4.0
We were there July 2024. Beautiful area, but very hard to get to (10 miles of unpaved road is the only way to get there). Thought this would keep out noisy crowds but multiple gigantic groups of people packed in on Friday night and blasted music until 12:30 am. So, the party people have discovered this lake. Host was nice but did nothing to enforce the quiet hours. I am all for people enjoying themselves, but I also prefer some peace and quiet at some point. If you want quiet camping, this is not the place. Lake levels are so low that there is no good day use swimming access. As of our trip, water had NOT been cleared to drink. So plan on bringing water to drink. That said, we got there on a Tuesday and NO ONE was there. Kid got to scoot around on the nice flat camp road. So that part was nice! I would recommend to go during the week and to drive a few miles from the store to a swimming hole on the Eel River. - Jordan Heinze

Sunset Campground is situated at Simmons Rd, Potter Valley, CA 95469, USA. This address places it within a beautiful, albeit somewhat remote, part of California, offering a genuine escape from urban environments. The journey to Sunset Campground is an integral part of the experience, characterized by its approach along an unpaved road. Visitors should be prepared for approximately 10 miles of unpaved road as the sole access point to the campground. This particular aspect of accessibility is a significant consideration for potential campers. While it might deter some, it also contributes to the campground's rustic appeal and can help filter out casual visitors, preserving a certain level of natural integrity.

Navigating these unpaved roads typically requires a vehicle capable of handling such conditions. While not explicitly stated as requiring four-wheel drive, a vehicle with good ground clearance is generally advisable for comfort and ease of travel on unpaved surfaces. The remote nature of the access also means that it’s wise to ensure your vehicle is in good working order before embarking on the final stretch of your journey. Despite the challenging access, the reward is a location that feels truly secluded, offering a deeper immersion into the Californian wilderness. This journey is a testament to the fact that some of the most beautiful places require a little extra effort to reach, making the destination all the more rewarding for those who seek out such experiences. It's recommended to plan your travel during daylight hours, especially for your first visit, to better navigate the unpaved sections of the road.

Sunset Campground offers a range of essential services aimed at providing a comfortable, albeit rustic, camping experience. It's important to note that while some amenities are available, the focus here is on fundamental provisions rather than luxury.

  • Portable Water: A significant advantage at Sunset Campground is the availability of portable water. While a previous review indicated that water had not been cleared for drinking during their visit, the general presence of portable water hookups or sources is a definite plus for campers, reducing the need to transport large quantities of water for non-drinking purposes like washing and basic hygiene. Visitors should always confirm the potability of water upon arrival or bring their own drinking water as a precaution.
  • Bathrooms: The campground provides bathroom facilities, which are a welcome convenience for most campers. While showers are not available, the presence of restrooms greatly enhances the comfort level, particularly for families and those planning longer stays.
  • Inexpensive Sites: At just $16 per night (as per past reviews), Sunset Campground offers a highly affordable camping option. This makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious travelers seeking an extended stay in a natural setting.
  • First-Come, First-Serve: This operational model means there are no reservations taken. Campers secure a site upon arrival. While this adds an element of spontaneity and flexibility, it also means that during peak seasons or weekends, it's advisable to arrive earlier in the day to ensure you can secure a spot.
  • Boat Launch: For those interested in water activities, the close proximity to a lake with a boat launch is a significant service. This allows for easy access to the water for boating, fishing, and other aquatic recreation.
  • Daily Fire Truck Checks: A unique and reassuring service is the daily route taken by a fire truck to ensure campfires are attended. This measure speaks to the campground's commitment to safety and fire prevention, providing peace of mind for campers.

These services collectively contribute to Sunset Campground's appeal as a clean, accessible, and well-maintained rustic camping destination, providing the basic necessities for an enjoyable outdoor stay.

Sunset Campground boasts several features and highlights that contribute to its distinctive character and appeal, drawing a specific type of camper looking for a particular experience.

  • Beautiful Area: Despite the challenging access, the natural surroundings of Sunset Campground are consistently praised for their beauty. This includes the scenic lake, the surrounding landscape, and the overall peaceful ambiance, especially during less crowded times.
  • Very Nice Sites: Campers often commend the quality of the individual campsites. Described as "very nice sites," this suggests they are well-maintained, offer adequate space, and provide a pleasant setting for pitching tents or parking RVs (if suitable for the access road).
  • Lake Close with Boat Launch: The proximity of the lake is a major draw. Having a boat launch nearby means immediate access for water sports, fishing, and general enjoyment of the lake, making it ideal for those who prioritize water activities.
  • Good Bass and Huge Bluegill Fishing: For anglers, this is a significant highlight. The lake is noted for its good bass fishing and the presence of "huge bluegill," promising a rewarding fishing experience for both seasoned and casual fishermen.
  • Elk Rut Experience: A truly unique natural phenomenon at Sunset Campground is the presence of elk during their rutting season. The "call and a magnetic pull" described by a past visitor suggests an immersive wildlife experience that leaves a lasting impression, adding a layer of wild beauty to the stay.
