Nestled along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, this campground offers a rustic and immersive encounter with nature, providing a breathtaking backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Unlike traditional campgrounds, Thornhill Broome allows you to set up your tent directly on the beach, putting the soothing sounds of the waves and stunning ocean vistas right at your doorstep. It's a place where the grandeur of the California coast meets the simplicity of outdoor living, offering an unparalleled escape from the everyday hustle. Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the joys of sleeping under the stars, Thornhill Broome presents an opportunity to connect with the natural beauty that makes California so special.
Thornhill Broome Campground boasts an enviable location at 9000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265, USA. This prime spot places it directly on the celebrated Pacific Coast Highway, making it easily accessible for residents across Southern California. Its proximity to Malibu means it's a convenient drive for those coming from Los Angeles, Ventura County, and surrounding areas. The beauty of its location isn't just about accessibility; it's about the immersive coastal experience it offers. Being right on the PCH means you’re not far from other local attractions, scenic viewpoints, and the charm of Malibu itself, should you wish to explore beyond the campground. However, the true draw is the direct beach access, allowing campers to step out of their tents and onto the sand, with the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out before them. While the direct highway access is a boon for convenience, visitors should be mindful of the typical PCH traffic, especially during peak seasons or weekends. Despite this, the stunning oceanfront setting and the unique opportunity to camp literally on the beach make the journey well worth it for many local enthusiasts looking for an authentic California coastal experience.
When it comes to services offered, Thornhill Broome Campground emphasizes a simple, back-to-basics camping experience, focusing on direct engagement with the natural environment.
Beachfront Tent Camping: The primary service is the ability to set up tents directly on the sandy beach, offering unparalleled ocean views and direct access to the water.
Porta Potties: For essential facilities, the campground provides porta potties. It's worth noting, based on customer feedback, that cleanliness can sometimes be an issue, so campers should be prepared for a rustic restroom experience.
Trash Receptacles: Designated areas for trash disposal are available. Campers are advised to be mindful of overflow and potential odors, especially when selecting a campsite.
Parking: Parking is typically available, though space can be limited, especially during busy periods. Campers should plan accordingly.
It's important for visitors to understand that Thornhill Broome is not a full-service campground with amenities like showers, hookups, or extensive recreational facilities. Its appeal lies in its raw, natural beauty and the opportunity for an authentic, no-frills beach camping adventure. Campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies, including water, food, and any specific comfort items, to ensure an enjoyable stay. This minimalist approach is part of its charm for those who seek to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the coastal environment, without the distractions of modern conveniences.
Thornhill Broome Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that draw local Californians seeking a unique outdoor experience.
Direct Beachfront Access: One of the most significant highlights is the ability to pitch your tent directly on the beach. This offers an unparalleled connection to the ocean, with the sound of waves as your constant companion.
Stunning Ocean Views: Waking up to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean is a key draw. The sunsets are particularly spectacular, providing a picturesque backdrop for evening relaxation.
Rustic Camping Experience: For those who appreciate a less developed, more natural camping environment, Thornhill Broome delivers. It's a place to truly disconnect and embrace the elements.
Unique Location on Pacific Coast Highway: Its spot on the iconic PCH offers not only ease of access but also the inherent charm of being in a world-renowned scenic area.
Opportunity for Wildlife Observation: The coastal setting provides opportunities to observe local marine life and birds, adding an extra dimension to your outdoor adventure.
Ideal for Simple Getaways: If your idea of camping involves minimal fuss and maximum natural beauty, this campground is an excellent choice for a quick escape from city life.
Proximity to Malibu: While offering a secluded feel, the campground is still close enough to Malibu to access essential services or explore local attractions if desired.
However, it is crucial to note that some aspects, based on recent customer reviews, require careful consideration. The presence of rocks on the beach, tar/oil sludge, and the need to be cautious of high tides when setting up tents are important practicalities. Additionally, issues concerning staff demeanor and the cleanliness of facilities like porta potties have been mentioned, suggesting that campers should manage their expectations regarding amenities and service levels. Despite these points, the sheer beauty of the location and the unique opportunity to camp on the beach often outweigh the potential inconveniences for many who prioritize an authentic coastal experience.

Very simple setup. You can set up a tent on the beach, it's a beautiful location.
Jan 01, 2025 · Jennifer PelayoFirst let’s start with how rude the young men are whom work at the kiosk. This alone will make us never be back. Upon arrival the staff was very unprofessional. The questions we had were met with short, rude answers. The two young men acted as if we were a bothering them. The porta potties are disgustingly dirty. Trash all over the beach and the oil sludge/tar was impossible to get off of our feet 👣. Rocks everywhere on the beach was is fine but be careful because while swimming close to shore one pelted me in the leg and it hurt! I had a nice bruise for a week. The tide gets so high in the evening you need to be very cautious as to where you pop your tent. Be careful of staying next to the trash bins because they overflow and STINK 🤢. All in all after years of camping we will not be back here. Years ago this was one of the best. The park rangers sure have let this one go downhill and it’s a shame.obviously not all is their fault but the bad attitude and the unclean nature of the campsite needs to be addressed.
May 02, 2025 · CourtWe went here for a birthday camping trip as my SO and I share the a birthday with 1 day apart! Scheduling online was a little finicky but worked out in the end and that what matters honestly haha. We got I believe camping spot 17 and what an amazing spot and view. Even just getting into the camp grounds the mood and atmosphere was so welcoming and nice (the ranger who let us in was so kind to us!). We definitely recommend to bring your own firewood as the ones that they sell are 8 dollars a pack (so if you know a guy def use that person instead) and bring a bigger tent if you're going to camp in a tent as the condensation goes wild during the night and makes the inner walls of the tent SOAKING wet so to not have your blankets and sleeping bags drenched you need more space in the center of the tent. Each site allows up to 3 cars and as long as your inside of your section I think up to 8-10 people (or as many as can fit honestly can't really tell?). A big warning for those who want to get into camping and want to do beach camping as an introductory camping experience BRING MORE LAYERS in terms of clothes, blankets, sleeping gear. If you get too hot you can always take off a layer but if you're freezing you if you don't have that layer you're going to be MISERABLE. Typically I usually bring my own toliet paper for restroom things but the port-a-pottys seem to have some decent TP and was pretty clean (but as clean as a outdoor port-a-potty would be.
Feb 10, 2024 · Dorky “DorkyBaesian”Our favorite place to camp on the beach!! For the experience of sleeping on the sand it is completely worth the $35!! The sunsets are amazing. We’ve loved camping here for many years. Book in advance as it gets booked fast!! We got lucky and found a cancellation last minute. Check in is easy and the spaces are large!! There is easily enough room for 4 or 5 big tents and 3 vehicles. Each spot has a fire pit and a picnic table. There are porta-pottys(this was the only negative for us as they were gross and messy) No showers. Water spigots are along the road. The camp host has firewood for sale most of the time. Closest store is about 20 minutes away. We will keep staying here!
