Location and Accessibility
Spillway Campground is situated in a prime location for Arizonans looking to get into the high country. Its address is Forest Service Rd 105, Payson, AZ 85541, USA. This places it within the Tonto National Forest, a vast and beautiful area known for its diverse landscapes and recreational opportunities. The drive to the campground takes you through scenic Arizona highways, transitioning from the desert floor to the pine forests of the Mogollon Rim.
For those traveling from the Phoenix metropolitan area, the journey is relatively straightforward. You'll take State Route 87 (Beeline Highway) north towards Payson. From Payson, you'll follow well-marked forest roads that lead you directly to the campground. While the roads are generally well-maintained, it's always wise to check road conditions, especially during the monsoon season or in late spring when some higher-elevation roads might still be affected by snow.
Once you arrive, you'll find that the campground is designed to be accessible. A wheelchair-accessible parking lot is available, ensuring that it can be enjoyed by a wider range of visitors. The on-site parking is convenient, allowing you to easily unload your gear and set up your campsite. The proximity to the lake, coupled with the surrounding forest, makes for an idyllic setting that feels both remote and easily reachable.
The location offers a gateway to some of Arizona's most cherished natural attractions. The Mogollon Rim, a dramatic geological feature that stretches across central Arizona, is just a stone's throw away, offering countless opportunities for scenic drives and overlooks. The Payson area itself is known for its small-town charm and friendly atmosphere, making it a great base camp for exploring the region.
The remote, yet accessible, nature of Spillway Campground is a significant part of its appeal. It's close enough to major population centers to be a practical weekend destination but far enough away to provide a genuine sense of escape. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a gorgeous campground right on the lake. Donna & Doug are amazing camp hosts. It's very well kept and one of the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground. The views are stunning and the air is fresh. Lots of chipmunks, squirrels and birds. The lake was gorgeous to paddleboard on. Lots of fish jumping. Great hiking trails. We absolutely loved our stay & will be back!!
August 31 · Kayle O.I have a love hate relationship with this campground. If you can get the higher number sites on the side of the water, its perfect. You can actually see the water from your site. Even do a little night fishing. However, if you can't get one of those sites, I wouldn't waste my time. The reason I say that is the sites are very close together. Closer than any other campground up their. So if you can't be on the water side of the campground I personally rather camp somewhere else. But if you can get the side of the water its fantastic.
June 24 · Brandon McCaslinI absolutely love it out here. It's so peaceful and quiet. This is a great to go area. They have a self pay. You pick a spot and fill out a paper and pay for the nights you'll stay. I paid $29 a night which isn't bad. They have a bunch, a fire pit and a grill in everything spot. There are two restroom on in the front by the dumpster and one in the back of the site. They only have one toilet. It's not the best. Bring your own toilet paper. The lake is very nice. I fished off the edge for two days to get the feel of the fish. The last day I rented a boat. It was $90 for 4 hour. It's a great time. Dog friendly
October 22 · Cynthia LeyvasBeautiful lake with 26 camp sites with vault toilets and potable water available. No electricity, no sewer. We loved our stay here at Spillway Campground.
February 20 · Brandi OldakerGreat place to go camping. My kids had a blast and enjoyed the campgrounds. Campgrounds said it was full, but spoke to the host and had one spot left for the night. Temperatures are cooler than Payson and they due run out of firewood at the campground store, I recommend bringing your own firewood. Clean campground, the bathrooms are vault style bathrooms. Campers are pretty friendly and helpful since it was our first time camping. Firepits, grills and picnic tables at each site are available.
