For many, it's a cherished tradition, a place where "fun times are spent at the cabins" and where the focus is squarely on enjoying the natural surroundings. This is a place for those who appreciate the tranquility of the Vermont countryside, the thrill of casting a line, and the simple pleasure of unwinding by the water. If your family looks forward to yearly fishing and relaxing escapes, Sportsman Campground and Cottages aims to provide that familiar, welcoming setting for your next Vermont adventure.
Sportsman Campground and Cottages is strategically located at 6640 Vermont Rte 125, Addison, VT 05491, USA. This address places it in the rural and picturesque town of Addison, Vermont, a region known for its agricultural landscapes and, crucially, its close proximity to the vast expanse of Lake Champlain. The campground's position provides excellent access to the lake, which is a major draw for fishing and other water-based activities.
For Vermont residents, the campground is reasonably accessible from various parts of the state. From Burlington, Vermont's largest city, the drive is typically around 45 minutes to an hour south, offering a convenient weekend getaway. From Montpelier, the state capital, the journey is approximately an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half. Even from southern Vermont, such as Brattleboro, the drive is manageable, usually around two to two and a half hours, involving scenic routes through the heart of the state.
Route 125 (also known as Lake Street in some sections) is a state highway that offers direct access to the campground, ensuring a straightforward drive. Its location in Addison places it within easy reach of Lake Champlain's numerous boat launches, fishing spots, and scenic viewpoints. While the immediate surroundings are rural and peaceful, you're not far from local services in nearby towns. This balance of natural seclusion and practical accessibility makes Sportsman Campground and Cottages an attractive option for Vermonters seeking a genuine outdoor experience without venturing too far from home.
Sportsman Campground and Cottages aims to provide essential services to facilitate a fishing and relaxation-focused camping experience. While the overall emphasis is on a more rustic and traditional feel, key amenities are available to support guests' stays:
- Accommodation Options:
- Cottage Rentals: The campground offers cottages, which are a popular choice for families who enjoy returning year after year. These provide a more solid structure than tents, offering a base for extended stays. It's important to set expectations for a rustic cabin experience; they are designed for the outdoor enthusiast who prioritizes proximity to fishing and a relaxed atmosphere over modern luxuries.
- Camping Sites: While not explicitly detailed, the "Campground" in the name suggests the availability of sites for tents or potentially smaller RVs. Given the focus on outdoor activities like fishing, these sites would likely provide a basic setup for traditional camping.
- Fishing Access & Related Services:
- Access to Fishing Grounds: A primary service is its direct or very close access to prime fishing locations on Lake Champlain, allowing guests to easily pursue their passion for fishing.
- Boat Access: While not explicitly stated as an on-site launch, the nature of a "Sportsman" camp implies provisions or close proximity to where boats can be launched for fishing excursions.
- Basic Utilities (for Cottages):
- For cottages, basic utilities like electricity would be expected, providing lighting and power for small appliances. The mention of "smell" and "in shambles" in one review suggests that campers should clarify the current condition and specific amenities of their chosen cottage directly with management upon booking or arrival.
- Relaxation-Focused Environment: The campground explicitly offers a setting conducive to "relaxing each year," suggesting a peaceful and quiet atmosphere where guests can unwind around campfires or simply enjoy the natural surroundings.
Prospective visitors, especially those considering cottage rentals, are highly encouraged to contact the campground directly to inquire about the specific condition and amenities of the cottages, and to clarify what is provided (e.g., linens, cooking utensils, potable water access) to ensure their expectations align with the rustic nature of the accommodations.
The key features and highlights of Sportsman Campground and Cottages revolve around its core appeal: a dedicated environment for fishing enthusiasts and families seeking a relaxed, nature-centric getaway in Vermont. While it maintains a rustic charm, its strengths lie in its natural offerings and the traditional camping experience it provides:
- Prime Fishing Location: This is the absolute paramount feature. Being located in Addison with direct access to or very close proximity to Lake Champlain means unparalleled opportunities for fishing. Lake Champlain is renowned for its diverse fish population, including bass, pike, salmon, and trout, making it a dream destination for anglers. Guests specifically "look forward to the fishing each year."
- Lakeside or Near-Lakeside Setting: While not explicitly stated as on the lake, its location in Addison strongly implies a very close relationship to Lake Champlain, offering scenic views and easy access to the water for various activities beyond fishing, such as boating or simply enjoying the tranquil waterside.
- Relaxing Atmosphere: The campground prides itself on providing a space for "relaxing." This suggests a quiet, peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle, allowing campers to truly unwind, enjoy nature, and spend quality time with family and friends around a campfire.
- Family-Oriented Tradition: The consistent return of families year after year highlights a strong, welcoming, and family-friendly atmosphere. It's a place where multi-generational memories are made, fostered by shared experiences like fishing and simple outdoor living.
- Rustic Charm of Cottages: For those who prefer a solid roof over their head, the cottages offer a rustic lodging option. While it's important for visitors to manage their expectations regarding modern amenities (as some reviews indicate a very traditional, no-frills cabin experience), for many, this rustic charm is precisely part of the appeal, providing a more authentic "camp" feel rather than a hotel-like stay. They offer a comfortable base for outdoor adventures.
- Opportunity for "Fun Times": Reviews consistently mention "fun times," which, in the context of a fishing and relaxation camp, likely includes enjoying campfires, outdoor cooking, friendly competition in fishing, and simply being together in a natural setting.
- Secluded Vermont Setting: Located in rural Addison, the campground offers a genuine escape into the Vermont countryside, providing a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature that is highly valued by those seeking a break from urban environments.
It is important for prospective visitors, particularly regarding the cottages, to contact the management directly to inquire about the current condition and specific amenities of their chosen rental, ensuring it meets their expectations for a "rustic" experience. This proactive step helps guarantee a positive stay tailored to individual preferences.
As a private campground, Sportsman Campground and Cottages typically manages its pricing directly, which means specific, widely advertised "promotions" might be less common than with larger resort chains. However, there are inherent ways to experience value and potential savings:
- Value for Multi-Day Stays: Campgrounds and cottage rentals often offer more economical nightly rates for longer durations (e.g., weekly or monthly bookings) compared to single-night stays. This would be a likely "promotion" for those planning an extended fishing trip or family vacation. Visitors should inquire directly about such potential savings.
- Off-Peak Season Rates: During the shoulder seasons (e.g., late spring before peak summer, or early fall after Labor Day), campgrounds often have lower demand and may offer more competitive rates or greater availability. This is an excellent time for those seeking a quieter experience or potential savings.
- Group Booking Incentives: For fishing groups or large family gatherings, it might be possible to negotiate a favorable rate for booking multiple cottages or campsites, though this would need to be discussed directly with the management.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Our whole family loves coming here. We look forward to the fishing and relaxing each year. A lot of fun times spent here at the cabins at Sportsman Cottages.
June 04 · Karyn McGrathUnloaded our gear, turned around and loaded it right back into the truck. These cottages are not fit for rental. They are falling apart and dirty. They smell and are in shambles. Heed the the review and stay away
May 09 · JoshVery outdated. Things held together by duct tape and glue. Very unprofessional staff who are rude and not personable. The location is gorgeous, as it is directly on Lake Champlain, but also right on a relatively busy road. Dirty beds, windows and appliances. I would NOT recommend staying here to a rat.
September 19 · Ali DThis is our fourth year at Sportsman and we continue to enjoy our time there. The owners welcomed us and our family and friends. Our site is awesome, reasonably priced, the pool is so great on hot days and our fellow campers are friendly and fun! Met some great folks who stayed in the cabins too!!! The campground is on the lake and the public boat launch is within .5 miles from the campground entrance. We couldn’t be happier with our experience to date, and have several new friends who have joined us!!! So great to pull in to a campground FULL of happy campers waving as we enter. Looking forward to many more years of fun, boating and friends. Thanks Dave, Penny, (And chief of security-Diz!😉).
August 10 · Robin FrasierMy in-laws have had a camp here for many many years. It’s a great location central to Burlington, lake placid and Lake George. Beautiful pool with gorgeous views. Owners are like family can’t imagine going anywhere else and getting treated so well!! Love you guys !!
