Only complaint that we had is you could smell the outhouse is close to the campsites. Otherwise it was an awesome experience! I’m not sure if anything over 32 feet would fit in this campground even though they say they can accommodate up to 40 feet. Very tight camp sites for larger RVs and travel trailers. - Chris M

Tahkenitch Landing Campground Introduce

Hello, Oregon adventurers! Are you dreaming of a serene escape where the gentle lapping of lake water replaces city sounds and towering coastal trees provide the perfect shade? Then allow us to introduce you to Tahkenitch Landing Campground, a peaceful haven nestled along the shores of Tahkenitch Lake in Gardiner, Oregon. For us locals, who cherish the diverse beauty of our state – from rugged coastlines to lush forests and tranquil lakes – Tahkenitch Landing offers a unique blend of these elements, making it an ideal destination for a truly authentic Oregon outdoor experience. This article is crafted with you in mind, our fellow Oregonians, to highlight why this campground is a perfect spot for your next peaceful retreat into nature.

Tahkenitch Landing Campground is not your typical bustling RV park with all the hookups. Instead, it offers a more rustic, dry camping experience that emphasizes natural beauty and direct access to recreational activities. It's a place where you can launch your kayak directly from the boat ramp, cast a line into the lake for bass and trout, or embark on a rewarding hike through the Oregon Dunes to the Pacific Ocean. While some sites might be on the tighter side for larger RVs, the recent efforts by the Forest Service to combine smaller sites into more accommodating spaces reflect a thoughtful approach to enhancing the camper experience, particularly for small groups. We'll delve into the specifics that make Tahkenitch Landing a beloved choice for Oregonians, from its beautiful lakeside setting to its well-maintained basic amenities, ensuring you have all the information needed to plan your tranquil getaway.

Tahkenitch Landing Campground is conveniently located at 79835 US-101, Gardiner, OR 97441, USA. This prime location places it directly along Oregon's iconic Highway 101, making it easily accessible for residents traveling from various parts of the state. It sits on the eastern side of Highway 101, directly on the shores of Tahkenitch Lake, approximately 9 miles north of Reedsport and 13 miles south of Florence.

For Oregonians driving down the coast, whether from the Portland area, Salem, or Eugene, simply follow Highway 101. The campground entrance is clearly marked, typically on the east side of the highway as you approach. This straightforward access eliminates the need for navigating complex backroads, ensuring a smooth journey to your lakeside retreat. The proximity to Highway 101, while offering easy access, means some sites might experience road noise; however, the overall feedback points to a generally peaceful environment, especially for sites further into the campground or those overlooking the lake. Its location within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area also means that other regional attractions and outdoor opportunities are just a short drive away, allowing for a diverse range of activities during your stay.

Services Offered:

  • Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets are available on-site for camper convenience. While some proximity to outhouses might lead to odors, the overall cleanliness is generally appreciated.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, perfect for outdoor cooking and enjoying campfires (always check for current fire restrictions).
  • Boat Ramp: A boat ramp is provided, offering direct access to Tahkenitch Lake for boating, paddling, and fishing.
  • No Potable Water: Campers should note that no drinking water is available at the campground. It is essential to bring a sufficient amount of water for all drinking and washing needs.
  • No Hookups: Tahkenitch Landing is a dry camping campground, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual campsites.
  • Day-Use Picnic Area: In addition to the campsites, there is a day-use picnic area available for visitors.

Features / Highlights:

  • Lakeside Setting: The campground is beautifully situated on the shores of Tahkenitch Lake, offering picturesque views and direct water access.
  • Fantastic Paddling: Tahkenitch Lake is ideal for non-motorized boating activities like kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, allowing for peaceful exploration of the lake's fingers.
  • Excellent Fishing: The lake is known for its fishing opportunities, with bass, trout (cutthroat and steelhead), yellow perch, and even a unique opportunity for wild coho salmon in season.
  • Hiking Trails to the Pacific Ocean: Nearby hiking trails, such as the Tahkenitch Dunes Trail, weave through a conifer forest and across open dunes, leading to a beach along the Pacific Ocean.
  • Wildlife Observation: The area is rich in wildlife, offering opportunities for bird watching (including snowy plovers), and spotting elk, pelicans, sea lions, and bald eagles.
  • Reduced Number of Sites, Larger Group Capability: Recent changes have seen smaller sites combined, creating larger, more accommodating spaces for small groups, even though there are no dedicated group campgrounds nearby. This may lead to a bit more noise but allows for more communal camping.
  • Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Access: While Tahkenitch Landing itself is closed to OHV use, nearby off-road vehicle trails at South Jetty offer hours of fun for off-road enthusiasts.
  • Forested and Shaded Campsites: The campground is hugged by coastal trees and shrubbery, including mixed pine and cedar, providing natural shade and a sense of seclusion.
  • Small RV / Tent Friendly: While some larger RVs might find sites tight (accommodates up to 40 ft, but realistically better for 32 ft or smaller), many sites are well-suited for tent camping and smaller campers.
