Salmon River Campground

ID-75, Stanley, ID 83278, USA

4.0
Great little campground not very far from Stanley. You are right along the highway so it can be a little loud at times. The river is easily accessible most of the year and the bathrooms were clean. In the late season the river is low and can be a nice little place to dip your feet. Lots of trails nearby and if you need a little more privacy then Casino Creek Campground is just down the road. - C C

Location and Accessibility

Salmon River Campground is wonderfully situated along ID-75, right on the outskirts of Stanley, ID 83278, USA. Its proximity to Stanley is a significant advantage, making it "not very far from Stanley," which means easy access to the town's services, supplies, and dining options should you need them. The campground's location directly on ID-75 is a double-edged sword: while it provides excellent accessibility, users should be aware that "You are right along the highway so it can be a little loud at times." This is a trade-off for the convenience of being able to pull directly off the main road.

Despite the road noise, the easy access is a major plus for many campers, as it means less time navigating rough dirt roads and more time enjoying your surroundings. The campground is designed for easy entry and exit, accommodating various vehicle types, though specific site sizes may vary. For those seeking even more solitude, it's worth noting that "if you need a little more privacy then Casino Creek Campground is just down the road," offering an alternative for a quieter experience. However, Salmon River Campground's prime location right along the Salmon River is undoubtedly one of its most appealing features, with the river being "easily accessible most of the year."

Services Offered

  • Primitive Campsites:

Salmon River Campground offers a "great primitive camp site." While specific amenities like hookups are not mentioned, the term "primitive" typically implies basic facilities. However, a significant positive aspect highlighted by campers is that "the bathrooms were clean," which is a considerable convenience and a testament to good maintenance for a primitive site.

  • Riverside Access:

One of the standout services is direct and easy access to the Salmon River. This is a major draw for those interested in fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of the water. In the late season, "the river is low and can be a nice little place to dip your feet." During August, the river was observed to be "gently flowing and only a couple feet deep, perfect for an afternoon dip/ wade," even feeling "nice and safe" for a "3 year old." It is recommended to bring "water shoes" as "the rocks are smooth and slippery in the water."

  • Nearby Trail Access:

The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding natural landscape. There are "lots of trails nearby," providing ample opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and exploring the beautiful Idaho wilderness. This makes it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy combining camping with active recreation.

  • Proximity to Stanley:

While not a direct service of the campground itself, its close proximity to Stanley means campers have convenient access to town services, including gas, groceries, restaurants, and other supplies, making it easier to resupply or enjoy a meal out if desired.

Features / Highlights

  • Prime Riverside Location:

Being "right on the river" is arguably the biggest highlight of Salmon River Campground. This direct access allows for refreshing dips, wading, and the soothing sounds of flowing water, creating a truly immersive natural experience. The river's gentle flow in late summer makes it particularly inviting for families with young children.

  • Clean Facilities:

For a primitive campground, the cleanliness of the bathrooms is a significant advantage. This amenity enhances the comfort and overall positive experience for campers, allowing them to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing basic hygiene.

  • Family-Friendly Wading:

The gentle and shallow nature of the Salmon River during parts of the year makes it exceptionally safe and enjoyable for families, even those with young children. The ability to "dip your feet" or "wade" safely in the river is a huge bonus for a relaxed outdoor experience.

  • Access to Outdoor Activities:

With "lots of trails nearby," the campground is a hub for outdoor adventure. Hikers, nature walkers, and explorers will find plenty to do, making it an ideal base camp for discovering the natural beauty of the Stanley area.
