Steamboat Hill Campground is worth choosing for several key reasons, especially for those in Illinois who are seeking a truly authentic and peaceful camping experience. The primary reason is its primitive and natural setting. In a world of large, full-service RV parks, Steamboat Hill offers a refreshing step back in time. It's the perfect place for tent campers, backpackers, or those with small trailers who are looking for a quiet and beautiful place to camp without the distractions of extensive amenities, loud music, or packed sites. The "self-serve" nature of the campground means you can arrive, find a spot, and simply enjoy the tranquility without a lot of check-in fuss. This independence is a significant draw for many outdoor enthusiasts.
The scenic location is another major selling point. The view from the hill is a true highlight, as noted in a public review, and it provides a memorable backdrop for your camping trip. For photographers, artists, or anyone who simply appreciates natural beauty, this is a prime location. The fact that the site is noted as "Good for kids" also makes it a viable option for families who want to introduce their children to a simpler style of camping. This back-to-basics approach can teach valuable lessons about self-reliance and environmental responsibility. While recent public data notes the campground was closed for upgrades, the fact that it is now "open again" (as of a March 2024 update) is a positive sign that authorities are committed to maintaining and improving the site for future generations of campers. For a genuine, peaceful, and scenic getaway in southern Illinois, Steamboat Hill Campground is an excellent choice that promises a real taste of the wilderness.
