It’s a place where the simple joys of lakeside views and abundant wildlife sightings often take center stage, offering a distinct kind of getaway for those who appreciate the raw beauty of the outdoors.
Shoal Creek Campground has long been a known spot for those looking to set up camp near the expansive waters of Lake Lanier. The very essence of camping here revolves around the natural environment it provides. Imagine waking up to the sounds of the forest, with the shimmering lake just steps away. While campsite views can vary, many locations within the campground offer glimpses or even panoramic vistas of the lake, providing a picturesque setting for your outdoor adventures. The opportunity to be close to the water allows for various lake-based activities, making it an appealing option for those who enjoy boating, fishing, or simply relaxing by the shore.
One of the most consistently highlighted aspects of Shoal Creek Campground by visitors is the remarkable wildlife. It’s not uncommon to encounter deer gracefully roaming through the campsites, creating memorable moments for campers of all ages. For children, in particular, the chance to see these animals up close can be an incredibly exciting and educational experience, adding an extra layer of wonder to their camping trip. This abundance of natural fauna truly underscores the campground’s appeal as a haven for nature lovers and those looking to observe Georgia’s local wildlife in its natural habitat.
While the focus is often on the natural beauty and the joy of outdoor living, it’s also important to consider the practicalities of a camping experience. Shoal Creek, like many older campgrounds, has seen its share of wear and tear over the years. Visitors have noted that while the natural setting is undeniably appealing, some of the facilities, such as the bathrooms and showers, might reflect their age and could benefit from attention. This feedback is valuable for prospective campers, especially those who rely on public amenities, as it suggests that a self-contained RV might enhance the overall comfort of a stay at Shoal Creek.
However, for campers who prioritize being immersed in nature, value privacy, and are prepared for a more rustic experience, Shoal Creek offers distinct advantages. The spaciousness of the sites, combined with the presence of abundant wildlife and the scenic lake views, creates an authentic camping atmosphere. It’s a place where the simple pleasures of the outdoors can be truly appreciated, away from the more manicured or crowded environments found elsewhere. For many local Georgians, part of the appeal of camping is precisely this kind of unadorned, natural setting, where the focus remains squarely on the environment and the activities it enables.
The location in Buford also makes Shoal Creek accessible for a significant portion of Georgia’s population, particularly those living in the Atlanta metropolitan area and its northern suburbs. This ease of access means that a weekend getaway doesn’t require extensive travel, allowing more time to be spent enjoying the campground and its surroundings. For locals, having such a natural retreat close to home is a distinct advantage, providing an immediate escape from daily routines and a quick immersion into the tranquility of lakeside living.
In summary, Shoal Creek Campground, with its beautiful lake views and thriving wildlife, offers a quintessential Georgia camping experience. While it presents a more rustic environment, particularly concerning some of its facilities, its natural charm, spacious sites, and convenient location make it a viable option for those seeking a genuine outdoor adventure on Lake Lanier. It’s a place where the joy of seeing deer, the peace of a lakeside morning, and the simple act of camping in nature truly define the experience.

Shoal Creek Campground Reviews
Stayed at a tent site with lake view. We were close to the entrance, which was the only site available for the weekend. We explored the campground and some of the other sites have MUCH better lake views. Shower/bathrooms need some attention as they are not the cleanest. Saw lots of deer that my son thought was the coolest thing.
May 30, 2025 · Jason MAt some point many years ago, this campground was probably a great place to stay. Now, it is a run down campground in much need of repairs to almost every campsite and all the roads. Of particular note, if you do not have a self contained RV (one with a bathroom and shower) you will have to endure the nastiest bathrooms and showers I have ever encountered. There was no attempt by management to clean any of the 4 or 5 restrooms in the park. They were covered with bugs, cobwebs, mold and mildew on the walls, and luke warm water. My skin crawled each time I had to use the restrooms. The only positive things were some of the views of the lake and lots of animals running around.
Jun 22, 2025 · Rick SkinnerBest campground. Yesterday, despite the rain in the evening, the site dried up pretty quick. A wonderful view near water for more campgrounds. Spotted with a lot of deer.
Jun 28, 2025 · Pradeep SadhasivamI stayed at this campground for 2 weeks, and although the park and view of the lake were picturesque, the sites were very tight with little room for my truck. My biggest concern was the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Since there was no sewer hookup and I was on an extended trip, I took advantage of the shower room to minimize needing to dump my tanks during my stay. Over the first few days, the shower and bathroom overall was filthy, but since I checked in on a Sunday, I assumed they were dirty from the weekend and would be attended to during the week. Sadly, that was not the case. I don't believe they cleaned or had trash removed during my entire stay. The exterior lights to the bathroom were off at night, posing a safety concern. I'm glad I had a chance to check out the park, but I wouldn't return or recommend it to friends. Hopefully, Margaritaville will implement the necessary improvements and updates to return this park to its glory.
Mar 02, 2025 · Richard LittleIt was noisy during Easter weekend, but our campsite came with a nice private beach and kids enjoyed it the whole weekend. Sites are not very accessible, because of steep slope with old wooden stairs — all broken and barely holding together
