Viento State Park South Campground Introduce
Nestled along the majestic Columbia River in the heart of the stunning Columbia River Gorge, Viento State Park South Campground offers Oregonians a convenient and scenic retreat into nature. Imagine pitching your tent or parking your RV amidst lush greenery, with the soothing sounds of the river just a short stroll away. This campground provides a refreshing escape from the everyday, inviting you to immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and recreational opportunities that make the Gorge a world-renowned destination. While it offers all the charm of riverside camping, it’s also known for a unique sonic experience, ensuring a memorable stay for those who come prepared.
Viento State Park South Campground is frequently praised for its cleanliness and well-maintained grounds, creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for all visitors. The shady spots provide a welcome respite on warm days, making it comfortable for both tent campers and RV enthusiasts. Its prime location in Cascade Locks not only offers direct access to the Columbia River but also places you within easy reach of numerous Gorge attractions, from hiking trails and waterfalls to charming small towns. This accessibility makes it a practical choice for a quick weekend getaway or a longer vacation exploring the wonders of the region.
However, a distinctive feature of Viento State Park South Campground, and indeed many locations within the narrow confines of the Columbia River Gorge, is its close proximity to both a major highway and an active railroad line. While the highway noise tends to fade into the background for most, the trains, particularly at the nearby railroad crossing, are known to be quite loud due to required horn blowing. This is a common aspect of camping in this specific part of the Gorge. For light sleepers or tent campers, bringing earplugs is highly recommended – a small consideration for the incredible convenience and beauty this riverside campground offers. Despite the trains, the allure of waking up steps from the Columbia River, surrounded by the Gorge's natural splendor, makes Viento State Park South Campground a beloved spot for many local Oregonians seeking an authentic outdoor experience.
Location and Accessibility
Viento State Park South Campground is strategically located in Cascade Locks, Oregon, with its address being Cascade Locks, OR 97014, USA. This places it directly within the iconic Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, a federally protected landscape renowned for its dramatic basalt cliffs, lush forests, and numerous waterfalls, all carved by the Columbia River.
The campground's accessibility is one of its major strengths. It is situated right off I-84, the primary interstate highway running through the Columbia River Gorge, making it incredibly convenient for travelers coming from Portland, which is approximately an hour's drive to the west, or Hood River, just a short 10-minute drive to the east. The direct highway access ensures a straightforward journey to the campsite.
Upon arrival, campers will find clear signage leading to the various sections of the campground. While the campground is compact, its design allows for relatively easy navigation. The proximity to the Columbia River means that many sites offer the advantage of being just a short walk to the water's edge, perfect for those looking to fish, launch small watercraft (where permitted), or simply enjoy the riverside ambiance. It's important for visitors to note the close proximity to both I-84 and, critically, an active railroad line with a crossing. This means that while convenient, there will be ambient noise from both sources. However, the ease of access to the park and its surrounding natural wonders, including popular windsurfing and kiteboarding spots, makes Viento State Park South Campground an incredibly appealing option for Oregonians seeking to explore the heart of the Gorge with minimal travel hassle. The short distance to towns like Hood River also means easy access to supplies, dining, and other amenities, enhancing the convenience factor for campers.

Viento State Park South Campground Reviews
Nice campground, clean and shady right near the river. We camped in the northern campground spot 53. Very small spot for tent. Spots are close together but neighbors are respectful, at least for our weekend. It is right off the highway but that was pretty easy tune out, unfortunately the rail road line is right here as well, I think I counted 4 or 5 trains blowing by from 10pm to 630am..... And they in fact have to blow the horn as their is a rail road crossing. I've gone to campgrounds where reviewers complained about the trains, that was nothing compared to this lol, it is LOUD! If you are sleeping in a tent, bring ear plugs, if you don't or forget, fear not, Walmart is 10 minutes down the highway! You will want them!!
May 12, 2024 · Dorothy PierceThe campground is located in an incredibly convenient location, is well maintained, and just a short walk to a beautiful river area. However, it is also right near a railroad crossing where the trains are required to blow their horns while going through, and are incredibly loud. I only stayed one night and was woken up by the trains at least 4-5 times even through my earplugs as they are so loud.
Jun 05, 2024 · Kate SmathersBest weekend of our lives, everyone left with tears in their eyes because we didn't want to go home! Beautiful camp site meant for smaller tents. Definitely set up for glamping after the renovations but it was still a beautiful experience.Rangers and camp hosts were helpful and accommodating when we needed to move camp sites.
May 14, 2024 · Alivia LewisNice area with lots of trees. Do NOT get a site nearest the train tracks if train noise bothers you. Those rails are some of the busiest in the country. On the other side of the park you have constant traffic on I-84. The sites are all back in and can be difficult for longer bumper pulls. Check the internet for site photos before booking. Our site had a power pole support in it so that I could not put out our awning. Also, keep your items secure. We had our cooler stolen in the middle of the night. I talked to a Deputy Sheriff who drove through and he said they have a big problem with that at this park.
May 28, 2023 · R. UnSirTent spot C9 is small and with substantial rocks. Bring only small (2/3-person) tent. Pic attached is my suggested limit size (I was lucky).
