One of my family’s favorite places on Earth! So serene, such abundant wildlife and ever so very peaceful. Bears 🐻 do live there, as do deer and fox, elk and 🫎 moose. If you’re lucky you’ll see a few. We’ve stayed in tents and stayed in an RV. Both are great! Some things to think about if it’s not an area you’re familiar with. There’s no running water, pit toilets provided. Keep all “smelly” things locked away, such as perfumes and all types of food. Never go to sleep in a tent with food. Critters can smell VERY WELL! We just kept those things in the car or trunk.(All food in the trunk.) Excellent place to disconnect and actually TALK to your family! We loved watching the sunrise Down the mountain and sunset Up the mountain!! ⛰️ We hiked trails, did some fishing 🎣 in the creek, and warmed up next to lovely campfires 🔥. We usually go in July or August when the Texas heat is just too much. Therefore, it can be a bit of a shock to awake to 30 degree F mornings!! Just make sure to pack some warm clothing and good hiking boots. If you’re a true “camper” it’s one of the very best hidden gems in the USA. If you need hot showers and flush toilets… I recommend a hotel in Gunnison. They have lovely places to choose from! - Leda Ketelhohn

Soap Creek Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals who truly embrace the spirit of rugged outdoor adventure and seek an escape from the everyday, Soap Creek Campground near Gunnison offers a uniquely serene and immersive experience. This isn't a bustling resort-style campground; instead, it's celebrated as a "hidden gem" for those who appreciate peace, abundant wildlife, and the chance to truly disconnect. Nestled in a stunning natural landscape, Soap Creek Campground provides an authentic camping environment, perfect for both tent campers and RVs seeking a more traditional, off-grid experience.

What makes Soap Creek Campground particularly special for Coloradans is its emphasis on natural beauty and tranquility. It's a place where the sounds of the creek and the rustling leaves replace city noise, and the clear Colorado sky transforms into an unparalleled celestial display at night. Reviews consistently highlight the profound sense of peace and the opportunities for wildlife viewing, making it a favorite for families looking to reconnect without the distractions of modern life. If your idea of a perfect getaway involves waking up to breathtaking mountain sunrises, spending days hiking and fishing, and nights gathered around a crackling campfire under a blanket of stars, then Soap Creek Campground is calling your name. It's a testament to the wild, beautiful heart of Colorado, offering an unforgettable experience for those willing to embrace a more unplugged adventure.

Soap Creek Campground is located on Co Rd 721E, Gunnison, CO 81230, USA. This address places it within the vast and scenic Gunnison National Forest, offering a truly immersive wilderness experience. Its position is behind a reservoir and alongside a charming creek, providing a picturesque and tranquil setting.

Accessing Soap Creek Campground is part of its adventurous appeal. From Gunnison, you typically travel west on Highway 50 for approximately 26 miles to the intersection with Highway 92 at the Blue Mesa Dam. From there, you turn onto Highway 92 and travel north for about 1.5 miles to its intersection with Soap Creek Road (FSR #721). You then follow FSR #721 for approximately 7.25 miles. It's important to note that while the initial miles of FSR #721 are generally passable for two-wheel drive vehicles and RVs, the road can be unpaved and a bit rough, particularly after rain, which might make it challenging for some larger RVs. This aspect contributes to the campground's serene and less-trafficked nature. The relative remoteness means cell service can be spotty or non-existent, making it an ideal spot to truly disconnect. Despite the journey, the reward of peaceful solitude and stunning natural beauty makes the trip worthwhile for those seeking a genuine Colorado wilderness experience.

Soap Creek Campground offers a rustic yet functional set of services, emphasizing a traditional camping experience where nature takes center stage. Visitors should come prepared for an authentic outdoor adventure, as modern conveniences are intentionally minimal to preserve the natural environment.

  • Pit Toilets: The campground provides well-maintained pit toilets (also known as vault toilets) for restroom facilities. These are described by visitors as "spotless" and "clean," ensuring a basic but hygienic solution in the absence of running water facilities.
  • No Running Water: It is crucial to note that Soap Creek Campground does not have running water at individual sites or centralized spigots. Campers must bring all their own potable water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Some sources indicate a hand pump may be available seasonally, but it's always best to be self-sufficient.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is generally equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
  • Fire Rings: Designated fire rings are available at each site, allowing for safe and enjoyable campfires, perfect for warming up on chilly mountain mornings or cooking meals.
  • Food Storage Guidelines: Due to the presence of abundant wildlife, including bears, deer, fox, elk, and moose, strict food storage practices are essential. Campers are advised to keep all "smelly" items, including food, perfumes, and toiletries, securely locked away in a car or trunk to prevent attracting animals.
  • No Hookups: For RV campers, there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, reinforcing the primitive and off-grid nature of the campground.
  • First-Come, First-Served: Many sources indicate that Soap Creek Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not typically accepted. This requires flexibility in travel plans, especially during peak seasons.

Soap Creek Campground is rich in features and highlights that make it a truly unique and cherished destination for those who love the wilder side of Colorado's outdoors.

  • Abundant Wildlife: A top highlight is the "abundant wildlife," with visitors regularly spotting deer, fox, elk, and moose. The presence of bears means strict food storage is necessary, but it also speaks to the rich ecosystem and the opportunity for incredible nature observation.
  • Profound Serenity and Peacefulness: The campground offers an incredibly "serene" and "peaceful" atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to "disconnect and actually TALK to your family" away from modern distractions. This tranquility is a major draw for those seeking true relaxation.
