Campground ★3.0

Kinnear, WY 82501, USA

3.0
I’m not sure who stays here, but I know we turned ourselves around. First of all, the road to get there is like riding over a cheese grater. If you want to put your suspension to the test and see how well your RV will hold up, then you go for it. “Would not recommend,” -my husband. The gravel road was so unnecessarily bumpy it rattled the wires under our camper loose- that’s a first for us. We’ve done a lot of boondocking and this is among the worst. This is not a hidden gem- it’s hidden for a reason. No trees, no shade, and lots of trash you can bake in the sun next to. The first site we went to was full of trash. The next one was also full of trash with additional graffiti all over the picnic area. This is also not a nice “lake,” but just a collection of all the runoff from the surrounding farms. I’m not sure who would let their kids swim in here, as they’re likely to glow in the dark as a result. Just know, you’ve been warned. - Ari

Vogel / Southside Campground Introduce

Vogel / Southside Campground offers a rustic and authentic camping experience for Wyoming locals who appreciate a more primitive style of outdoor adventure. Situated on the shores of Ocean Lake, this campground is a no-frills destination for those seeking to get away from the crowds and enjoy the rugged beauty of the landscape. It is not a manicured, resort-style park, but rather a place that demands self-sufficiency and a love for the unpolished wilderness. With its open spaces and lakeside access, it is a spot where campers can truly feel like they are roughing it and connecting with nature on their own terms.

The campground is a topic of varied opinions among those who have visited. While some may find its primitive nature and lack of traditional amenities challenging, others appreciate its quiet, spacious setting and the sense of freedom it provides. It is a place that requires visitors to be prepared and to adhere to a "pack it in, pack it out" mentality. The charm of this campground lies in its potential for a peaceful escape. For those who enjoy boondocking or dry camping, and are not reliant on a full suite of services, Vogel / Southside offers a unique opportunity to set up camp with a view of the lake, away from the hustle and bustle of more populated areas. It is an ideal spot for those who know what to expect and are ready for a true backcountry experience.

Vogel / Southside Campground is located near Kinnear, WY, 82501, USA, on the shores of Ocean Lake. Its exact location places it in a secluded area, which contributes to its primitive feel. The road leading to the campground is a gravel road, and as noted by a reviewer, it can be "unnecessarily bumpy," requiring careful navigation. This is a crucial detail for anyone planning to visit, especially those with larger RVs. The access road has been described as "uneven" and "narrow" with "very sharp 90-degree" turns, making it unsuitable for large rigs. Visitors with smaller campers, tents, or who are experienced in navigating rough roads will be better equipped for the journey.

The campground's remoteness is a major part of its appeal, but it also means that campers must be prepared with all necessary supplies, as there are no nearby convenience stores or services. While the drive may be a test of your vehicle's suspension, the reward is a quiet spot with plenty of space. The campground also features a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, which provides a small measure of accessibility despite the rough road. The location on Ocean Lake offers a scenic backdrop, even if the lake itself is a subject of debate among reviewers.

The services offered at Vogel / Southside Campground are very basic, reflecting its primitive nature.

  • RV Electric Hookup: A key service for some sites is the availability of an electric hookup, which can be a valuable convenience for campers. This feature provides a modern comfort in an otherwise rustic setting.

  • Restroom: The campground is equipped with a restroom, specifically a vault toilet. While there is no running water, as noted by a reviewer, the presence of a vault toilet is a basic but essential amenity for campers.

  • On-Site Parking: Each site provides ample on-site parking, with plenty of space for tents or RVs. The sites are spacious, allowing for easy setup and for campers to have a good amount of personal space.

Vogel / Southside Campground has a few highlights and features that can be appealing to the right kind of camper.

  • Big Picnic Pavilion: There is a large picnic pavilion available, which is a great feature for groups or families. It offers a sheltered area with a nearby fire ring and a standard charcoal grill, making it a good spot for gatherings.

  • Picnic Shelters: In addition to the large pavilion, there is a smaller picnic shelter located near the vault toilet, providing similar amenities for a more intimate group.

  • Good for Kids: Despite its rustic nature, the campground is noted as being "good for kids." The open, grassy areas and the lake provide a natural playground where children can explore and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Lake Access: The campground offers easy access to Ocean Lake via several boat ramps. This is a significant feature for those who enjoy boating, fishing, or simply being by the water. The amount of grass and gravel limits the amount of mud, which is a practical benefit for campers.

  • Spacious Sites: The campground provides plenty of space to set up tents or park RVs, a feature that is highly valued by campers who prefer not to be crowded. This generous spacing contributes to the quiet and private atmosphere.

Choosing Vogel / Southside Campground is a decision to embrace a truly rustic and independent camping experience in Wyoming. It is a place that will not suit everyone, particularly those with large RVs or a preference for modern amenities like showers and running water. However, for the right type of local camper, it offers a rewarding and peaceful retreat. The campground's positive features, such as the electric hookups, spacious sites, and access to Ocean Lake, make it a viable option for those who are prepared for the challenges of the access road and the primitive nature of the facilities.

The presence of a picnic pavilion and smaller shelters makes it a great spot for group gatherings or family outings. The fact that it is "good for kids" is a plus, as children often thrive in a less structured, natural environment. The most important reason to choose this campground is for its uncrowded, open feel. For locals who are tired of fully-booked, bustling parks, Vogel / Southside offers a genuine escape where you can find solitude and a direct connection to Wyoming’s landscape. While some reviews mention issues like trash and graffiti, this can be an opportunity for community-minded campers to leave the area better than they found it. Ultimately, Vogel / Southside is worth choosing for those who are seeking a true primitive camping adventure and are not afraid of a little ruggedness on their way to a quiet, lakeside spot.
