Sterling Canyon Campground is strategically located in Maricopa, CA 93252, USA, within the broader area of Gorman. Gorman is a small community situated in northern Los Angeles County, near the Tehachapi Mountains and the Tejon Pass. This positioning makes Sterling Canyon Campground exceptionally accessible for a vast number of Californians. For residents of the Greater Los Angeles area, Ventura County, and even parts of the Central Valley, the campground is a relatively short and straightforward drive, primarily via Interstate 5 (I-5).
Visitors traveling north on I-5 will typically take the Gorman exit, from which the campground is easily navigable. The proximity to a major interstate highway ensures that the journey to Sterling Canyon is convenient, even for those towing trailers with off-road vehicles. While the mailing address is Maricopa, CA, the campground is colloquially and functionally understood to be in the Gorman area, a well-known hub for off-road recreation in Southern California. This geographical context is crucial for local users familiar with popular riding spots.
The accessibility is a significant advantage, allowing Californians to maximize their time enjoying the outdoors rather than spending hours on the road. Despite its ease of access, the campground still manages to provide a sense of being 'away from it all,' nestled within the expansive landscapes that define this part of Kern County and northern Los Angeles County. This balance of convenience and escapism is a key factor in its popularity among local off-road enthusiasts and campers.
Sterling Canyon Campground provides essential services designed to cater to the needs of campers, particularly those engaging in off-road activities. While the focus is on a more rugged outdoor experience, key amenities are available to ensure a comfortable stay.
- Toilets: The campground is equipped with toilet facilities, which, as customer reviews indicate, are generally maintained and kept clean for visitor use. While not flush toilets, these are a welcome convenience in an off-road environment.
- Fire Pits: Individual campsites are provided with fire pits, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires, perfect for cooking or simply gathering around for warmth and camaraderie (always check for current fire restrictions and burn bans, which are common in California's drier seasons).
- Campsites: Dedicated areas for setting up tents and parking RVs/trailers are available, offering a base for your off-road adventures.
It is important to note, as highlighted by a customer review, that water is not typically available at the campsites. Campers are advised to "bring water" for all their needs, including drinking, cooking, and washing. Similarly, "your own toilet paper" is recommended, despite the presence of toilets, as supplies can sometimes be intermittent in more remote camping areas. These considerations are common for this type of off-road-focused campground and are easily managed with proper preparation.
Sterling Canyon Campground offers several distinctive features and highlights that make it a premier destination for a specific type of outdoor enthusiast in California.
- Off-Road Paradise: As per customer reviews, Sterling Canyon is situated within "one of the last legal off-road paradise left in Southern California." This is the standout feature, providing extensive legal trails and open areas for ATVs, dirt bikes, and other off-road vehicles. This makes it an unparalleled destination for those passionate about motorsports in a natural setting.
- Expansive Riding Opportunities: The vastness of the surrounding terrain allows for diverse riding experiences, catering to various skill levels, from beginners to experienced riders. This ensures that every member of an off-roading family can find trails suited to their abilities.
- Family-Friendly Off-Roading: Reviews emphasize it as a "great place to get away with the family and have fun riding 4 wheels and off roading cars." This highlights its suitability for family outings where off-roading is the main activity, fostering shared experiences and creating lasting memories.
- Clean Restrooms: Despite being a more rugged, off-road oriented campground, visitors consistently praise the cleanliness of the "bathrooms." This attention to basic hygiene significantly enhances the overall camping experience.
- Fire Pits for Evening Enjoyment: The availability of fire pits at each site allows campers to enjoy traditional campfire activities, providing a focal point for evening gatherings, storytelling, and relaxation after a day of riding.
- Accessible Location: Its proximity to major roadways (I-5) makes it easy for Californians to access, minimizing travel time and maximizing recreational time.
- Stargazing Opportunities: Away from major city lights, the open skies of Gorman offer excellent opportunities for stargazing, providing a peaceful contrast to the daytime off-road excitement.
These features collectively make Sterling Canyon Campground a highly attractive and functional destination for the off-road community and families seeking an active outdoor getaway in Southern California.

It's Gorman. One of the last legal off-road paradise left in Southern California. This particular camp has toilets. I just wish it also had water. Bring water and your own toilet paper. There's also fire pits.

Jun 14, 2017 · Duane Beightel (DirtbikeDuane)There's just one problem with this campground google .......this isn't Sterling campground. This is the one campground that you can rent for the weekend and it's hella cool . So if you don't want to be bothered by the peasants and who does LOVEE . Then you can go right across the road from Sterling and have your own campgrounds all to yourself it has its own bathrooms it's inclosed with a fence and locks and it has all the free beer and women of questionable backgrounds that you'll ever want.........ok , so it doesn't have free beer but it should , who's with me .....cricket.....cricket...Now sterling the campground in question is basically the campground us peasants stay at and watch all the elitist who are having a way better time than we and that way we can all think back to when we obviously made some really bad decisions and are now paying the price by being a LOSERRRRRR. One good thing about sterling is it is right in the middle of the winds that come through from time to time so instead of the renters getting blown away you'll be the ones who are choking on all the dirt and I'm sure they appreciate that very much or think that's your responsibility or whatever.....sterling is ok but there are way cooler campsites that I would choose. Besides I don't need to be reminded of my screwups my wife reminds me every day almost on a hourly basis which can be very helpful......if your into........people um......helping......me. I mean u. Ok gotta go the old b......my wife's calling and I'm sure it's gonna be some more HELPFUL ADVICE.
Oct 01, 2022 · Dino JohnsonHadn't been there in years. Very crowded and many careless riders going to fast in the pit area and slow zones. Be aware out the people, so we can all be safe AND have fun!
