For many Alabamians, the call of the open road and the desire for a comfortable, convenient place to stay while exploring new areas are paramount. Whether you're traveling through the state, seeking a base for local adventures, or looking for an extended stay option, finding the right campground is key. Shady Acres Campground in Mobile, Alabama, presents itself as a practical and accessible choice for those who prioritize location and essential amenities over a resort-style experience.
Located in the vibrant city of Mobile, Shady Acres Campground offers a no-frills approach to camping, focusing on providing necessary services for RV and potentially tent campers. It caters especially to travelers passing through, seasonal workers, and those looking for an affordable base to explore Mobile's rich history and attractions, such as the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. This article aims to provide a clear and factual overview of Shady Acres Campground, detailing its location, the services it offers, and what makes it a suitable option for locals and visitors alike traveling through the beautiful state of Alabama.
Shady Acres Campground is situated at 2500 Old Military Rd, Mobile, AL 36605, USA. This address places it within the city limits of Mobile, Alabama, a strategic advantage for accessibility. Mobile is a major port city on the Gulf Coast, known for its historical significance, vibrant culture, and as a gateway to the beautiful Alabama beaches. The campground's location on Old Military Road provides relatively easy access from major roadways, making it convenient for travelers arriving from various directions within Alabama or from neighboring states.
Its proximity to downtown Mobile means campers have convenient access to local attractions, dining, and shopping without having to endure a long drive. For those visiting iconic sites like the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, Shady Acres offers a much closer lodging alternative than options further afield. While the immediate surroundings might not boast extensive natural landscapes, the campground's primary appeal lies in its practicality and ease of access to the city's amenities. For Alabamians planning a trip to Mobile, this location offers a balance between urban convenience and a designated space for their RV or camping setup.
Shady Acres Campground focuses on providing essential services to ensure a functional stay for its guests, particularly those in RVs. While it's important to set expectations that it's not a luxury resort, the campground does offer fundamental amenities:
Full Hookups: A significant advantage for RV campers, Shady Acres provides full hookups at its sites. This typically includes connections for electricity, water, and sewer, allowing RVs to operate with all their onboard conveniences. This feature is highly valued by travelers who rely on these utilities for comfortable living on the road.
Cable TV Access: Many sites at Shady Acres offer cable TV hookups. This amenity can be a welcome addition for guests looking to relax with entertainment after a day of exploring or for those on extended stays who appreciate having access to television programming.
Varied Site Sizes: The campground, being a former mobile home park, features sites that "vary drastically" in size. While some might be smaller, this variation suggests that there could be larger or more accommodating spots available for different RV configurations or camping setups. It's advisable to inquire about site specifics when booking.
Restroom/Bath House (with caveats): A common restroom facility is available for use. However, it's important to note that customer reviews indicate that the "Bath house needs an up date." Prospective users should manage their expectations regarding the condition of these common facilities. For many RVers with self-contained units, this may be less of a concern.
Community Atmosphere: While not a direct service, the campground is noted to have "lots of seasonal folks and people working." This often contributes to a quiet, established community feel, which can be appealing for those on extended stays or looking for a more stable environment than a transient overnight stop. "Everyone one is nice" is a positive indicator of the general atmosphere.
Shady Acres Campground offers several features that, while not always luxurious, provide practical benefits and define its unique character:
Practical Location for Mobile Exploration: Its primary highlight is its excellent location for exploring Mobile, AL. For visitors wanting to experience the USS Alabama, downtown Mobile's historic districts, or events, the campground provides a pragmatic base without the need for extensive daily commutes.
Affordable Pricing: At around $50/night (as per a review), Shady Acres is positioned as a budget-friendly option, especially when compared to more amenity-rich RV resorts. For travelers on a tighter budget or those needing a cost-effective extended stay, this pricing can be a significant advantage.
Full Hookup Convenience: The availability of full hookups (electric, water, sewer, and cable) at sites is a major convenience for RV owners, ensuring a self-sufficient and comfortable stay without constant trips to dump stations or limited power.
Established Clientele: The presence of "seasonal folks and people working" suggests a stable, perhaps quieter, environment than campgrounds with a high turnover of recreational tourists. This can be a benefit for those seeking a less bustling atmosphere.
No-Frills Approach: For campers who prefer a straightforward camping experience without the added costs or distractions of resort-style amenities like swimming pools, clubhouses, or extensive recreation programs, Shady Acres offers exactly that. It's a place to park, hook up, and explore the surrounding area.
Former Mobile Home Park Layout: This unique history means the sites are likely well-defined and spacious in some areas, potentially offering more room than a typical tightly packed RV park. However, it also explains the variance in site sizes and potentially the condition of some older infrastructure.

Shady Acres Campground Reviews
Stayed overnight on our trip from Texas in January. This campground is derelict, the "nature trail" is completely overgrown. We were given site 19, which is not on the map. It took us a while in the dark to find that our spot was a muddy patch at the entrance. For $50/night, this place was a joke. I wouldn't attempt to use the common restroom unless I wore a biohazard suit.
Aug 11, 2024 · Chris PerkoPlace isn't to bad, it was a former mobile home park. There are lots of seasonal folks and people working . Site size varies drastically. Bath house needs an up date. Full hook ups with cable, everyone one is nice , if you're expecting a RV resort feel it's probably not for you . We were only there two nights as the reason for the stay was to visit the USS Alabama, we would stay again.
Feb 27, 2025 · Russ NicholsYin and Yang. Light and dark. Chocolate and vanilla. Shady* Acres Campground and where we stayed last night. (*Shady everywhere except Slip 20, where we are unless we put out our awning, open an umbrella or throw ourselves under our bus)Nope, no shade here, except what I’m about to throw out on this place! Actually, as you can see in the pix, there’s lots of shade in the back 40 however these all appear to being term slips with the front couple of slips for one night stands.Fairly level and long gravel slips (easily accommodated our 55+ foot parade with room to spare). Full hookups including a rusty CATV wire that provided static on every channel found. 3-4 bars and the ubiquitous AT&T “5G” label which has provided steady steaming of TV (too lazy to deploy Dishy for one night stands) as well as 🏄.Given what we have seen from walking around, and the exterior of the office, we felt the laundry and bathrooms were better left unseen. Office was closed at 4 when we arrived so we don’t know about the internet-it looked like they have it but the reservation slip taped to the office door for us only had a bathroom code, no internet password. I think we paid $45, and it is supposedly a Good Sam site. We chose it because it was the only place with pull-thru sites in the Mobile area that had availability. I gave it a 3.5 out of 5.
Sep 17, 2022 · Doug ChasickNice small campground close to mobile. Several full time RVs that could use a bit of TLC. Truck across the street from us had flat tires and looks like it had been there for awhile.Staff super friendly and helpful staff = they want to “tidy” up however staffing is hard to find like everywhere these days. They have a small area for laundry and mail- we did not do laundry here so I can’t comment on that.We have a 41’ tow hauler and had lots of room to park with no tree issues. We walked our dog around the neighborhood and felt very safe - you do need to watch out for other animals though.
Mar 03, 2022 · Sheri LucasSmall quiet campground located in traditional neighborhood. Several full timers on site. Some sites needed to be cleaned up. Most spots are shaded. Other pictures are misleading, we could not locate water access. This campground does not back up to the river. Downtown Mobile is close.
