Scenic Acres Camp Ground

What started as a nice little campground, turned into a nightmare. There were so many earwigs that it literally kept me from sleeping. They numbered in the thousands in my tent. Bev tried to make us burn all our trash because she said she couldn't afford garbage pickup. We weren't told about her showers that she said she wasn't fixing. She wants to charge a buck per piece of wood. She rode down on her mower several mornings barking orders at us. The last 2 weeks we were there she refused us toilet paper. It was always so windy we simply could not do anything enjoyable outside. - Brad Hubert

Scenic Acres Camp Ground Introduce

For Minnesotans who truly appreciate a rustic, no-frills camping experience away from the bustling crowds, Scenic Acres Camp Ground in Winona offers a unique proposition. This is not a resort-style campground with abundant amenities, but rather a small, quiet, and economical spot nestled in the serene landscape of a wheat field. It caters to those who prioritize peace, privacy, and a back-to-basics approach to their outdoor adventures in Southeast Minnesota.

Scenic Acres Camp Ground provides a distinct alternative for locals looking to unplug and enjoy the simplicity of nature. While some aspects might require a certain level of adaptability and understanding, its core offering of quiet, affordable sites with basic hookups makes it an appealing option for budget-conscious campers or those seeking a minimalist escape. This campground embodies a more personal, hands-on approach to hospitality, which for the right kind of camper, can contribute to a truly memorable and authentic experience in the heart of Minnesota's bluff country.

Location and Accessibility

Scenic Acres Camp Ground is located at 42793 Kipp Dr, Winona, MN 55987, USA. This address places it just outside the city of Winona, within the picturesque landscape of Southeast Minnesota's bluff country, often referred to as the "Driftless Area" due to its unique geological formations untouched by glaciers.

The campground's setting in "the middle of a wheat field" suggests a rural, open environment, providing a sense of quiet seclusion. Despite this rural feel, its proximity to Winona ensures good accessibility for Minnesotans. Winona itself is a vibrant Mississippi River city, easily reachable from various parts of the state and beyond:

  • From Rochester: Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour via US-14 E.

  • From Minneapolis/St. Paul: Roughly 2.5 to 3 hours via US-52 S and US-61 S, making it a feasible weekend getaway.

  • From La Crosse, WI: Around 30 minutes via I-90 W and US-14 W.

Access to Scenic Acres Camp Ground would typically involve driving to the given address. While it's in a rural setting, its location near a state highway (though not directly on a major one) means reasonably easy navigation. Campers can enjoy the peace of being out in the open fields while still being a relatively short drive from Winona's amenities, including grocery stores, restaurants, and various attractions. This blend of remote tranquility and convenient access to town services makes it an appealing spot for campers who want to experience both.

Services Offered

Scenic Acres Camp Ground offers a set of basic, no-frills services, emphasizing a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience. It's important for potential campers to understand these limitations to ensure their expectations align with what's provided.

  • Limited Campsites with Basic Hookups: The campground reportedly has "only 4 campsites," making it a very small and intimate setting. Each campsite is equipped with water, electric, a picnic table, and a fire pit, providing essential amenities for RVs (though details on amperage are not specified) and tent campers.

  • Port-a-Potties for Restroom Facilities: Rather than traditional flush toilets, the campground relies on port-a-potties. Notably, one review describes the "port a potty is the nicest I have ever used," suggesting that despite the basic nature, efforts are made to keep them clean.

  • No Showers (or actively not maintained): Reviews explicitly state, "There are no showers," or that the owner "said she wasn't fixing" them. Campers should plan for no shower access during their stay.

  • Firewood for Sale: Firewood is available for purchase, though at a cost of "a buck per piece of wood," which may imply individual logs rather than bundles. This provides convenient access to campfire fuel.

  • Trash Management Expectations: Campers may be asked to "burn all our trash," with the owner stating they "couldn't afford garbage pickup." This implies a "pack it in, pack it out" or on-site burning policy for waste, which is crucial information for responsible disposal.

  • Direct Communication with Owner/Manager: The nature of the reviews suggests a very hands-on approach from the owner/manager ("Bev"), implying direct interaction for needs and rules. Campers need to call to reserve a spot.

Features / Highlights

Scenic Acres Camp Ground offers a few key features and highlights that distinguish it for campers seeking a particular type of outdoor experience, focusing on quietude and simplicity.

  • Quiet and Secluded Atmosphere: A consistent highlight is its reputation as a "nice quiet little campground" where you "can have a quiet time." Its location "in the middle of a wheat field" inherently contributes to a peaceful and secluded environment, far from typical campground noise.

  • Small, Intimate Setting: With "only 4 campsites," the campground offers a very personal and intimate camping experience. This ensures minimal crowds and a greater sense of privacy compared to larger, more populated campgrounds.

  • Basic Site Amenities: Each of the four campsites comes equipped with water, electric hookups, a picnic table, and a fire pit. These essentials provide a good balance for a primitive yet comfortable stay, especially for those who appreciate having direct power and water at their site.

  • "Nicest Port-a-Potty Ever Used": While there are no flush toilets or showers, the positive mention of the port-a-potty's cleanliness suggests a dedication to maintaining basic hygiene facilities well, which is a significant plus for primitive camping.

  • Economical Choice: The overall pricing structure is implied to be economical, making it a budget-friendly option for campers looking to save money while still enjoying the outdoors.

  • Owner-Managed Experience: The direct and involved presence of the owner ("Bev") means a highly personal, though perhaps idiosyncratic, camping experience. For some, this direct interaction and the hands-on management can be a highlight, fostering a unique connection to the place.

  • Star-Gazing Opportunities: The open field location, away from significant light pollution, likely provides excellent opportunities for stargazing on clear nights.

  • Views of Wheat Fields: The unique setting in a wheat field offers distinct "views" that are a departure from typical wooded campgrounds, providing a different kind of natural aesthetic.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Scenic Acres Camp Ground offers a unique and suitable camping experience for a specific segment of Minnesota locals, particularly those who embrace primitive camping and value a highly individualized, quiet retreat. Its prime suitability stems from several factors that resonate with a certain type of regional camper.

Firstly, its economical nature makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious Minnesotans. In an era where camping costs can add up, a small, quiet spot with essential hookups at a reasonable price is a significant draw. This allows more frequent, accessible escapes into nature without breaking the bank.

Secondly, the campground's small size and "middle of a wheat field" location provide an unparalleled level of quietude and seclusion. For locals living in more populated areas, this offers a genuine opportunity to disconnect from urban noise and truly enjoy the peace of rural Minnesota. While some may find the "windy" conditions challenging at times, for others, it's part of the raw, natural experience of being in an open landscape.

Thirdly, the direct, hands-on involvement of the owner ("Bev") creates a highly personal camping dynamic. While this may lead to unique experiences (like specific trash requests or direct instructions), for campers who appreciate straightforward communication and a non-commercial, personal touch, this can be a highlight. It fosters a sense of direct engagement with the property's management that is rare in larger, more corporate campgrounds.

Finally, being located near Winona means campers can enjoy the tranquility of the site while still having relatively easy access to the city's amenities and the wider natural attractions of the bluff country, such as hiking trails and the Mississippi River. For Minnesotans looking for a truly rustic, no-frills, and highly personal camping adventure, where peace and affordability are prioritized, Scenic Acres Camp Ground offers a distinct and memorable option right in their own beautiful state.
