic Campsites: The campground features 25 spacious, grassy rustic sites designed to accommodate campers with horses. These sites do not offer electric hookups, promoting a true connection with nature.
  • Picket Posts: Each campsite is equipped with at least two picket posts, allowing campers to securely tie their horses on a high line right at their site.
  • Vault Toilets: Pit toilets (vault toilets) are available within the campground loop (near the center) and also in the nearby day-use area, providing basic sanitation facilities. As noted, they are functional for a rustic setting.
  • Water Availability: Water is accessible via a solar pump located in the day-use area. Campers should bring their own containers to transport water to their sites. While potable, it's a rustic water source.
  • Fire Pits and Picnic Tables: Every campsite includes a fire pit for campfires and cooking, along with a picnic table for outdoor dining and gathering.
  • Horse Manure Bunkers: Designated bunkers are available for the proper disposal of horse manure, aiding in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within the campground.
  • No Paved Pads: Campsites do not have gravel or cement pads, allowing campers to park anywhere on their site, offering flexibility, but it also means campers should bring leveling apparatus for their RVs, especially for refrigerators.
  • Showers at Nearby Campground: While rustic, campers at Waterloo Equestrian Campground can access showers at the Sugarloaf Lake Campground, which is "just up the road," for a small fee (typically available May through October).

These services are fundamental for equestrian camping, ensuring the basic needs of both horse and rider are met in a natural setting.
