Shorts Bar Recreation Site Introduce
For those of us who call Idaho home, the allure of a pristine riverside retreat is often at the top of our outdoor wish list. Shorts Bar Recreation Site, nestled along the magnificent Salmon River near Riggins, offers exactly that—a genuine Idaho experience where the roar of the river replaces city noise and stunning natural beauty surrounds you. This site provides a more rustic, yet incredibly rewarding, camping opportunity for locals seeking to immerse themselves in the Gem State's renowned wilderness. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect and embrace the tranquility of one of Idaho's most iconic waterways.
Shorts Bar Recreation Site is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s a gateway to incredible fishing, unparalleled river access, and spectacular scenery. While it offers a primitive camping experience, its charm lies in its untouched beauty and the sense of seclusion it provides. This makes it particularly appealing to those who appreciate simplicity and a direct connection with nature. Whether you're an avid angler, a rafting enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a peaceful riverside spot to unwind, Shorts Bar Recreation Site promises an unforgettable Idaho adventure. This article will delve into what makes this site a must-visit for local outdoor enthusiasts.
Shorts Bar Recreation Site boasts a prime location along the famous Salmon River, also known as "The River of No Return," near Riggins, ID 83549, USA. Its specific address, NF-1614, indicates its placement within the vast and beautiful Nez Perce National Forest, an area celebrated for its rugged landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities. For Idaho locals, its proximity to Riggins, often referred to as "the Whitewater Capital of Idaho," makes it a highly accessible yet wonderfully secluded destination.
Accessibility to Shorts Bar is relatively straightforward, primarily via well-maintained forest roads. From Riggins, travelers will typically head north or south on US-95, depending on their approach, before turning onto a designated forest road that leads to NF-1614. While the exact turns may vary, the general path involves following signage for forest roads that parallel the Salmon River. It's always advisable to consult a local map or use GPS coordinates in conjunction with a physical map, as cell service can be spotty in remote forest areas.
The site's location directly adjacent to the Salmon River is its most significant advantage, offering immediate access for fishing, launching rafts or kayaks, or simply enjoying the riverside atmosphere. This direct riverfront setting means you're just steps away from casting a line or enjoying the sounds of the flowing water. While it feels remote, its connection to a major highway via forest roads ensures that it’s not too difficult to reach for an adventurous weekend trip or a longer stay. This blend of wild beauty and reasonable access makes Shorts Bar Recreation Site an ideal choice for Idahoans seeking a genuine outdoor experience.
Shorts Bar Recreation Site offers a primitive camping experience, focusing on fundamental amenities to preserve the natural environment while providing essential services for campers. These services are designed for those who appreciate self-sufficiency and a minimalist approach to outdoor living.
Services offered include:
- Designated Campsites: While offering a rustic feel, the site provides designated areas for camping, ensuring a degree of organization and minimizing environmental impact.
- Vault Toilets: Basic vault or pit toilets are typically available for visitor convenience, contributing to sanitation without requiring complex infrastructure.
- River Access: The most prominent "service" is the direct and easy access to the Salmon River itself, ideal for fishing, launching non-motorized watercraft, or simply enjoying the riverside environment.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial for visitors to be aware that Shorts Bar Recreation Site does not typically provide potable (drinking) water. Campers must bring their own supply of water for all needs, including drinking, cooking, and washing.
- No Hookups: There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, making it primarily suitable for tent camping or self-contained RVs.
- Pack It In, Pack It Out: While trash receptacles might be limited or non-existent, the site often encourages a "pack it in, pack it out" policy, emphasizing personal responsibility for waste management.
The primitive nature of these services is part of the site's appeal for those seeking an authentic outdoor adventure, but it requires campers to be well-prepared and self-reliant, bringing all necessary supplies for their stay.
Shorts Bar Recreation Site boasts several features and highlights that make it a uniquely appealing destination for campers in Idaho, particularly those who appreciate a more undeveloped and nature-focused experience.
Features and Highlights:
- Riverside Location on the Salmon River: The primary highlight is its direct adjacency to the majestic Salmon River. This offers unparalleled access for fishing, swimming (at your own risk, as river currents can be strong), and simply enjoying the soothing sounds and views of one of Idaho's most famous rivers. A customer review noted, "Very nice campground next to the river."
- Secluded and Uncrowded Atmosphere: As indicated by a review stating, "No one there," the campground often provides a sense of solitude and peace, especially outside of peak seasons. This is a significant draw for those seeking to escape crowds and find true tranquility.
- Primitive Camping Experience: For those who prefer a less developed setting, Shorts Bar offers a genuine primitive camping experience. This means fewer amenities but a stronger connection to the natural environment, appealing to self-sufficient campers.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The Salmon River is renowned for its fishing, particularly for Steelhead, Chinook Salmon (seasonal, with strict regulations), and various trout species. The direct river access makes it an ideal spot for anglers.
- Wildlife Viewing: The remote, riparian environment is excellent for wildlife viewing. Deer, elk (as mentioned in a review, though some caution about biting flies related to penned elk is noted), various bird species, and other forest inhabitants are common sights.
- Scenic Beauty: Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Nez Perce National Forest, the site offers stunning views of the river canyon and the surrounding forested mountains, providing ample photographic opportunities.
- Easy Access (Relatively): Despite its secluded feel, the site is described as "easy to access" in a review, suggesting that the forest roads leading to it are generally manageable for most vehicles, especially compared to more challenging backcountry routes.
One customer review provided a useful caution: "Stayed on the bar upstream in mid August. The biting flies were horrible, hundreds of them swarming us and our camper. I assume this was from the penned elk that were across the road. The site is beautiful other than that and easy to access!" This highlights the importance of being prepared for insects, a common reality in many natural settings, but reaffirms the site's beauty and accessibility.

Shorts Bar Recreation Site is an ideal destination for locals in Idaho, offering a genuinely authentic outdoor experience that resonates with the adventurous spirit of the Gem State. For Idahoans, who often seek out less developed, more natural settings, this campground provides the perfect escape. The primitive nature of Shorts Bar is a feature, not a drawback, for many local outdoor enthusiasts. It encourages self-reliance and a deeper connection to nature, free from the distractions and crowds often found at more developed campgrounds. This makes it an excellent choice for a quiet weekend getaway, a focused fishing trip, or a basecamp for hunting in the surrounding Nez Perce National Forest. Aug 20, 2024 · Ben CorradoWell maintained restrooms. Nice swimming beach, and a smooth boat launch.
Jul 20, 2024 · Justin KelleyI just loved this place where I camped for free along the magnificent and dramatic Salmon River. I'll come back if in this area again.
Jun 21, 2021 · Sitabai BettsQuite a bit of open beach here for camping, fires ONLY allowed in firepans and the few developed pits. there is a table here and bathrooms as well. A great spot to launch your boats to hit a few extra waves before timezone. also decent fishing here and you will find lots of other campers during the busy times of the year. There is very little firewood available here. Other areas offer more beach access via vehicles.
