Smokey Water Campground Introduce
For Tennessee locals seeking a fresh and inviting destination for their RV adventures, Smokey Water Campground in Rutledge presents a promising new option. Situated in the picturesque landscapes of East Tennessee, this developing campground offers a welcoming environment for both short-term getaways and extended stays. With its focus on providing comfortable RV sites and a commitment to expanding amenities, Smokey Water Campground is quickly becoming a go-to spot for those who appreciate beautiful views and a relaxed atmosphere near the stunning Cherokee Lake.
As a relatively new establishment, Smokey Water Campground is actively enhancing its offerings, promising an even richer experience for future visitors. Its friendly, professional approach aims to create a community feel, making it an excellent choice for Tennessee residents looking for a new home base for their outdoor explorations or simply a peaceful spot to unwind.
Smokey Water Campground is located at 435 Smokey Waters Way, Rutledge, TN 37861, USA. Rutledge is a charming town in Grainger County, Tennessee, known for its scenic rural beauty and its close proximity to Cherokee Lake. This location offers a strategic advantage for Tennessee locals, providing a convenient escape from urban areas without venturing too far from home.
The campground is nestled within picturesque farmland and boasts river frontage, contributing to its tranquil and scenic appeal. It's ideally situated just a short drive from major attractions, being within an hour's drive of both Pigeon Forge and the iconic Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Closer to hand, Gilmore Marina is conveniently located about a mile south, and a TVA public boat launch is even nearer, approximately a mile to the north, making it incredibly accessible for boating and fishing enthusiasts. While new, the campground features gravel pads for RVs, suggesting straightforward access for various rig sizes. However, one customer review noted that it might not be "big rig friendly" for exceptionally large fifth wheels (e.g., 45-foot) due to turns less than 90 degrees and obstacles near corners. Prospective campers with very large rigs are advised to inquire directly about site suitability.
Smokey Water Campground is developing its services to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay for its guests. While some amenities are currently available, the ownership is actively working on expanding its offerings. Current and planned services include:
- RV Sites with Gravel Pads: The campground provides designated RV sites featuring solid gravel pads, offering a stable and clean base for your vehicle.
- Full Hookups: Many, if not all, sites offer full hookups, which include water, sewer, and electrical connections (likely 30 and 50 amp options). This ensures a convenient and self-contained camping experience.
- Ample Yard Space: Each site is designed with "plenty of yard space," allowing for comfortable outdoor living, setting up chairs, and enjoying the surroundings.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: Pets are allowed at Smokey Water Campground, making it an excellent choice for Tennessee pet owners who wish to travel with their furry companions. Responsible pet ownership, including leashing and cleaning up after pets, is expected.
- Long-Term Stays: The campground caters to long-term and seasonal leases, indicating that it's designed for extended stays, providing a sense of community and stability for returning guests.
- Cabin Rentals: The owner is also building and renting cabins, offering an alternative accommodation option for those without an RV or for groups wanting a different kind of stay.
- Storage Rental Space: Storage rental space is available for boats and other recreational vehicles, a significant convenience for those looking to keep their equipment nearby.
- Future Amenities (Planned): The owner has indicated plans to add a swimming pool and laundry facilities soon, which will further enhance the comfort and convenience for campers.
It's important to note that a review mentioned that owners might not be on-site during winter months and credit cards are not accepted, so visitors should plan accordingly for payment methods, especially during off-season visits. The sewer drain may also require a rubber stopper type connection rather than a screw top.
Smokey Water Campground's appeal stems from its prime location and its ongoing commitment to creating a quality camping experience. Key features and highlights include:
- Beautiful Views: The campground boasts "beautiful views," likely encompassing the surrounding farmland, river, and potentially distant mountains, providing a serene backdrop for your stay.
- New and Developing: As a relatively "new campground," it offers fresh facilities and the excitement of future improvements, signaling a progressive approach to guest satisfaction.
- Proximity to Cherokee Lake: Located just moments from Cherokee Lake, it's an ideal spot for those interested in fishing, boating, and various water sports. The lake is known for its exceptional fishing.
- Convenient Local Amenities: Despite its natural setting, amenities like Gilmore Marina and a TVA public boat launch are very close. Dollar General is a 5-minute drive, and an IGA food store is about 20 minutes away for larger grocery needs.
- Gateway to East Tennessee Attractions: Within an hour's drive, campers can access the popular tourist destinations of Pigeon Forge and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering endless opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, and family entertainment.
- Spacious Sites: The "plenty of yard space" around each gravel pad provides comfort and room for campers to relax and enjoy their surroundings.
- Potential for Community: The focus on long-term rentals and the owner's presence (when on-site) suggest a friendly environment where campers can connect and enjoy a sense of community.

Smokey Water Campground Reviews
Nice, new campground. Gravel pads with plenty of yard space. Beautiful views. These are long term. The owner is building and renting cabins as well. He says he will begin adding a swimming pool and laundry soon. Pets allowed. Storage rental space available for boats and such as well.
Sep 09, 2023 · JoJo FoxNot big rig friendly (45’ fifth wheel), turns less than 90 degrees, back on an angle, power poles/signs close to the roads at the corners. Sites very unlevel, we had an 8 inch difference side to side, was able to move to a 5 inch difference, then sewer drain was greater than 30ft from the drain on the RV. Dogs allowed to wander the grounds all hours of the day/night barking. Sewer drain does not have the screw top on it, requires the rubber stopper type. Owners not on site during winter months, does not accept credit cards.
Dec 31, 2024 · Melissa RobinsonThey do not take weekend or stay for a week or two. You must stay forever. You also have to have a background check before you can even think of staying here.
May 31, 2025 · Susan SloneVery clean. Everyone is very polite. Always have something exciting going on at holidays, band, cookout, inflatables for kids. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a nice clean campground.
