Shell Creek Campground Introduce
Nestled within the breathtaking beauty of the Bighorn National Forest, Shell Creek Campground near Greybull, Wyoming, is a pristine destination for campers seeking a true escape into the mountains. Named for the serene creek that runs alongside most of its sites, this campground offers a peaceful and picturesque setting that is a favorite among locals and repeat visitors. The combination of a high-elevation location, spacious campsites, and a crystal-clear creek creates an environment that is both invigorating and relaxing, making it an ideal spot for an extended stay.
What makes Shell Creek Campground so beloved is its authentic and well-maintained atmosphere. The camp hosts, like Dale and Loretta mentioned in a customer review, are consistently praised for their hard work and kindness. They go above and beyond to ensure the facilities are "very clean" and are always ready to "help you if you need any assistance." This level of personal care and attention to detail is a significant factor in the campground's reputation and why it feels like a welcoming community. The review from a happy camper who has been visiting for three consecutive years speaks volumes about the quality and consistency of the experience.
The campsites themselves are a major highlight. They are described as "spacious" and can "easily accommodate a large RV or large tent." The thoughtful layout ensures that most sites are located next to the creek, allowing campers to be lulled to sleep by the soothing sound of the running water. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, providing the essentials for a comfortable and classic camping experience. For those who prefer tent-only camping, there are dedicated sites to meet those needs as well. The presence of well-kept facilities, including clean public restrooms and running water, further enhances the comfort of your stay.
Shell Creek Campground is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The location offers a wealth of activities, from simple relaxation to more strenuous adventure. The creek itself is a draw for anglers, with brook trout eager to bite. As one review noted, even when the creek is running high, it's possible to find "fishing holes where the brook trout were eager to entertain." For hikers, the area is a gateway to diverse trails, with kid-friendly hikes that are perfect for families. The majestic scenery provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing, with sightings of moose, elk, and deer being a common and exciting occurrence.
The campground’s accessibility is another key feature. It is conveniently located just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14) and offers on-site parking, including a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and entrance. This commitment to accessibility ensures that a wide range of visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Bighorns. While the surrounding area can be busy, the campground itself is "well off the highway" and provides a "nice and quiet at night" experience, offering the perfect blend of convenient access and peaceful seclusion.
What is particularly special about this spot is its ability to offer a memorable experience in any weather. As one camper recounted, they experienced "all 4 seasons" during a Memorial Day weekend visit. This unpredictability is part of the charm of Wyoming's mountains and a reminder to always be prepared. The campground's dog-friendly policy is a testament to its welcoming nature, allowing campers to share the adventure with their beloved pets, as demonstrated by Belle the blue tick's love for Shell Creek. The atmosphere is one of relaxed freedom, with a continuous 14-day camping limit allowing for a true, long-term escape.
Ultimately, Shell Creek Campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent. It is a destination that captures the essence of Wyoming's natural beauty and outdoor spirit. The stunning views, the soothing sound of the creek, the clean facilities, and the friendly hosts all contribute to an experience that keeps campers coming back year after year. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great spot to escape into the Big Horns and enjoy up to 14 continuous days of camping. Most of the camping sites are next to the Creek, are spacious and easily accommodate a large RV or large tent. There are also a few tent only sites. The hosts keep the camp and it facilities very clean, are happy to help you if you need any assistance, and are fun to visit with when they aren't taking care of the campground. The Creek was well above it's normal flow levels when we visited, however, we were still able to find a few fishing holes where the brook trout were eager to entertain and give us and give us a nice addition to our campfire menu.
July 14 · mojovoyagerThird year in a row we visited shell creek campground over memorial day weekend. We stayed at site #13. People would pay more than $20 a day for the views and sounds from #13. We saw moose, elk and deer. Shell creek was running hard so no fishing. We experienced all 4 seasons. Hosts Dale and Loretta do a great job maintaining facilities. They were also very kind giving us 10 gallons of their water supply because usfs had not turned on any water in the area. Well behaved dogs are welcomed here. Keep them on leash in the campground. Belle the blue tick loves camping at shell creek.
May 31 · Sheldon BartelBeautiful campsite. Easy to get into with a 37 ft travel trailer. Just bring your starlink if you want a signal. Make sure your water tank is full and waste tanks are empty. There is no electricity or dump site. There are water spigots but not ones you can attach a hose to and fill your rv tank. After you unhook your rv you can drive to the ranger creek campsite just up the road, park and take a beautiful walk on the trail by the parking lot. Roads were in good condition when we were there at end of may 2025
June 04 · Erhan SimaviA beautiful site worth every bit of it. We literally pitched tent along the river woke up to elk calls and wonderful weather.
August 24 · Celesta JohnsonOne of my favorite campgrounds. This place is very remote, quiet, peaceful, and absolutly beautiful. The campground is right along a pretty tree line with Shell Creek running nearby. The creek is perfect for cooling off. Stargazing here is stunning. Sites are pretty well spaced out, and the campgroundis not very big. The host has self-service firewood avaliable. Site 007 and 008 are perfect for tents. We had site 006, which was nice as well, but lacked shade. Wasn't a problem for us, as we were out exploring most of the day. Would definitely camp here again.
